INTRODUCTIONWelcome to the Gulf Stream Council Camp Leaders Program Guide. In this Pro-gram Guide you will find the information and schedules you need to prepare for a great camping experience with your Scouts. A section about each session of camp has been prepared by the program staff. You’ll find arrival and departure times and locations, daily schedules, a listing of other activities planned throughout the week, and an overview of what to expect from your week at camp.

TANAH KEETA HISTORYIn 1952 the good folks in Washington, DC signed a bill giving Section 15 of Camp Murphy to Gulf Stream Council. While the rest of Camp Murphy eventu-ally became known as Jonathan Dickenson State Park, the one square mile, or 640 acres, of Section 15 became the Tanah Keeta Scout Reservation! Four years later, our Council gave Camp Osborne (now known as John Prince Park and Scout Hill) back to Palm Beach County and then in 1957 Tanah Keeta hosted its first Summer Camp!

This year marks the beginning of the second half century of Scouting here at Tanah Keeta. Many changes have occurred over the years, but one thing has remained the same: Scouts love to camp, and Summer Camp is the highlight of the year for most of them. Leaders know that the one single thing they can do to keep their Scouts in Scouting for another year is to take them to camp. The fun, excitement, fellowship, and advancement opportunities are tremendous!

FEESBe sure to take advantage of the Early Bird savings by paying in full by the May 19th, 2010 deadline. The payment must be physically in the office by close of business that day. If mailing be sure to send it at least a week in advance.

All fees, including adult meal fees, are due two weeks prior to the start of your week at camp. The only fees to be paid at camp should be for a last minute addition.

If you learn of a Scout who will not be attending camp, please immediately contact the Gulf Stream Council Office in writing or e-mail to lower your count. Up until May 19th, 2010 you will only be charged the $25 no show fee for each Scout dropped; less than two weeks notice will require the Scout to meet the re-fund criteria found in this guide. Approved refunds will be made in early October directly to the unit through the registered Committee Chairman for all reserva-tions your unit has made.

Please print the Unit Camp Roster from Campersoft* and send in with the May 19th, 2010 payment or no later than June 9th, 2010. If there are any changes to the roster please come to camp with the changes and a new unit roster.

*Campersoft is the online program used to schedule meritbadge classes. This program provides all completion and partial completion merit badge information. Campesoft login will be emailed once the deposit has been paid and will be open for registration in March 2010.

Tanah Keeta GraceMay this food nourish our bodies, May life give us a smile, May the adventure always be with us, and may Tanah Keeta remain in our heart all the while. Amen

On a bend of the river Loxahatchee, lies a haven rare. It’s a place where our Council comes together,Fellowship to share.

Refrain:Tanah Keeta, Tanah Keeta,On your trails we have found,Beauty all should see, you must surely be,God’s own camping ground.

In the Glades, on the trail, and through the thicket,Woodland life does roam.Scent of wood smoke, the sound of boyhood laughter,This is Scouting’s home.

Sun so bright, and at night the star filled heavens,Grace the skies above.Sheltering pines, gently whispering in the breezes,Bless this land we love.(Refrain)

We, the Scouts, the Explor-ers, and the leaders,Sing our praise to thee. For the fun, and the friends and the adventureWe derive from thee.(Refrain)

Things You Need To KnowDISCIPLINE

Discipline is the responsibility of the adult leaders attending with their unit. Your 100% participation and involvement can prevent most behavior problems with your Scouts throughout the duration of camp. If you see a problem with a Scout who is not in your unit, notify their adult leader. Do not take the matter into your own hands unless it is a matter of safety.

KNIFE POLICYOnly Scouts who have earned and have brought their Totin’ Chit card can carry and use a knife, but only with adult supervision in a designated safe area. A Scout may purchase a locked blade knife in the Trading Post but must present a valid Totin’ Chit card. It is the adult leaders responsibility to make sure knives are used and stored safely while their scouts are at camp.

