Cleaning effects
Impact has a good cleaningeffect especially at short dis-tances. Soil is removed due tohigh kinetic energy of the dro-plets coming from the nozzle. Therefore big droplets that tra-vel with a high speed are re-quired. This can be used forremoving soil which is difficultto remove and cannot be dis-solved in the cleaning medi-um.
But the cleaning effect by im-pact is reduced when the dro-plets have to travel longer dis-tances before hitting the tankwall. This is because they loosspeed and tend to disintegra-te into smaller droplets. Anyobstacle between tankcleaning nozzle and tank wallreduces the impact behind tozero (see spray shadow)
A free falling filmis created by theliquid when itruns down a tankwall. When thefilm is thickenough there areturbulences inside it whichcreate shear forces that areable to clean
medium to easy removablesoil. This is not so sensitiveagainst spray shadows.
The chemical cleaning effecttakes part in almost all tank
cleaning appli-cations because either the soil isdissolved in thecleaning mediumor the bondingbetween soil andtank surface is reduced.
Typical applications
- Position the tank cleaning nozzle(s) at the center ofthe tank, roughly one-quarter of the distance fromtop to bottom.
- Nozzles invariably leave an unsprayed shadow areadirectly overhead, the size of which varies accordingto the type of nozzle and the piping.
- The distance between the top of the tank and thenozzle should amount to approximately one-quarterof the nozzle’s action radius. Size your unit to ensu-re sufficient flow to the top part of the tank wall.
- The film of liquid grows thicker toward the bottom ofthe tank, where the washing effect is the most pro-nounced.
- Standing water reduces impact and allows solids toaccumulate. Make sure that the drain can handlewhatever you put into the tank.
- The longest spray distance is from the nozzle to thebottom corner, so the nozzle should be sized for this»effective washing distance«.
All pressure data are stated in terms of differential pressu-re directly at the nozzle, so be sure to take the line-pres-sure drop into account.

Support for application and operation
Spray shadows
With baffles and agitator, asingle cleaning device can’teffectively clean the whole in-terior of the reactor vessel. With a single cleaning device, the baffles and agitator giveraise to shadow areas andobstruct direct impingementof the cleaning nozzle fluidspays on these tank areas.
“LINE OF SIGHT” The limitation of any spraynozzle is that it cannot effecti-vely impact on a surface thatcannot be seen from thenozzle’s position
Single tank cleaning unit
Multiple spray sources areneeded to compensate for theshadowing effect to providecomplete spray coverage.
Two tank cleaning units
As rule, the number ofcleaning nozzles should cor-respond with the number ofbaffles.
Installation height influen-cing Impact angle
Generally the best cleaningresult is achieved when thecleaning liquid hits the tankwall perpendicularly.
Nozzles too close to the cei-ling will cause the impact ofthe spray to deflect off the cur-ved tank ceiling cleaning effi-ciency is lost. This leads o re-sidual soil in the “problemareas”
Spray follows ceiling
Mounted lower in the tank, thenozzles impact more effective-ly and the wash tends to rundown the ceiling for betterwet-out of the surfaces to becleaned.
Distance
The position of the tankcleaning device is also deter-mined by the effective throwlength of the cleaning device. Each spray has a certain ran-ge in which the removal of thecorresponding soil is effective. The range is usually given bythe manufacturer and dividedinto cleaning and rinsing dis-tance. If the tank is biggerthan the throw length of thechosen tank cleaning device itis necessary to use two ormore of them.
In vertical tanks with acone/dome, the tank cleaningmachine must be installed ona down pipe of about 0,23 xtank diameter D (m). In this case, the down pipe lengthcreates a corner of about 25°between the tank dome andthe largest horizontallycleaning radius.
Remark:Planning to locate a Spray device in a tank nomatter how thorough it is done can never givea guarantee that the CIP process is performedwell. A trial will be always unavoidable.

How to choose a good tank cleaning nozzle
The following step-by-steprun down will help you defineyour cleaning task and get themost out of our correspondingproducts.
Begin by analyzing yourcleaning task:
How large is the tank interms of size and interiorsurface area?
