MontageDescription: An inspirational montage demonstrating photoshop technique and creativity using multiple pictures

and typography.

Date:May 31, 2014

Course/Instructor:COMM150

Cory Kerr

Objectives:To learn how to use basic Adobe Photoshop concepts

Learn how to blend multiple images without harsh edges

Implement rules of typography

Process:I first went through some of my personal photographs to find colors that had similar colors in order to

have a color scheme. I used three photographs for this design. I used the clouds as my main picture,

and then placed a mask on the photo of the girl. Using a soft-edged black paint brush on 100%

opacity, I painted away the background and kept just the girl’s figure and enlarged her. I then lowered

my opacity and blended her in with the clouds. Next, I placed the photo of the boat in the ocean over

the whole canvas and also put a mask on the photo. On a low opacity, I once again painted over it to

make it blend with the clouds. For my text, I chose simple typefaces, masked the quote, and used a low

opacity black paint brush to blend the text with the whole design.

BrochureDescription: A two sided folding brochure.

Date:July 13, 2014

Course/Instructor:COMM150

Cory Kerr

Objectives:Set up a two-page document using proper alignment

 Wrap text around an image

Learn how to use paragraph stills in InDesign

Process:I began my project on Adobe InDesign. I set up guides in order to identify where my fold was going tobe and so that I could see where I would align graphics, titles, and text boxes.

I decided to base my project based on a bakery business. I chose pictures that focused around baked

goods and sweets. I came up with a simple title and developed my logo on Adobe Illustrator. Before

implementing any text or pictures, I used shapes to define where I would put my body copy, titles, and

pictures. Once I had developed all of those pieces, I placed them into their designated areas in my

design.

For the image of the cupcake, I used the polygon lasso tool in Adobe Photoshop to remove the

background of the image. I then used the paint brush to further trim down and perfect the outline of

the cupcake.

I created the logo in Illustrator using the text, pen, and shape tools. For the backgrounds of the entire

brochure, I used photos that I took of the front, back, and inside of my friend’s oven.

Objectives:Utilize photography skills to make a simplistic add

Implement photographs into Adobe InDesign

Programs/Tools Used Adobe InDesign

 Adobe Photoshop

Canon Rebel T3i

Process: I first picked my complementary color scheme using the FOCUS textbook color wheel example. I took

the picture using a Cannon T3i Rebel. I decided to use manual focus in order to get the single grain

as the focal point. I then used Photoshop to brighten the picture, blur the background a little, and to

create a brighter blue for the sky. I mainly used the sharpen, saturation, and contrast tools. Using the

shape tools, I developed the two squares to demonstrate my color palette, which is a complementary

blue and orange. I selected fonts that were both interesting but simple in order to be captivating andeasy to read.

Business CardDescription:Matching business cards and letterhead for a company that makes custom cubicles.

Date:June 15, 2014

Course/Instructor:COMM150

Cory Kerr

Objectives:Learn the basic tools of Adobe Illustrator

Use color schemes to create attractive and pleasing cards

Process: For this project, I created my business card on Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign. I started with

my letterhead on Illustrator. I created a small logo that appeared as two C’s, but also the shape of a

cubicle. I made the square using the shape maker tool, and used the pen tool to create the “cubicle.”

I then used the shape maker tool to develop small squares, vanished the fill and slightly enlarged the

stroke, and copied the square in order to keep all of the squares aligned. I then switched the design

into InDesign added my text and the two lines below “Custom Cubicles.” I created my business card in

InDesign. I first made the large graphic using the rectangle shape tool and used the pen tool for the

lines for the “CC.” I enlarged the stroke to make the c’s bigger. Then I created the information side. I

started by implementing two shapes, the logo and then a blue box. I then added

my text and adjusted my alignment.

LogosDescription:The purpose of this project is to learn how to use Adobe Illustrator to create unique and creative

logos.

Date:June 8, 2014

Course/Instructor:COMM150

Cory Kerr

Objective:Utilize Adobe Illustrator to create eye-catching logos for a design company

Process: I first began the project by spending several hours sketching. I’m new to Illustrator, so I wanted to

stretch myself, but maintain a simple and clean design for the three different logos. I then selected

four of my sketches and began to design the logos on the computer. For my first logo, I typed “wink.”

Then, using the pen tool, I drew a line and curved it by moving the anchors to the line to link the k to

the i. I created a smaller line and made it curve using the same method to create a wink symbol and

placed it over the dot of the i. For the second, I created a shape and then put the text in. I used the

emboss tool to create the unique border. For my last design, I created another shape and placed the

text within. Using the pen tool, I once again created the curves needed for the design.

FlierDescription:This is a black and white flier to promote an upcoming graduate leadership conference.

Date:May 10, 2014

Course/Instructor:COMM150

Cory Kerr

Objectives:Learn how to use shape tools to influence positive and negative space in design

Implement photographs into Adobe InDesign

Process:

I began creating this flier by sketching out several different layouts on scratch paper. I then designedfour final sketches from those original ideas. I then used these sketches as guides towards a final

sketch that would be my main guide while working on my digital design on Adobe InDesign. I used two

different fonts to differentiate the main text from the title and important time-date-place information. I

used various shapes in order to catch the eye, as well as a picture to create visual stimulation.

Event AdDescription:This is a color full-bleed advertisement to promote flower donations using Microsoft Word and a scan-

ner.

Date:May 17, 2014

Course/Instructor:COMM150

Cory Kerr

Objectives:Utilize photography skills to make a simplistic add

Implement photographs into Adobe InDesign

Process: I scanned in the image of the door and flowers and inserted it into word. I originally had the image

covering only half of the advertisement, but it looked better once I enlarged it. I decided to keep it

simple, so I used a basic font for my title and matched the color of the text to the color of one of

the flowers. I used a light text for my body copy, but decided it would stand out more and look better

with a faded white box behind the text. I changed the color to a shade of indigo in order to match the

flowers.