OUT OF CAMP EMERGENCIESDuring the business hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday call the Tanah Keeta Camp Office at (561) 746-8749 or the Gulf Stream Council Service Center Office at (561) 694-8585. If you are calling the Council Service Center; state the nature of the emergency and a contact name, unit number and phone number, and we will contact thecamp as soon as possible. Also understand that you may normally reach a voice recorder at the camp and can not guarantee an immediate call back, but we will get back to you.

YOUTH PROTECTIONBecause of the Boy Scouts of America’s concern about the problem of child abuse in our society, the Youth Protection policy has been developed in order to protect Scouts and their adult leaders. The Youth Protection training program is available through the Gulf Stream Council, which strongly suggests that every Scout leader receive this training before they come to camp, which is available online at

olc.scouting.org/info/ypt.htmlA Youth Protection Trained leader is required in order to get Tour

Permits approved. Please Bring Y.P. card and Tour Permit to camp.

Listed below are the guidelines needed to be followed on every Scout activity and outing.

4 No adult should be “one-on-one” with a Scout out of sight of others. If a Scout needs to be spoken to, make sure another adult is present or that you are in plain view of others.

4 The Scouts are required to be with a buddy (another Scout) at all times.

4 No adult is allowed to share a sleeping area with a Scout, nor is a Scout allowed to share a sleeping area with an adult, with an exception made for parents sleeping with their own Scout only. If you need to enter a Scout’s sleeping area, before entering announce your presence first and make sure another adult accompanies you.

4 In the shower areas in the event you feel it necessary to enter the while a scout is in the facility due to a behavior issue or possible injury, contact the camp office first and then you may enter only accompanied by another adult.

4 Any form of hazing, initiation, ridicule, put-downs, hitting, slapping, pushing, kicking, vulgar language, or teasing is prohibited and unaccept-able at all times from adult leaders and youths.

4 Adult leaders are to report any suspicion of abuse to the Camp Director immediately.

4 Any adult leaving or entering the camp is to report to the camp office. All adult leaders and youths are to wear armbands at all times, leaders are encouraged to also wear name badges. Anyone seen not wearing an armband is to be directed to the camp office.

4 Any adult leader must notify the Camp Director immediately upon arriving at camp if he knows of a Scout who will be leaving camp early or with someone other than with whom he arrived. Any adult leader who has a Scout who fails to arrive at camp, and that adult leader is not aware as to why, must notify the Camp Director immediately.

MORE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

TRADING POST CASH CARDSLeaders and parents have an opportunity this year to purchase cash cards for their boys to spend in the trading post. The cash cards may be purchased upon arrival to camp. The cards are available up to a value of $50. It is important for scouts and leaders to understand that cash will not be refunded for the gift cards. At the end of the week, any money remaining on the gift card should be spent before leaving camp.

BE PREPARED!!!Based on National Survey results...Scouts spend an average of $50 per week.Snacks, project kits, and miscellaneous supplies often add up quickly during the week so be prepared. Scouts should pack full Class ‘A’ Scout uniform as well as additional pairs of Scout socks. We suggest Scouts also bring two pairs of shoes (some may get wet) and several changes of “play” clothes. Scouts should read over the list of suggested items for camp found in their Scout handbook (pages 223 - 224).

THE “S” RULES4 Stay with a buddy.4 Stay within the camp boundaries.4 Slow Down.4 Shoes must be worn except in your sleeping bag or in the shower or in the pool. (Closed Toed Shoes Only At Camp)4 Sanitation. Scrub with soap.4 Stay out of other people’s stuff. Permission must be given to enter another’s sleeping area.4 Sticks and stones stay on the ground.

NO SMOKING AND NO ALCOHOL POLICY

Smoking is allowed only in a designated area in the parking lot, out of view of Scouts. At NO TIME will the use of alcohol be permitted in camp. If a leader or adult is found consuming or under the influence of alcohol, they will be sent home with arrangements being made through the other leaders.

