Introduction to Target Audiences

What is a target audience? To find your target audience it is split up into 4 sections. These 4 sections are: demographics, psychographics, life style and media consumption. All films have a particular target audience and all films also will have a primary (main) audience they want to attracts and a secondary audience they will want to attract.

What are Demographics?

This is a way of characterising the segments of the human population so that a film or TV programme can try and identify the target audience. The way people can be classified is according to Age, Sex, Social Class and Ethnicity. Films will target an age group and base their film and advertising to try and gain customers/viewers in a specific age range. They can try and target both genders in different ways - sometimes appealing to men or women through action scenes which appeal to men, or certain attractiveness of men / women. They will choose characters of the film which feature a particular class or ethnicity to target this in their audience.

What are Psychographics?

Grouping people in a similar way to demographics except rather than grouping people through class it groups people into their beliefs and values. It allows people with different classes but the same attitudes to be placed together despite leading completely different lifes.

Psychographics; this comes into the seven types of people in the world: The Explorer, The Aspirer, The succeeder, The Reformer, The Mainstream, The Struggler & The Resigned. The explorer is driven by discovery, young in nature, but not in reality. They respond to new brands and new sensations. They will go for discovery films. The Aspirer are driven by others. The Aspirer is for materialistic, acquisitive who are driven by others perceptions of them rather than by their own values. An attractive pack is important to them in being superficial. The succeeder possesses self-confidence, have a strong goal orientation and tend to be very organised. Seeking reward and prestige. They like to be branded as what they feel they deserve. Aggressive attitude towards life means they need to relax on occasion. Their core need in life is control. Reformers have their own view on most things and like to keep it that way. They’re socially aware and pride themselves on tolerance. However, unlike explorers they will not buy things just because they are new. Their core need in life is enlightenment. The mainstream are people who live in the world of the domestic and the everyday. They like routine and their name implies that they are the largest group of people within the 4Gs across the world. They like the more established brands and focus on family. Their core need in life is security. Strugglers live for today and don’t plan for tomorrow. Often seem as victims by others with little to offer other than their physical skills. Depending on a lottery ticket rather than themselves. In essence, they seek escape. The resigned, these are predominantly older people with constant, unchanging values built up other time through memories and objects. The past to them is a warm nostalgic glow. Respecting institutions and enjoy acting traditionally. Driven by the economy and safety within it. They chose above all what is familiar to them. In life, their aim is basic: it is to survive.

What is life-style?

Our opening scene is likely to appeal to: The succeeder, Explorer and Aspirer. It’s originality and mental play will be enjoyable for those who are open to new ideas. Likely to be appealing to those who aren’t on a large salary as they are unlikely to be interested in the goal of the opening which is the narrative enigmas created by the gritty camera work within the disorientation caused by drink and drugs. Mainstreams and the Resigned are the groups most likely not to be interested as it’s social connection will be hard to relate to for them.

Media consumption.

Likely TV channels: E4, C4, MTV, BBC Three and ITV 2. These Channels are all appealing to the younger generation willing to televise anything that is likely to appeal to certain psychographic groups.

Likely Newspapers: The sun, Daily Star. Mostly read by those into stories that are unlikely but are possible. Our story is edgy and exciting and if true it would be very likely to printed in by both papers.

Film magazines e.g. Odeon article. A short thriller it could be easily fit into this small booklet found at the cinema allowing it to be advertised.

Likely Websites: Complex, Hypebeast, Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites. All used by the target audience. Being posted on any of these websites would be likely as it would grab the attention of those that use these sites.

DemographicsThe main percentage of age range for this film ( Taken ) which is 15-24 which is 38% and 25-34 is 37%. These age ranges are perfect for us and our target audience. The male percentage is 54% and for our opening scene we are targeting men as our primary target audience and women is 46% which in our opening scene we are trying to attract men then make it a little feminine for women to be interested. To maximise the views on our video we want to make it appeal to all classes ( E-A) Taken is a good film which varies across the board in class, AB - 21% C1 - 37% C2 - 21% DE - 21%. As our Opening scene we want to attract all classes, make it intelligent so the AB classes have to think about what is happening, and exciting enough for the students or low skilled jobs to have interest in the film.

Demographics

Limitless is about a man who takes a drug to make him access all his brain and how it affects him. The age range on this film is mostly above 15-45+ people which is 97% and the other 3% is 7-11. The age range is ideal for our film and as it is a thriller it will help us aim to our primary target audience. The gender which has attracted to this film the most on statistics was Female with 53%. This can help us to try and make our opening scene more female friendly. at the higher end of the class scale ( C1 - AB ) have a higher percentage ( 74% ) over the lower classes ( C2 - DE ) which is only 26%. This can help us target the higher end of the classes as we need to make our opening smart so they can be interested in it.