Where is the dirt located;how bad is it; and what isits nature?
Which method of cleaningis required: strong blasts ofcleaner or repetitive rin-sing?
What kind of cleaning che-micals are you using?
Are there any internal obs-tacles (e.g., mixing vanes)?
More information on page 4.
In defining your tankcleaning nozzle installation,be sure to observe the follo-wing three parameters:
1) Rinsing effect – a functionof flow rate
Ascertain the requisite liquidflow rate by trial and error asa function of the applied pres-sure.
All points of relevanceshould be turbulently cir-cumswept/rinsed by anadequately thick film ofcleaning liquid.
In comparison with rotatio-nal cleaners, static sprayballs require roughly twiceas much liquid flow.
Remember: Your drainmust be able to handlewhatever you’re putting inthe tank.
More information on page 3
2) Force of impact – helpsstrip off crusty dirt
The force of impact dependson:
 ...adherence to the optimaloperating pressure rangefor the type of nozzle inuse;
 ...the right action radius andvolumetric flow for the sizeof tank in question;
...concentration of the sprayjets on the most badly soi-led areas, e.g., 270° up ordown
The higher the pressure, thesmaller the droplet size. Con-sequently, more flow is betterthan more pressure.
In case of internal obsta-cles, either use severalnozzles or place the nozzleat different locations.
Slowly rotate any mixingpaddles or the like duringthe cleaning process.
To avoid damages the rota-tion nozzle should not re-main in the liquid while theplant is in operation.
Check with your local Lechler nozzle- applica -tion advisor about the requirements for yourparticular application. The ”Questionnaire tank cleaning nozzles“on pages 26 and 27 helps you to establish theimportant parameters.
3) Proper positioning – foroptimal targeting
This depends on the actionradius of the nozzles, whichare typically mounted forhorizontal spraying at thecenter and for verticalspraying in the upper quar-ter of the tank, dependingon the liquid level.
6
General design families
Free-spinning heads
The cleaning liquid turns thespray head by means of spe-cially positioned nozzles. Ra-pid-repetition impact loosensthe dirt and washes it off ofthe tank surfaces. The effect isbest at low pressures in smallto medium-size tanks. See pages 11 to 20 fornozzle design families
Internal regulated drive
The liquid flow powers thehead by an internal turbine.Either a gear reduction or ahydraulic brake is used tocontrol the rotation. Hence theproduced droplets are biggerand hit the tank wall with hig-her velocity. This keeps thespeed of the head within itsoptimal range across a widerspan of pressures, and thenozzle develops more power-ful spray propagation and a wider range. See page 22 for XactCleanNozzles,
 See page 21 for AccuCleannozzles
Programmed rotation machines
Here, the cleaning fluid drivesvia the turbine an internal gear reducer that keeps thesprayer turning in two planes. In the course of a spraying cycle, the jets sweep the entireinside surface of the tank ac-cording to a preprogrammed,model- specific pattern. This takes a certain amount of time, but these models generate the highest jet pressures (= force of impact)and are therefore ideal forvery large tanks and the toughest of cleaning tasks. See page 23 for the 5TMdesign family
Static spray balls
Static spray balls do not rota-te, so they require a compara-tively large amount of liquid inorder to generate turbulentflow. They are used primarilyfor washing down relativelysmall tanks and vessels. See pages 24 and 25 forspray balls
Common characteristics:
Low-pressure application.Your benefit: lower energyconsumption coupled withless wear and tear.
Rotational cleaners: drivenand lubricated by thecleaning liquid.Your benefit: no need for elaborate drive mechanisms.
7
Mounting configurations Requirements for critical CIP applications
Typical washing sequences
A thorough tank cleaning se-quence depends on the inter-action between the soil, thecleaning solution and sprayimpact. This type of process isused in many applications:
Pre-Rinse: Begin with lowgrade or »used« water torinse the interior, washingout the heaviest soil.