VEHICLES IN CAMPThe only vehicles allowed beyond the parking lot are those transporting a troop trailer or equipment on the day of check-in and check out. Only troop trailers are allowed to remain in the campsite. All motor vehicles must be removed from campsites by Sunday at 6 p.m. and should beparked in the main parking lot during camp. Vehicles will not be allowed in camp throughout the week. If leaders are trading out during the week, they will need to hike in their belongings. Carts for handicapped Scouts or Scouters only will be allowed upon approval of the Camp Director, and must be requested one week prior to attending camp. After the troop is checked out Saturday at the end of camp, one (1) vehicle will be allowed back to the campsite to pull out the trailer or pack up gear.

VALUABLES IN CAMPPlease remember to guard your valuables while at camp and follow these tips to help enjoy your stay at camp.

4 Advise Scouts to bring as few valuables as possible.

4 Before you arrive, organize your troop banker system with a leader as the banker.

4 The Camp Leader should bring a lock box with them.

4 Advise your Scouts not to walk through any one else’s campsite.

4 Cash Cards are available in the Trading Post

SECURITY IN CAMPDue to the nature of society today we have implemented several security measures in camp that need to be followed for all persons in camp at any time.

4 All registered campers and adults must wear security wristbands while in camp (this is also your meal ticket).

A TYPICAL DAY AT CAMPMORNING ROUTINE: Each morning your Troop Guide will arrive in your campsite at 7:15 a.m. to wake up the boys. All campers will meet at the flagpoles in the campsite each morning at 7:45 a.m. for departure to the parade field for flag raising. Breakfast will be served in the dining hall at 8:00 a.m. Following breakfast the waiters under an adult unit leaders supervision will participate in assigned dining hall chores.

MEALS: Meals are served cafeteria style. One spot at each table will be designated for a staff person. Scouts and leaders are asked to enter the dining hall quietly and stand at their table until after grace. Meals will befollowed by a brief period of announcements, singing and merriment. The entire Troop should remain at their tables until dismissal. There should be one “waiter” for each table. (If your Troop is assigned 3 tables you will need to send 3 waiters.) Waiters report to the dining hall 15 minutes before each meal and under the direction of the dining hall steward set the tables and prepare for serving food. After the meal campers, including adults, will be dismissed and waiters remain at their table and receive instruction for cleanup from the dining hall steward. Waiters will return to their troop after being dismissed by the dining hall steward.Meals will be served daily at these times:

Breakfast 8:00 a.m. (waiters report at 7:45 a.m.)

Lunch 12:00 p.m. (waiters report at 11:45 a.m.)

Dinner 6:00 p.m. (waiters report at 5:45 p.m.)

MORNING PROGRAM: Throughout your time at camp your scouts will travel to various merit badge sessions in different program areas. At each merit badge, a Merit Badge Instructor will lead specific activities, games, crafts, hikes, and knowledge sessions to achieve completion of the merit badge. Adult leaders are encouraged to assist Merit Badge Instructors and help make the Scouts more successful in the planned activity.

B.O.B. (BODIES ON BUNKS) TIME: This quiet time lasts 30-45 minutes before lunch every day in your campsite, which ensures that everyone has the energy to last the day. Adult leaders supervise this lack of activity, or down time. During this time the Trading Post is open for adult leaders only.

AFTERNOON PROGRAM: Again during your time at camp your scouts will travel to various merit badge sessions in different program areas. At each merit badge, a Merit Badge Instructor will lead specific activities, games, crafts, hikes, and knowledge sessions to achieve completion of the merit badge. Adult leaders are encouraged to assist Merit Badge Instructors and help make the Scouts more successful in the planned activity.

“Open Program” is time when campers can choose from many available activi-ties (posted daily in the dining hall). It is also a great time for campers to visit the Trading Post, go on a hike, go swimming, etc!

EVENING ACTIVITIES: Each evening, a different fun activity is planned. These may range from a pool party with volleyball and Frisbee to a late night program of flashlight tag or a night hike in and around camp.

