The Tata Motors India Limited, the Indian international automobile manufacturer has the

new hatchback Tiago ready for an early launch. The TML is slowly replacing their aged

models and the Tiago is supposed to replace the Tata Indica. Originally named Zica, the

car has been re-christened as Tiago.

Launch date

The TML had originally scheduled the launching of this budget hatchback during the 2016

Indian Auto Show. Now the launching has been fixed for March 28. The booking for the

Variants and prices

The Tata Tiago will have petrol and diesel variants. All the variants will have 5-speed

manual transmission. The trims are expected to follow the pattern of the Bolt and the

Zest. The pricing of the Tiago will be competitive, as it has to compete with some popular

cars in the segment like the Maruti Suzuki Celerio and the Hyundai Grand i10. The car is

expected to have a price tag of Rupees 4 to 5.5 lakh.

Exteriors

The Tiago is the third Tata car based on the HORIZONEXT philosophy, which makes it

zippy. Built on the XO platform the Tiago plugs the big gap between the little Nano and

the bigger Bolt. The fascia is completely different from that of the Indica except for the

smiling honeycomb grille. The features differentiating the car from the other Tata

vehicles are the curvy headlamps, and large rounded rear bumper with chrome surrounded

fog lamps, a character chrome line between the headlights, prominent creases across the

shoulder and a rear spoiler.

Interiors

The cabin of the Tiago is comfortable and safe. The features include two air bags, ABS,

EBD, a manual AC, power windows, electronic power steering, electrical ORVMs, rear

defogger, rear wiper, a Herman 8 speaker music system, Bluetooth connectivity and turn-

by-turn navigation facility using smart phones.

Rear leg space and shoulder room is good, though the Tiago is slightly low on headroom.

Engines

The Tiago will be powered by 1.2L, 84 bhp and 114 NM torque petrol engines giving

mileages of 18 to 19 kmpl. The diesel variants will have 1.05 litre, 64 bhp and 140 NM

torque engines giving mileages of 25 kmpl.

Dimensions

The physical dimensions of the Tiago are 3746 mm length, 1647 mm width, 1535 mm

height, 2400 mm wheel base and 170 mm ground clearance. The boot size is 242 mm and

the tyres are 175/65-14” type.

Suspension

The suspensions are dual path McPherson struts at the front and twisted beams at the

rear.

Our views

The Tata Tiago is expected to be a popular hatchback in the market. The sporty looks,

decent mileages, good handling capabilities and competitive prices are the plus points of

the car. Addition of AMT variants will make the Tiago more attractive.
