The use of magnetic holding assemblies is becoming widespread in the precast concrete industry, and for good reason. Using magnets to locate side rails, windows and other block-outs, offers precasters a flexible and quick alternative to bolt down systems. Magnets eliminate the need to drill and then fill holes to relocate side rails, pro- tecting your forms from damage. Magnets can easily hold weld plates or headers in place. When handling magnets, remember that they are attracted to each other.

It is very easy for magnets to acci-dentally stick to one another if they are close by. The key is to keep themseparated by a wide distance or putsome non-magnetic material betweenthem, such as plastic, cardboard orwood.

When carrying 2 magnets at the same time, keep them far apart, or put non-magnetic material between them.

Individual magnets should be carriedwrapped in corrugated cardboard, plywood or similar material. Anotheroption is carry magnets on a heavygauge steel plate or other surface thatthe magnet adheres to.

Never get fingers or feet between two activated magnets. Wear heavy safety gloves when working with magnets.

SAF-T-MAG ON/OFF MAGNETSOne way to eliminate magnet safetyissues is to use Saf-T-Mag ON/OFF magnets. These magnets are designedto be completely safe when in the “OFF”position. When in the “OFF” position,they exert no magnetic force — period.They do not stick to other magnets, nordo they stick to steel when they areturned “OFF”. When they are “ON”,these magnets are as strong as any other magnet on the market, and, will notturn on unless they are placed flat againstthe steel form. The Saf-T-Mag makesworking with magnets easier and safer.

•SAFETY AND HANDLING TIPSAlways keep in mind that magnets can be very powerful.

For instance, a small 5" loaf magnethas over 1,000 pounds of adhesionforce. A large button magnet has over 4,000 pounds of adhesion force.Magnets must be respected and han-dled carefully, especially near steel orother magnets.

SHIMMING MAGNETIC RAILSIf a magnet in a side rail is too high andthere is a space between the magnet andthe surface, you will need to shim themagnet in the rail to lower it.

Loosen the bolt holding the magnet in therail and place a shim between the boltand the top of the magnet to lower it. It isbest to use non-magnetic materials suchas brass or aluminum for shims, however,steel shims such as pieces of bandingstraps can be used.

HOW TO ENGAGE AND DISENGAGE MAGNETSMake sure the mounting surface and the magnet are clean for good adhesion.Debris or dirt between the magnet andthe mounting surface can produce an air gap and reduces the magnetic adhesion.

Make sure the surface is flat so that complete contact is made between themagnet and the surface.

An air gap reduces the holding capacityof a magnet. The larger the air gap between a magnet and an attractive surface, the less force is exerted. Themagnet must lay flush against the surface.

Magnets adhere better to thicker steelsurfaces. A 3/8" thick plate on a castingtable will provide a better adhesion sur-face than 1/4" plate.

Place or align the rails or block-out in the exact location desired. Make surethe surface is flat with no air gaps forgood adhesion.

1. After the rail is properly positioned, depress the button on the button magnet to engage the magnet.

2. Slide the disengagement tool under the button magnet and lift to disengage.

The loaf magnet with outrigger system allows almostany existing rail to be retrofit with a magnet. Disengageby prying up the projecting pin with a common clawhammer or pry tool.

1. SAF-T-MAG ON/OFF MAGNETSUsing a wrench, turn the hex bolt 90degrees to the on position to engage theSaf-T-Mag. The Saf-T-Mag will not turnon unless it is placed on a steel surface.To disengage the magnet, turn the hexbolt in the opposite direction 90 degreesto the off position.

3. LOAF MAGNETS Set one end of the loaf magnet on themounting surface, making sure yourhands, fingers, toes, etc. are not covering the open side of the magnet.Slowly lower the magnet toward themounting surface, making sure nothingcomes between the magnet and thesteel. As the magnet adhesion increases,release the magnet, allowing the magnetto set its own position. To disengage, pry up on the projecting pin with a common claw hammer or a pry tool.

2. BUTTON MAGNETSDepress the button to engage the magnet. A specially designed disengage-ment tool can be used to disengage themagnet. Simply slide the tool under the button and lift.

CLEANING AND STORING MAGNETSAll magnets should be cleaned of any dirtor debris before they are stored. If mag-nets are especially soiled, use a stiff wirebrush to clean off heavy debris. Then,lightly oil the magnets to prevent rust.

Once cleaned, Saf-T-Mag ON/OFFMagnets can be easily stored while in the“OFF” position. For more secure storage,they can be attached to a heavy gaugesteel plate by turning them to the “ON”position. The ON/OFF Saf-T-Mag will notturn on unless it is on a flat steel surface.

To store all other types of magnets, placethe magnets on a piece of heavy gaugemetal. This assures that the magnet ismagnetized to the metal and won’tattract debris and other metal. The heav-ier the gauge of the steel, the better. This is called “keepering the magnet.”The magnetic force is directed to whereyou want it, so that the magnet is notattracting what you don’t want it to.Another option is to use heavy or corru-gated cardboard or plywood between themagnets.

Magnetic Chamfer and Reveal Strips areshipped from Hamilton Form in PVCtubes. We highly recommend that yousave the tubes and use them for storageof the magnetic chamfer and revealstrips. This will keep them clean and protected while not in use.

Magnets and magnetic rails are built to last for decades. Take care of your investment by properly main-taining and storing your magnets.