CAMPFIRES: The staff will lead 4 camp-wide campfires, an opening campfire (on your arrival day), Flag Retirement Campfire (Troop Participation is encour-aged), OA Pow Wow, and a closing campfire (night before you leave, Troop Participation is encouraged). Troop campfires can be held in the campsites in the evening. The variety of campfires will provide many opportunities for boys and their leaders to participate in songs, skits, games, etc.

BEING PREPARED FOR CAMPIn order to have a successful camp experience, please review the following suggestions to make sure your Scouts and leaders are prepared for camp.1. Before camp, know each Scout’s advancement status2. Determine which Scouts will participate in the high adventure programs i.e. COPE, PADI Scuba, Deep Sea Fishing, Whitewater Adventure, Applachian Adventure, etc.....3. Process your unit’s merit badge course selection online ASAP.4. Work on any prerequisites before coming to camp.5. Train for and use the patrol method in your troop.6. Assign 2 or more advanced Scouts to help with the younger Scouts.7. Keep accurate advancement records.8. Set a goal with each Scout ... challenge him to do his best.9. Hold a swim classification test prior to camp. See our web site for swim test form. All Scouts are required to take or have taken the swim test.10. Credit for previous completion of requirements should be noted in the Scout’s Handbook or bluecard. Every Scout should have their Scout Handbook in camp.

PROVISIONAL CAMPINGFamily vacation plans, illnesses, and many other reasons may prevent some Scouts from attending summer camp with their troop, but it should not keep those Scouts from the fun and adventure of Scout camping. Provisional camping, for Scouts who need to attend camp on an individual basis, is available during weeks 1 - 4 of summer camp. Either another troop or members of the camp staff will provide leadership. Please complete the Provisional Camper Application.

TROOP LEADERSHIP IN CAMP4 Every troop in camp must be under the supervision at all times by two or more registered adult leaders (one of which is over the age of 21).

4 All leaders must be registered members of your troop.

4 All leaders must show proof of current Youth Protection Training or must be trained within 24 hours after arrival in camp.

4 Leaders will promote the use of the buddy system within their campsite by their troop.

THE SCOUT UNIFORMWhy do the Boy Scouts have a uniform? A Scout uniform makes each Scout part of the team, it gives a standard to be met, promotes group spirit, and designates equality from the start among members within the group. While at camp the official Scout uniform is appropriate dress at anytime during the week. We encourage units to wear their uniform during chapel service and request that all scouts be in full uniform for dinner each eve-ning. Clothing at camp should uphold the standards of Scouting. Inappro-priate clothing advocating alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and other inappropriate content will not be permitted in camp.

SWIM CHECKSEvery Scout and adult leader must take a swim test to determine his or her ability level. Those levels are Learner, Beginner, and Swimmer. Troops can choose to go through a swim test prior to attending camp and bring the completed signed form with them, but it is up to the discretion of the camp aquatics director to accept that paperwork or require the troop to re-take a swim test upon arrival at camp.

MEDICAL RECHECKSEvery Scout and leader who attends camp must have a medical recheck upon arrival. The Health Officer or a designated person will recheck each person’s medical form in the presence of that person.

4 All Scouts (Youth and Adult Leaders) are required to have a current annual physical exam on file, signed by a physician.

- Scouts under the age of 18 The physical form must be signed by the Scout’s parent or legal guardian and notarized.

4 No one will be classified for swimming until the Health Officer receives the properly completed medical forms.

4 Health services rendered at camp are free; however, outside services may require payment. Please be prepared to provide insurance information on all your leaders and Scouts. - Tanah Keeta Scout Reservation is not responsible for paying off-camp medical services.

4 To speed up the medical recheck process, please have the Troop Medication Log completed prior to your Troop’s arrival at camp for all Scouts and adults requiring medication. - Label all medications with name, troop number, campsite, and quantity in the container (including aspirin, cough syrup, etc.) before coming to camp.
