He gained the attention of the audience by taking them back to his childhood and talking about his love for sci-fi books and exploring the natural world. The use of occasional humor kept the audience interested throughout the speech.

The use of storytelling from Nancy Duarte was clear. He wasn’t just listing what he accomplished but also how and why he did. The inspiration behind all of his projects was told through various stories as well.

WHAT I LEARNED

I learned that having a continuous flow in the presentation is key. This keeps the audience focused on what you’re saying.

Being prepared and knowledgeable as well as just being generally comfortable helps prevent pausing and filler.

COMPARISONS

Both men had a common underlying message with the message being; do whatever pleases you for a career. They both thought very highly of using imagination and emphasized not to lose it throughout life.

DIFFERENCES

Sir Ken Robinson’s presentations had a more informative tone while James Cameron’s had more of a inspirational feeling. Also James Cameron’s content was more biographical with storytelling while Mr. Robinson’s was more opinionated mixed with factual examples.

ADVICE

Always have a continuing flow. Know your material. Try to avoid pausing, stumbling through phrases, forgetting and thinking of what you’re going to say. Being articulate is important but in order to be articulate you must first be prepared.
