    TenCate GeoDetect Monitoring and warning solution

    TenCate GeoDetect is the first sensor enabled geotextile on the market to provide soil reinforcement,

    structural health monitoring and an early warning system into one package. Our intelligent

    geotextile is the first system designed specifically for geotechnical applications and offers a technical

    solution for monitoring geo-structures for changes in strain, temperature or the combination of the

    two. TenCate GeoDetect is the only solution available on the market able to measure low strain in asoil structure. The TenCate GeoDetect System incorporates a geocomposite fabric, fiber optics,

    instrumentation equipment and software to provide a innovative solution for the multi-functional

    requirements of a geotechnical application, e.g. protection of the optical fiber, anchoring interface with

    the soil, in-plane drainage capability and reinforcement in addition to data acquisition.

    Applications

    The TenCate GeoDetect solution is ideal for:

    Walls

    Geosynthetics are more and more used to reinforce earth-walls, because they are cheaper and easier toinstall than other systems.

    When it is crucial to follow deformation level of the earth structure (bridge abutment for example),monitoring gives an additional safety. It is also valuable to measure the displacements at the interface

    between rigid and soft structures. Structural Health monitoring is important when the earthwork is

    localized close to sensitive areas or when the site materials are of poor quality.

    Embankments on piles

    Embankments over piles are used more and more. Geotextiles for reinforcement improve the load

    Roads/Rails

    Existing right-of-ways/easements and environmental concerns often force new rail and highwayconstruction over geotechnically-challenging areas, including karst topography, abandoned mines,

    soft ground, and existing landslides.

    Slopes

    The increasing use of steeper and higher slopes in more adverse topography by property developers

    that want to maximize surface area for new building construction is creating an embedded liability forowners and engineers.

    Levees

    Levees have random and high hydraulic stresses. Early detection and warning during a flood event ofany sign of erosion or instability increases the people security and prevents the failure of these works.

    Dams and dikes

    Dams must be supported by competent foundations and are routinely stressed by permanent or cyclic

    hydraulic forces. Early detection of soil erosion and instability is a challenge for the safety of hydraulic

    works.

    Embankments on cavities

    Embankments over soft soils, or cavities, or built with poor soils have challenging and specific designs.

    Early warning systems are essential to monitor the changes of these earthworks and to react when

    early suspects signs are detected deeply into the soil.

    Canals, Basins and reservoirs

    Water resource management et pollution control due to the storage of hazardous products require high

    performance mineral and geomembrane lining systems. Leakage and damage detection and

    localization systems are essential control, reception and management tools.

    Landfills

    The TenCate GeoDetect system has the potential to address several challenges specific to landfill

    applications: movement detection of top soil layer; landfill expansion for higher containment capacitywith steeper slope reinforcement; assessment of the mechanical properties of waste materials, and

    monitoring temperature variations in a leak detection use.

    The TenCate GeoDetect geotextile enabled sensor comes in three product configurations:

    1. TenCate GeoDetect is a customizable solution that is created to meet the unique requirements ofeach individual project. Fiber Bragg gratings (FBG), Stimulated Brillouin Scattering and Raman

    Scattering are all proven fiber optic technologies that can be built into TenCate GeoDetect. These

    technologies measure strain, strain & temperature or temperature only changes in soil structures.

    Strain as low as 0.02% can be measured with a spatial resolution of 1 m. With the proper software,changes in temperature can be monitored at 0.1C with a spatial resolution of 1 m.o

    2. TenCate GeoDetect S uses Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) technology to measure strain and/or

    temperature in soil structures. Compact and easy to install, TenCate GeoDetect S is 1 meter wide by

    10 meters long. Two FBG optical fibers are embedded onto each TenCate GeoDetect S strip with 11

    FBG sensors strategically inserted onto the two special optical fibers approximately 1 meters apart. Strain measurements as low as 0.02% can be obtained with a spatial resolution of 0.5m. Changes in

    temperature can also be monitored at 0.1C.

    3. TenCate GeoDetect S-BR is a solution that uses Stimulated Brillouin and Raman Scattering

    technology in single mode and multimode fibers to measure strain as low as 0.02% and/or changes in

    temperature of 0.1C with spatial resolutions of 1 m at distances up to 20 km with suitable

    instrumentation. The TenCate GeoDetect S-BR systemis designed for projects such as oil pipelines,

    levees, roads and rails. The standard version is a strip 0.76 m wide and 600 m long. Customisedversions are possible.
