I decided to spend my time visiting and interacting with children at Space Coast’s Early Intervention Center on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. I was very excited to spend time outdoors with the young children doing fun physical activities. I planned to do physical activities during the children's outside time because the teachers use it as free time and the special needs children seem to enjoy outside time more than inside time. I am hoping to get these children active and participating in physical activities while outside.

Engagement Activities During my visits on Monday and Wednesday

afternoons at Space Coast Early Intervention Center I spent time with the young students playing physical activities outside. Each day I had the students engage in a different physical activity. I had the students ride bicycles, play baseball, swing on the swings, and play in the sandbox. On a few of my visits I spent time with the 2 year old children; which I helped learn how to swing on the swings. I also spent time with the 3 to 5 year olds, which I had ride bicycles and play in the sandbox. Lastly I had the 5 to 8 year old children play baseball.

Participant Demographics During my service hours at Space Coast Early

Intervention Center I spent time with three different classes of students. I spent time with six 2 year old children, nine 3 to 5 year old children, and eleven 6 to 9 year old children. I mainly spent time having the special needs children participate in the physical activities. Within my time at the center with the three classes I spent most of my time with a few of the down syndrome children and a couple of the young handicapped children. All of the children that I spent my time with where of white ethnic backgrounds.

My Reflection This experience immensely affected my views of

working with and teaching students with special needs. I really enjoyed the opportunity to see these children interact with other children and adults. The biggest impact this experience brought me was discovering how young children with down syndrome interact with others and their capacity to learn. I was amazed at how loving and bright these young children were. Even thought there were many times when it was apparent these children didn’t understand the instructions I was giving them. One of the little girls also cursed out loud occasionally. I found it very difficult and time consuming to get a few of them to follow directions.

After working with these children I am well aware of the patients needed to work with and teach students with special needs. I also realize that these students are amazing individuals who need the same if not more love and attention from us, their educators. I feel that I now have a better understanding of these students which will help me adjust my teaching strategies/approaches when working with students with special needs. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to spend time with the wonderful children at the Space Coast Early Intervention Center.
