Use:For the selection ofinterior non-axiallyloaded standard gagestuds, interactingwith gypsum wall-board, subjected touniform lateral load.Select a stud, interms of interior lat-eral load (PSF), spac-ing (Inches O.C.) and Deflection Limit (L/240 & 120), whichprovides an allowable height, equal to or greater than the required.

Notes:1. Tables are reprinted, with permission, from the Annual Book

of ASTM Standards, copyright American Society for Testingand Materials.

2. Limiting heights are based on the results of lateral load testsinvolving the use of studs acting compositely with gypsumwallboard, installed full height to each side of the wall. Theuse of these tables is limited to the selection of uniformlyloaded, simply supported studs not subjected to axial load.

Applicationsinvolving multi-ple spans, can-tilevers, concen-trated loads,etc., should beinvestigated sep-arately.

3. Where studs arerigidly braced ator below maxi-mum height (bysuspended ceil-ing or separate bracing), the overall partition height may beincreased 50 percent.

4. Special height limitations or added bracing may be required forframing used for application of water resistant gypsum backingboard to receive ceramic tile. Consult the board manufacturer'srecommendations for special installation details.

5. 1-5/8" studs with a single layer of gypsum board are recom-mended for braced chase walls and closets only.

Use:For the selection of interior non-axially loaded studs subjected touniform lateral load. Select a stud, in terms of interior lateral load(PSF), spacing (Inches O.C.) and Deflection Limit (L/360, 240 &120), which provides an allowable height, equal to or greater thanthe required.

Notes:1. The use of these tables is limited to the selection of uniformly

loaded, simply supported studs not subjected to axial load.Applications involving multiple spans, cantilevers, concentratedloads, etc., should be investigated separately.

2. Limiting heights assume the stud is braced against minor axis(y-y) rotation by the attachment of minimum 1/2" thicknessgypsum wallboard or sheathing products of equivalentstrength, applied full height to each side of the wall. In applications where the wall is not sheathed full height, eachside, or sheathed on one side only, continuous bridging spacedat intervals not to exceed 5 feet on center, shall be installed.Reductions in allowable bending capacities must be investigatedseparately.

3. Deflections were calculated based on the properties of the studalone (i.e. without consideration of the composite contributionfrom the attachment of gypsum wallboard or sheathing.

4. The web to thickness ratio exceeds 200. Bearing stiffeners arerequired at support locations.
