Using a WikiThere are various reasons for setting up a class wiki. They make a quick and easy

way to create a website and share resources. Ultimately, wikis are a useful tool forstudent collaboration.

Setup your own personal wiki without advertizing athttp://www.wikispaces.com/content/for/teachers

Make sure to check the box that this will be used for K-12 education. Check out someexamples of wikis used for LOTE education:

•  Spanish

o  http://kolterelementary.wikispaces.com/Myers

o  http://kolterelementary.wikispaces.com/Kinson

o  http://dhsespanol.wikispaces.com/home

o  http://sraburden.wikispaces.com/home

•  French

o  http://kolterelementary.wikispaces.com/French

o  https://readingresources4frenchteachers.wikispaces.com/

o  http://lemondefrancophone10.wikispaces.com/

o  http://ah-bon-french.wikispaces.com/

•  Chinese

o  http://kolterelementary.wikispaces.com/yu

o  http://chenkolter.wikispaces.com/

o  http://chineselanguagelearninglinks.wikispaces.com/

•  Japanese

o  http://kolterelementary.wikispaces.com/Japanese

o  http://haadobenkyoo-fuu.wikispaces.com/

o  https://imatj.wikispaces.com/

o  http://bellinisensei.blogspot.com/ (a blog but still good)

If you can use a word processor you can have a wiki. Just set up your wiki, click

edit, and start typing…

Comic StripsMake Belief Comix - http://www.makebeliefscomix.com/Comix/

It’s amazingly easy andstudents don’t have to have

an account. In order tograde these, students email

them to an email created

just for the [email protected] .

Students could also sharetheir work with parents or

friends.

In order to create theappropriate diacritical

marks, you can use the alt

codes or if you are using alaptop with Asian languages

installed and the Alt keys donot function, then there are

some great sites for copying and pasting just the characters you need.•  Create, copy, and then paste your special Spanish characters from here -

http://spanish.typeit.org/

•  Create, copy, and then paste your special French characters from here -http://french.typeit.org/

Smart NotebookSmart Notebook is the interactive software that comeswith a Smartboard. Here is an article from Ed Leadership

by Marzano about the research done concerning Teachingwith Interactive Whiteboards

http://www.ascd.org/publications/educational-leadership/nov09/vol67/num03/Teaching-with-Interactive-

Whiteboards.aspx. It is a powerful tool. There is a simplelife cycle of the butterfly we use with K-1 students in Spanish and French available

at the Kolter Spanish and French wikis -http://kolterelementary.wikispaces.com/Myers or

http://kolterelementary.wikispaces.com/French.

There are many resources already created for LOTE teachers. A quick search canbe done at http://exchange.smarttech.com.

•  Browse under Modern Foreign Languages •  Put your language in the search box and leave the other options as they are

•  Look at the Notebook files that are available.A quick search under Spanish using the method above returned 111 SmartNotebook lessons from beginning elementary Spanish to AP Spanish. French

returned 55 lessons, Chinese returned 4, and Japanese returned 13.

Promethian Flipcharts and Powerpoint lessons can be imported into Smart. Use theadvanced search feature in Promethian Planet

http://www.prometheanplanet.com/en/resources/ to find lessons for yourlanguage.

Another excellent way to teach with a Smartboard is to use an interactive website

such as Digital Dialects http://www.digitaldialects.com/. These are flash-basedwebsites that work nicely with an Interactive Whiteboard. The Tarheel readerhttp://tarheelreader.org/ has interactive ebooks in a number of languages.
