Product Description Juniper Networks® TCX1000 Programmable ROADM is a colorless, directionless, reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) that scales up to 25.6 Tbps per line. TCX1000 Programmable ROADM

The TCX1000 Programmable ROADM integrates the following functions into a compact 1 U chassis:

• Route and select wavelength selective switch (WSS) with 20 node-side universal ports

• Integrated high-power variable gain erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) line amplification (booster and pre-amp)

• Integrated spectral and total power monitoring

• Integrated Ethernet optical supervisory channel (OSC)

• Field-replaceable power supplies and cooling units

The 20 node-side ports serve different functions, based on application:

• Directly add or drop channels onto the network, effectively providing single direction, colorless mux-demux ports

• Connect to external mux-demux common ports to effectively multiply the number of ROADM ports for one of the following uses:

– Single-direction fixed grid mux-demux

– Single-direction colorless mux-demux

– Multidirection colorless mux-demux

• Connect to other ROADM degrees to form up to 20 multidegree switching nodes.

By enabling these connection types, the TCX1000 becomes a highly flexible device that supports a wide range of system applications driven by different use cases, including a simple, one-degree terminal with a fixed mux-demux; a one-degree terminal with up to 128 channels of colorless mux-demux; and a 20-degree switching node.

Equipping the TCX1000 Programmable ROADM with 20 universal node-side ports provides the flexibility to support various port combinations used for channel access (single or multiplex) and degree switching. TCX1000 Programmable ROADM ports are not fixed to any particular application; they are fully configurable via software, allowing users to, for example, configure a 4-degree node with four ROADMs. In this configuration, three ports on each TCX1000 are connected to other TCX1000 Programmable ROADM modules, leaving 17 ports available for channel and/or multiplexing. Initial deployments can start out using ports for direct channel connections and, as needs grow, connect the ports to multiplexers to expand capacity.

The TCX1000 Programmable ROADM integrates all EDFA line amplification, including switched gain EDFA where required, to provide sufficient dynamic range. It is optimized for coherent network configurations.

TCX1000 Multiplexing and AmplificationThe TCX1000 uses multiplexing in a wide array of flexible network configurations. If ports are configured as multiplex rather than degree ports, the input may be a single channel or a multiplex of channels.

Single channels can come directly from transponders, native Juniper wavelengths, or alien wavelengths, while multiplexes can come from other Juniper equipment or a third-party multiplex source. As such, each port on the TCX1000 has the ability to discover or confirm available channels and their power levels, providing a clear and monitored demarcation onto the optical transmission equipment.

The TCX1000 Programmable ROADM is also capable of supporting numerous multiplexing methods connected to several ports. For example, a user could start with a few direct-connect channels and, as traffic levels increase, an external multiplexer such as a TCX1000 2-degree 8-channel mux-demux can be added to a free port. This allows network operators to start with a modest configuration and grow the ROADM node capacity over time while maintaining existing services.

The TCX1000 also supports the Juniper Networks BTI7800 96-Channel Fixed Multiplexer, a 2 U, 50 GHz single-direction multiplexing solution that features low loss rates, high density, and low costs per channel. The 50 GHz channel spacing is capable of supporting optical channels up to approximately

34 GBaud, making it suitable for 100 Gbps and 200 Gbps transmissions while providing a simple solution for users with modest network requirements. The 96 channels are accessed via a single TCX1000 Programmable ROADM port, ensuring that the maximum number of universal ports is available for use as degree or colorless ports later.

Colorless multiplexing: The TCX1000 provides two solutions for colorless and flexible grid multiplexing in the form of a transponder-direct connection to the ROADM or an 8-way passive multiplexer.

The direct connect provides a simple way to offer up to 20 colorless connections. The transponder is directly connected to a TCX1000 Programmable ROADM port and the channel is provisioned without requiring any additional external multiplexer.

The TCX1000 2-Degree, 8-Channel Multiplexer is a passive splitter that acts as a simple port multiplier. One of the multiplexer’s two common (line) ports is connected to one of the TCX1000 Programmable ROADM ports allowing up to eight more transponders to be connected to the TCX1000 Programmable ROADM while maintaining spectrally programmable (colorless) operation. Connecting 12 multiplexers, for instance, would allow a single TCX1000 Programmable ROADM to support 96 transponder connections while leaving eight ROADM ports free for a 9-degree ROADM configuration; attaching 16 multiplexers would provide 128 transponder connections, leaving four ports available to support a 5-degree ROADM configuration.

Inline amplifier: Inline amplification provides a low-cost, low-noise, high-density amplification solution for sites that do not require access to traffic on the line. The TCX1000 Inline Amplifier (ILA) provides gain-flattened amplification, with the ability to tilt the spectrum for coarse spectrum equalization. The ILA embeds an OSC solution that provides a 100 Mbps Ethernet channel on a 1511 nm carrier; this is compatible

with the TCX1000 Programmable ROADM optical supervisory channel, which provides the ability to access ILA nodes remotely using in-band management—required for ILA sites where DCN access may be limited.

When coupled with multiple multiplexing strategies and the extended reach enabled by the ILA, the TCX1000 Programmable ROADM enables operators to address multiple use cases, including point-to-point coherent access, metro and long haul DCI, meshed coherent DCI, and metro regional and coherent core interconnect.

SoftwareThe TCX Series products, including all elements of the Juniper Programmable Photonic Layer open line system, are managed by proNX Optical Director, a microservices-based optical network management and control platform that supports the following features:

• Disaggregated management and control planes

• End-to-end service activation and monitoring

• Interoperability at the transponder level as well as alien wavelength level

• Standards-based Network Configuration Protocol (NETCONF) and telemetry interfaces

Open APIs allow customers to deploy their own network applications, helping them build a multilayer optimized converged packet optical network across dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) links on Juniper Networks PTX Series Packet Transport Routers, MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers, QFX Series Switches, and BTI Series Packet Optical Platforms.

The TCX Series delivers a software-managed and disaggregated optical control plane in conjunction with optical hardware to build next-generation transport networks, giving operators the flexibility to deploy DWDM transponders that can be integrated into Juniper routers, separated into standalone solutions, or carried as alien wavelengths.