Alkali Wash: Use a mild so-lution such as 1 % sodiumhydroxide or TSP. This re-moves most types of depo-sits
Second rinse: Follow withcleaner water to rinse outthe alkali. This water canbe used next time for thepre-rinse
Acid Wash: A mild acidwash will neutralize any al-kalinity and remove mine-ral deposits
Final Rinse: Use yourcleanest water which willnot be recirculated, as thefinal step
This approach is not suitablefor every application but it isadaptable. The degree of soi-ling and cleaning chemicalselection will determine howmany times you can use thesame chemicals and rinsewater. If the pre-rinse is effec -tive, it can extend the life ofthe others.
Documentation
Once the sequence is estab -lished, all steps of the processshould be documented forconsistency in future operati-ons. This includes many ope-rational details:
Washing sequence withnumber of execution timesfor each step
 Cleaning chemical selec-tion and concentration
 Washing temperatures andpressures
Maximum time betweenthe shut-down of the pro-cess and cleaning cycle
Operation of any internalequipment, mixers, etc.
Manual valve settings, equipment disassembly orother personnel-dependentoperations
Order information and ope-ration parameters of the in-stalled nozzle
CIP-nozzles for sanitary applications
Some installations leave thecleaning nozzle in the tankduring production cycles suchthat it has contact with theproduct. If the product is criti-cal, such as food or pharma-ceutical materials, the nozzlehas to be designed followingspecific protocols so that it willnot contaminate the product.
We are welcome to help youwith your choice.
Mounting configurations
All Lechler tank cleaning nozz-les are designed to be moun-ted on a pipe. However thereare several options for makingthe connection:
ThreadedMost designs use a female pi-pe thread for mounting on amale threaded pipe.
Slip-onNozzles for sanitary use donot use threads, but slip aro-und the end of a pipe that hasa cross hole drilled.A pin is then inserted to holdthe head in place.
Tri-ClampFood and beverage manufac-turers use tri-clamp connectorsto join pipe. Some tank clea-ning nozzles are availablewith a compatible flange tomate with those. Each productsection des cribes the moun-ting opt ions in detail.
See separate product des -criptions from page 11 on fordetailed connection data.

6. Obtain an overviewof the identification
Now it is important to obtainthe right identification for yourequipment or to acquireequipment with the correctidentification. In addition to theusual data on the rating plate, such as the serial numberand manufacturer, the identification also calls for the following information:
1. Arrange the equip-ment into groups
The identification first requiresthe declaration of an equip-ment group. The pieces ofequipment are divided intoGroups I and II, according tothe area in which they areused.
Group I: Potentially explosive areas underground (mining industry)
Group II: Other potentially explosiveareas
2. Determine the potentially explosiveatmosphere
You must then determine thepotentially explosive atmosphere in which theequipment is used. As before, there is a division into twoareas.
G: Gas atmospheresD: Dust atmospheres
3. Divide by zone
In order to know which safetyrequirements apply to equip -ment, protective systems andcomponents, you must dividethe potentially explosive areasin your company into zones. The respective zone deter -mines the category of safetyrequirement according towhich the equipment andcomponents must be tested.According to the regula tion, zones 0 – 2 apply to potential-ly explosive atmos pheres ofgas, vapour or mist and zones20 – 22 apply to dust atmospheres, whereby:
Zone 0/20: for continuous, prolonged, frequent occurren-ce of the potentially explosiveatmosphere
Zone 1/21: for occasional oc-currence during normal ope-ration
Zone 2/22: for rare or short-term occurrences
4. Have the right equipment tested
In the next step, you, as themanufacturer or user, determi-ne which of your equipmentmust be given a CE mark ac-cording to the directive in viewof their use in Zones 0 – 1(Gas) or 20 – 21 (Dust).

Spray balls are useful for certain types of applica-tions, although they are not as effective for mostcleaning tasks as a comparable rotating nozzle. Theydo have specific advantages:
No moving parts Self draining Easy mounting for inspection Traditionally used in sanitary environments
Since rotating nozzles depend on their turning actionfor full cleaning, if the unit stops for some reason, parts of the tank may not be cleaned. There is no such concern with a static head. However, they can develop cleaning voids if debris collects inthe head and blocks individual orifices. Spray balls re-quire higher flow rates than rotating nozzles, usuallyat least 2 to 3 times the amount of liquid.
