    1. Orientation (analysis): determine big/overall picture by looking for essential facts about participants, their roles, their relationship, the location, the setting, the kind of event, the emotional tone.

    2. Identification: identification of familiar elements, such as names of people, places, cognates, adjectives.3. Main idea (synthesis): determine major ideas4. Specific details: determine essential details5. Exact replication: word for word6. Intention (of speaker, writer)
