Uncle Sam The term “Uncle Sam” is well known as a nickname for the United States
government. It is also aligned with Samuel Wilson, a meat packer during the War of 1812 who lived in Troy, New York. Wilson’s nickname at the time was “Uncle Sam” and many think this may have been the inspiration that led to the symbol that today symbolizes the United States. Although most historians aren’t certain on the origin of this symbol, it’s believed it’s a result of Samuel Wilson. Traditionally, “Uncle Sam’s” appears with a white goatee and starspangled outfit. It is agreed that the figure of Uncle Sam is an invention of artists and political cartoonists perspectives.

National Peanut Day September 13 th marks National Peanut Day. The origin of the peanut remains
a mystery as no fossil remains can prove its beginning. However, it is thought that the peanut may have originated from Brazil or Peru. By the time the Spanish explorers began their exploration of the New Word, peanuts were cultivated as far North as Mexico. The peanut returned to Spain and continues to be grown there today. Eventually, the peanut crop spread to Asia and Africa and ultimately North America. Equipment developed in the early 1900’s led to the abilities to plant, cultivate, pick, shell, and clean the peanut kernels. Researcher George Washington Carver explored the peanut at the Tuskeegee Institute where he discoved more than 300 uses of the peanut!

Johnny Appleseed
John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed, was born on September 26,1774 near Leominster, Massachusetts. John Chapman evolved into a nursery person who planted apple trees all over western parts of New York and Pennsylvania. Orchards that exist in those areas today are linked to the origin of his apple trees. Johnny Appleseed as he became known, simply explored new territories, and planted apple seeds. He worked and lived alone for many months at a time, with only Native Americans and animals for companionship. Chapman was a small man who was well known for his kind and gentle nature. It’s hard to estimate the number of apple trees planted, yet his legacy lives on yet today.
