Presents to you...
The Mayor of Bishop Auckland, Councillor David Fleming, took great pleasure in presenting certificates and trophies to the winners of the 2013 Bishop Auckland in Bloom
Competition at the Town Hall recently. This competition was started in the early 90s and organised by Bishop Auckland Civic Society. However, when the Town
Council was established, the Civic Society thought it a good idea if the Council took it over and this is its fifth year under the Town Council’s care. There were 29 entries this year, which was only one up on last year despite opening up the competi-tion to the whole of Bishop Auckland. All entries were judged on Sunday 28th July by Mr. Mike Whatmore, who was accompanied by the Coun-cillor Alan Anderson (Chair of the Allotments and Environment Committee) and Linda Goldie (Assistant Town Clerk). Mr. Whatmore used to be a Horticulture Lecturer, who started off life as a golf green-keeper and worked in the orchid nurseries at Kew Gardens. The overall winner of the event was Mr Stan Brownlee from Rosehill Estate. The Town Council would like to thank Deco Trophies and Engraving from Tindale who has kindly sponsor the event every year by way of donating and engraving all the trophies.
Shildon and Bishop Auckland Area Action Partnership has recently launched a ‘Your Area, Your Money, Your Views Community Grants Fund.’‘Not for profit’ community groups or organisations in this AAP area can apply for a grant ranging from £500 to £5,000. Applications must address local priorities identified for the area, including Crime and Community Safety, Employment and Job Prospects or Children and Young People. For your application pack contact the AAP at [email protected] or call 03000 268663.Applications close on 13th September 2013.The final decision on where the funding goes will be made by members of the public at a voting event, which will take place on Saturday 16th November
2013 at Bishop Auckland College.Groups whose applications meet the funding criteria will need to promote their projects locally and encour-age people to go along and vote.A spokesperson for the Shildon and Bishop Auckland AAP commented, “This way of awarding money has already proved successful in other AAP areas, where hundreds of people turned up to cast their vote.“At the voting events, members of the public will also have the opportunity to help the council decide how future savings in the authority’s overall budget can be made.“At a time of increased pressure on council budgets, the authority recognises the importance of ensuring the public are able to influence decision-making.”

Plans drawn up for new school
An artist’s impression of the new school.
Plans to re-build part of King James I Academy have been drawn up.The redevelopment is part of a Government ini-tiative, which will see 27 schools across the North East, Yorkshire and Hum-berside upgraded to meet the 21st century needs of students. The proposal includes con-struction of a 950 place two-storey school, which will accommodate 70% of
the departments, with the remainder being housed in the refurbished Middle School. The existing main building, which was built in 1976, will then be de-molished to create sports pitches.A spokesperson for the school commented, “We have continued to work with Sir Robert McAlpine and Space Group, through-out the Summer holidays, to fine tune designs and to
ensure that we achieve the best possible outcome. We are currently choosing the colours for departments’ feature walls and the floor covering for all buildings.“To have moved so quickly from our successful bid to a point where we are con-sidering the finer details is impressive; building work is anticipated to start in December and we expect rapid progress during this first phase.”

Cancer charity group cleans up at carwash fundraiser
It was bumper to bumper all day at soapycar.com on Abraham Enterprise Park, Tindale Crescent, on Saturday 31st August, as local people flocked to support a fundraising event for Cancer Research UK.The carwash company agreed to donate every penny of the takings on the day to Cancer Research UK. Soapycar.com owner, Mandy Humphrey, was delighted with the support the event received, with
people flocking from far and wide to have their cars washed and support the initiative. The event was part of a year-long campaign run by a group of ladies from Bishop Auckland and Chilton who aim to raise £4,000 for cancer charities.Volunteers and staff worked tirelessly on the day to make sure that the many cars were washed and the company and the ladies would like to extend
their thanks to all those who supported the event and the local businesses who aided in the promotion of the event. “Thanks to the generos-ity of the customers, over £650 was raised and the money will go direct to Cancer Research UK,” said a spokesperson.Latest news and informa-tion about the ladies’ next fundraising event can be found on the Facebook page ‘£4000 to Combat Cancer’.

