‘Open-Heart Surgery’ is performed by opening the chest wall to operateon the heart.

‘ Open

’   refers to the chest, not the heart.

Open-Heart Surgery is used to bypass blocked arteries in the heart, repair orreplace heart valves, treat atrial fibrillation, and do heart transplants

The bypass machine takes over the pumping action of the heart

 Medical evaluation before surgery 

Kind of heart problem, symptoms ,duration of symptoms

History and past treatment

Family history of heart problems

Recovery 

Patient may spend few days in theIntensive Care Unit (ICU)

Patients will be moved to another part of the hospital from ICU before they gohome.

 After-Effects

 After-effects of heart surgery are normal.

Common after-effects are:

muscle pain

chest pain

swelling

loss of appetite

problems sleeping

constipation

mood swings depression

Full recovery may take 6 to 12 weeks ormore

General Risks

Bleeding

Infection and Fever

Swelling or other signs of inflammation

Reaction to the medicine

 Arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats)

Memory loss

Damage to tissues in the heart, kidneys,and lungs

High Risks

•  Are older than 70

•Have had previous heart surgeries

•Have diseases or conditions such as•high blood pressure•diabetes•kidney disease•lung disease• peripheral arterial disease

• Mortality (Heart surgery is morelikely to be life threatening in peoplewith pre-existing conditions.)

Heart surgery has risks, even though its results often are excellent
