In this session, we will focus on four tools for teaching languages other thanEnglish:

1. What is the curriculum related purpose of the activity? The

outcome or assessment should be aligned to your lesson objectivesand standards.

2. Does the Internet enhance the activity? If the answer is no,find a more appropriate place to integrate the web.

3.

How w ill students use the online resources? Once studentslocate information, they should be asked to apply, analyze,

synthesize, evaluate, or create. The activity should require them tomove to higher levels of Bloom's Taxonomy.

4. Do students have necessary informationanalysis/ information synthesis skills or am I including these

in instruction? The project should not become simply an exercisein locating information. Students must have the necessary

background knowledge and pre-requisite skills to complete higherlevel tasks or these must be included in instruction prior to theweb-based learning activity.

5. Do I have the necessary time and support for the activity? Double your original time estimate and always have access to

technical support to resolve problems efficiently.




Using a WikiThere are various reasons for setting up a class wiki. They make a quick and easy

way to create a website and share resources. Ultimately, wikis are a useful tool forstudent collaboration.

It’s amazingly easy andstudents don’t have to have

an account. In order tograde these, students email

Students could also sharetheir work with parents or

friends.

In order to create theappropriate diacritical

marks, you can use the alt

codes or if you are using alaptop with Asian languages

installed and the Alt keys donot function, then there are

Smart NotebookSmart Notebook is the interactive software that comeswith a Smartboard. Here is an article from Ed Leadership

by Marzano about the research done concerning Teachingwith Interactive Whiteboards

Whiteboards.aspx. It is a powerful tool. There is a simplelife cycle of the butterfly we use with K-1 students in Spanish and French available

There are many resources already created for LOTE teachers. A quick search canbe done at http://exchange.smarttech.com.

• Browse under Modern Foreign Languages • Put your language in the search box and leave the other options as they are

• Look at the Notebook files that are available.A quick search under Spanish using the method above returned 111 SmartNotebook lessons from beginning elementary Spanish to AP Spanish. French

returned 55 lessons, Chinese returned 4, and Japanese returned 13.

Promethian Flipcharts and Powerpoint lessons can be imported into Smart. Use theadvanced search feature in Promethian Planet

Another excellent way to teach with a Smartboard is to use an interactive website

such as Digital Dialects http://www.digitaldialects.com/. These are flash-basedwebsites that work nicely with an Interactive Whiteboard. The Tarheel readerhttp://tarheelreader.org/ has interactive ebooks in a number of languages.

Animation and Oral CommunicationBlabberize - http://blabberize.com

Here are some basic instructions for using Blabberize:

1. Find an image to use. One way todo this is to use Creative

Common’s licensed photos fromFlickr.

they are facing forward. Downloadthis image to your computer.

Go to www.blabberize.com andclick on MAKE. Click on BROWSE tolocate the picture you saved in

your computer.3. Next, you can select just the part

of the photo you want to use. By dragging thepink handles.

4. Now you position the mouth by dragging thecircle over where you want it to be.

5. To resize or reshape the mouth click and dragthe blue and green dots.

6. When you are done click on the blue arrow andyou can record via the microphone on your

computer. You can also upload a pre-recorded30 second mp3 file if you like.

7. Follow the wizard to record your sound andwhen it is uploaded, preview it and save it. Tore-record, click on the white circle “Pick a

Sound”.8. To save it students will need to log into the class

account or they can create their own accounts if they are over 13.

Now click on Share It. Put in the teacher’s class email address and youare done.