What’s on at the Town Hall?
On Sunday 15th September, local lad Michael Green will be taking on the task of running the renowned 13.1 mile Bupa Great North Run.After giving up smoking 2 years ago, Michael, from Arthur Terrace, took up running as a hobby and he wanted to set himself a challenge and raise funds and awareness for charity.Michael’s cousin Laura Green was diagnosed with Quadraplegia and speech difficulties with Cerebral Palsy, which was due to a very premature birth. At 4 years-old there was
no conductive education in the Durham Area. Laura went through the educa-tion system and now, at nearly 30 years of age, she lives in the Percy Hedley residential department where she is supported to live a full and interest-ing life. Michael wanted to give something back to the charity that has given so much love and care for Laura and the family. The Percy Hedley founda-tion looks after children and adults with Cerebral Palsy and also children and adults with speech, language and communica-
tion difficulties. This will be the second year Michael will be running the Great North Run for Percy Hedley but with an aim of raising double the amount of £553 that he raised last year. This will help Percy Hedley provide vital services, specialist equip-ment and facilities in the North East.If you would like to make a donation, or to find out more about the charity, visit Michael’s Virgin Money sponsor-ship website at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/MICHAELGREEN6.

Michael John Thompson failed to appear at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court and his solicitor could offer no explanation for his non-attendance, so his case went ahead in his absence. The 21 year-old, of Harthope Grove, Bishop Auckland, faced four charges arising out of a road traffic incident on 19th January. At around 3am that morning, a member of the public called police stating that there had been an accident and that someone was trapped inside the vehicle. When officers arrived at the scene, on the East Howle Road, near Metal Bridge, they found Thompson sitting inside the Ford Transit Van. He claimed that someone else had been driving, but snow on the ground showed only one set of footprints.Thompson was taken to Durham University Hospital
but refused to give breath or blood specimens, for which he was charged, along with driving without a licence or insurance. The Ford Transit belongs to the defendant’s father and had been left in a secure state outside of his house. He had left the keys on a kitchen worktop and his son did not have permission to take the vehicle. Michael Thompson gave no replies to the ques-tions posed by police in an interview on 24th January and magistrates learned that the defendant has 16 previous convictions, which include taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent and other motoring related offences. The case was found proven in his absence and was adjourned until 11th September with the chairman of the bench commenting that “the de-fendant needs to be here.”
A celebration of County Durham’s history, heritage and culture next week will include free admission to dozens of fascinating build-ings and attractions, in-cluding - for the first time - Auckland Castle.Heritage Open Days 2013 will also include the chance to try out a new skill, take a one-off guided tour or enjoy behind the scenes access to venues that are not normally open to the public. This year’s programme runs from Thursday 12th September to Sunday 15th September, and the majority of activities are led by volunteers who have a wealth of knowledge and expertise to share with the public.Cllr Neil Foster, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for economic re-generation, said. “There are 70 venues taking part in Heritage Open Days 2013, all offering people the chance to discover something new on their doorstep.“And it’s not just a chance to visit one of the county’s dozens of historic build-ings, there’s so much more to make the most of – from becoming a stonemason for the day or taking a 1950s coach trip around the Dales to enjoying live music in the beautiful surroundings of Old Durham Gardens. “I’d encourage everyone
to get hold of a guide and start planning now for some fantastic days out and unique experiences.”Buildings offering free admission during Heritage Open Days include Durham Town Hall, the DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery, Auckland Castle, Binches-ter Roman Fort and East Durham Heritage and Lifeboat Centre.
All activities are free and details are listed in the Heritage Open Days booklet 2013, which is available from libraries, Customer Access Points and participating venues.More information is also available at www.durham.gov.uk/heritageopendays, by emailing [email protected] or by calling 0300 267 133.

