Global Manufacturing Our worldwide manufacturing facilities produce high-quality products and systems, using state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and advanced optimization tools to ensure consistent levels of quality and improve efficiency.

Customer satisfaction is improved through Six Sigma, a quality methodology designed to eliminate process variability, product defects and waste. Since 2001, our Six Sigma programs have produced $177 million in permanent savings worldwide. The company is also implementing Design for Six Sigma, which applies Six Sigma quality principles in product design and development programs.Nearly all of Tenneco’s world-class manufacturing facilities are ISO9000 certified.

Tenneco has embraced Lean manufacturing – “the least wasteway”which improves nearly every business metric. Our emissions control facility in Litchfield, Michigan,showcases how Lean is being implemented throughout the company. Since beginning with Lean in 2000,the facility has reduced inventory by 34 percent, improved quality by 86 percent (ppm) and improvedrevenue per employee by 101 percent.

We engineer In-line Sequenced and Just -In -Time delivery concepts that meet the varying needs of our customers.

We continue to generate savings through global supply chain management programs that identify the best suppliers worldwide, leverage our global spending and capture opportunities to source from lower-cost countries.

Design and Integrate Modules and Systems Increasingly, original equipment manufacturers are looking for fully engineered, pre-assembled parts and systems. These components improve logistics, offer faster vehicle assembly and help provide cost reductions. To meet this demand, we offer industry leading skills in designing and manufacturing ride control modules and full ride control systems. We also supply full exhaust systems – from fabricated manifolds to the tailpipe–with our cold- to hot-end engineering expertise.

Our automated laser-beam muffler welding process represents just one step in a continuous supply pipeline. The laser-weldedmuffler is then transferred to a JIT facility where we assemble and ship a full exhaust system every 12 minutes to our customer 500 feet away.

Perfecting product flow through operational excellence processes like Kanban, allows us to serve customers’ needs when andwhere they need it.

Original Equipment Emission ControlTenneco is one of the world’s leading suppliers of exhaust products and systems for original equipment manufacturers. We integrate exhaust components and supply our customers with full exhaust systems. Our products include:

Engineering and DesignOur technology development is driven by environmental regulations,trends and customer needs. These include increasingly stringent emissions and noise regulations, the drive for better fuel efficiency, new demand for diesel and other alternative fuel and hybrid vehicles,and greater demand for lightweight components.

With our leading emission control design and engineering capabilities,we are well positioned to help our customers meet all emissions regulations and address alternative powertrains. This includes diesel engines and cylinder deactivated engines, as well as the trendtoward hybrids and new generation powertrains such as fuel cells.

Tenneco elastomer and exhaust engineers collaborated to develop aunique exhaust isolator that cost effectively delivers outstandingnoise, vibration and harshness (NVH) performance.

Tenneco is a leader in sound attenuation. We work collaboratively with customers to identify risks and challenges early in the development

process. Through the use of predictive tools, we provide options to meet customer targets and ensuresystem optimization with our virtual design and development capabilities. The ability to design and testanalytically reduces the need for prototype vehicles.

Tenneco also uses proprietary software tools to simulate tailpipe noise to develop exhaust systems that generate specific engine sounds, increasingly important for vehicle brand differentiation.

Technology and ProductsTenneco offers all catalytic converter canning techniques and both hot- and cold-spinning manufacturing capabilities. Our converter canningcapabilities include thin-wall and ultra thin-wall substrate canning, tourniquet, calibrated Tubular Integrated Converter, clamshell and shoebox designs.

Our Semi-Active Muffler (SAM®) Valves provide constant exhaust gas flow adjustment, delivering an optimal balance between acoustics and engineperformance and standardization across different engines within the same platform.

Tenneco is at the forefront of technology develop-ment to meet the emissions control demands ofdiesel engines. We design and manufacture aftertreatment products and systems that reduce or eliminate diesel particulate emissions.

We produce fabricated manifolds with air gap technology. We also provide manifold coupled catalytic converters that feature thin-wall catalystsand electrically heated catalysts, resulting in fastercatalytic converter light-off.

Our manifold capabilities are showcased in the Tubular Manifolds with Close Coupled Catalysts, the most complex designs delivering optimum power with reduced emissions.

Tenneco also is establishing leadership in lightweight and ultra-lightweight exhaust systemtechnology.

Tenneco has developed several patented and patent-pending designs for exhaust isolators. Our new design, the “shear hub,”was launched on several 2007 OEM platforms.

Tenneco’s cost-effective tubular integrated converter is lighter weight andoffers more durability.

SAM® technology helps adapt standardized muffler designs for a wide variety of applications.

Tenneco introduced one of the first diesel particulate filters, which currentlyequips 34 passenger car and light truck models.

Original Equipment Ride Control

CES is a semi-active suspension system that continu-ously adjusts damping levels according to road anddriving conditions. At the heart of the CES is an advanced valve system, developed with Öhlins Racing.The valves – integrated with an electronic controllerand chassis sensors – work together to deliver the most advanced damping characteristics.

Our Acceleration Sensitive Damping (ASD) shock absorber solves the challenge of delivering both a soft, comfortable ride and firm vehicle handling. The award-winning ASDtechnology is a mechanical valve system that instantaneously changes damping force to adjust vehicle ride to bumps and changes in the road surface.

Frequency Dependent Damping is a next generationshock absorber. It is environmentally friendly – uses no oil – and minimizes the compromise between rideand handling. A frequency dependent damping shockabsorber can be mounted in any position and has amore consistent damping performance over a widerange of temperatures.

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)Tenneco’s fully-integrated emission control system,the ELIM-NOxTM SCR System, is designed to reduceNOx emissions by 70 to 90 percent using SCR technology. The injector system provides rapid, uniform dispersion of urea without using steam or compressed air, reducing overall system lifecycle cost. The “self-learn”monitoring device significantly reduces vehicle development time and costs through unique sensors.

Diesel Particulate Filter The Tenneco diesel particulate filter system technology has been successfullyadapted to the commercial vehicle and specialty markets. These highly effective filters are temperature resistant and eliminate more than 95 percent of particulate matter from diesel emissions.

Adjustable Monotube ShockTenneco’s Adjustable Monotube Shock allows a vehicle’s ride to be tuned for road and load conditions. The singletube design with multiple adjustment positions providesfaster damping response andimproves vehicle noise, vibration and harshness.

Monroe®Magnum shocks are designed for commercial vehicles weighing from 3.5 tons to 41 tons, and for axles up to 12 tons. The productrange has been expanded to include cabindampers, cabin air springs and seat dampers.