Ruth Ockendon Laycock and Barbara Bates have expressed their apprecia-tion to Wilson’s Veterinary Group in Bishop Auckland on behalf of Cats Protection Wear Valley and Darlington branch. On Bank Holiday Monday the dressed up as black and white cats and ran a charity stall in their car park at their 20th birthday cel-ebration event, where they raised the wonderful sum of £92.11 in just two hours.
Marion Maychell, the local Cats Protection co-ordinator, was thrilled when Marc, a gentleman from Switzerland offered to double the takings via Pictures-of-Cats, a website for which the ladies vol-untarily write. He kindly rounded his donation up to £100, which gave a much-needed boost to the money they raised. Barbara commented, “Every penny will go to help needy cats of which
there are many at present. All local Sanctuaries are overflowing with unwanted cats and kittens which people are unable to afford to care for.“Cats Protection are im-portant in that they keep these cats off the streets and re-home as many as possible. Also, the charity helps people on a low income with neutering costs for their cats, all paid for by funds raised by vol-unteers.”
Marie Curie Cancer Care are setting up a new vol-unteer fundraising group in the Bishop Auckland and Shildon area and are on the hunt for volunteers. The first pre-group meeting will be held at Sainsbury’s Café in Bishop Auckland on Wednesday 25th September, from 6.30pm.A spokesperson for the charity commented, “Fundraising groups make an enormous difference locally by helping to raise the vital funds we need so that Marie Curie Nurses can continue to provide free care to people with terminal illnesses in their own homes.“By being part of Marie
Curie’s new fundraising group, you will help by organising fundraising activities and collections in the local community, encouraging new volun-teers to help the charity, as well as supporting Marie Curie’s major fund-raising campaigns such as the Great Daffodil Appeal and Blooming Great Tea Party.”If you are interested in helping Marie Curie Cancer Care to set up a new vol-unteer fundraising group, or to find out more about other ways to support the charity, contact Marie Curie Community Fund-raiser Lucy King on 0191 2191243 or at [email protected].

Darya Hussein pleaded not guilty to four charges when he appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates’ Court recently, and matters were sent to the Crown Court at Durham on 18th September. The 22 year-old, whose bail conditions mean he must reside at an address in Clairville Road, Mid-dlesbrough and not enter Bishop Auckland, had pre-viously lived in Cambridge Court, Bishop Auckland, and it was there, during the early hours of 18th August, that events took place which led to this
court appearance. Police received a call from a woman who was con-cerned about an on-going row and fight between two males, as well as a further call from another woman who had fled from one of the men.Hussein was reported to have waved a kitchen knife, shouting, “I’m going to kill you,” before entering the communal area of the flats and pushing a woman to the floor. He then repeat-edly stabbed the door of Peshtiwan Ahmadi’s flat, before going into the car
park, where he repeat-edly stabbed a Honda Civic, belonging to Osman Mahmoud, causing damage to the rear passenger door and panel. The defendant instructed the duty solicitor that a knife had not been involved and pleaded not guilty to four charges. The Bench declined ju-risdiction in the case, as the charge of threatening persons with a knife had given rise to concern that there was immediate risk of serious physical harm, before releasing Hussein on conditional bail.

BACC clean sweep of Cups
Bishop Auckland Cricket Club have made it a clean sweep of all three Division One knock out trophies by comfortably beating Marton 2nd X1 by nine wickets in the final of the 15’s Com-petition, sponsored by Teesside University. Skipper James Robinson put the opposition in to bat and they made 97-8 from their 15 overs. Matty Lambert and Ben Thompson took two wickets each and James Alderson was out-standing in the field, taking two good catches and a run out. The total was reached comfortably in 12.3 overs, with Craig George and Carl McGregor both not out on 45 and 43 respectively. Man-of-the-Match was awarded to Carl on the strength of his runs and taking one wicket for only 18 runs. The first team now need to concentrate their efforts on gaining promotion to the
Premier Division and recent results have given a stark reminder that it won’t be all plain sailing. Their last three league games have produced a win, loss and a draw to leave them in second place, just one point behind leaders Marske. With Seaton Carew also in title contention, it was vital that Bishop came out on top and, in a closely fought contest, Bishop took the 20 points for the win beating their opponents by 3 wickets at Kingsway. The visitors made 130-9 with Carl McGregor the pick of the bowlers with 4-14 from only 7 overs. Craig George was again the top scorer with 56 not out, holding the innings together on a difficult wicket. In an 8 wicket defeat at relegation threatened Blackhall, Bishop batted first and could only muster 119, with Nigel Turner the only batsman to make a meaningful score with 43.
Frustratingly for Nigel, that was the third time this season that he has got into the 40s and failed to go on to make his half century. Third bottom Blackhall easily reached the target with the loss of only two wickets to record a surprise win. The drawn game was against Darlington RA. The RA were all out for 170 runs with Carl McGregor bowling well to take his sixth 5 wicket haul of the season. Bishops reply got off to a disastrous start with 3 early wickets down for only 8 runs on the board, their task therefore became one of damage limitation. They ended up at the close with 107-6, Carl digging in for a gritty 48 runs from 141 balls. With three league games remaining they are going to need every bit of that grit to ensure that they finish in the top two for promotion to the Premier Division.
