Our stoneware clay is distinguished by it’s warm, buffcolor. It is formulated to fire at a low temperature toconserve energy.

GL A Z E S

The chemical make-up of our glazes is similar to thechemical make-up of limestone and marble, so theglazes coordinate well with many varieties of stone. ANCIENT WHITE Matte, stonelike, all-over, flowingglaze. Clay shows through the glaze on the design’sridges. PRIMAL WHITE Matte, stonelike, variegated glaze.Clay shows through the glaze in irregular markings.

GL A Z E VA R I AT I O N S

� The clay shows through the glaze more on some tiles,less on others – especially with Primal White. � Withinan order, the glaze will range from opaque to translu-cent, and from matte to sugary crystalline. � The heatof our kilns deepens the clay’s color to varying degrees,like an oven browns a batch of cookies. � Naturallyoccuring oxides in the clay create random streaks andspecks. � During firing, the glaze boils; as it cools, smallbubbles are sometimes frozen in time. � Small crazinglines are often apparent and may become more visibleover time. � We look at the tiles in each order to ensurethey exhibit an appealing range – neither too broad nortoo narrow. As a rule, the smaller the order, the narrow-er the desirable range.

Base of all tiles is 5/16 in thick.Tiles are handmade, so there is some variation in size.

IN S TA L L AT I O N

SUBSTRATE AND ADHESIVE Follow the guidelines of theTile Council of America. In most applications, thinsetmortar is suitable.SPACING As close as possible, preferably an eighth-inchapart or less.GROUT Off-white, sanded grout that matches glaze.SEAL Apply an invisible penetrating sealer/grout releasebefore grouting.GROUT REMOVAL Clean all grout off the tiles beforethe grout dries. If there is any excess dried grout afterinstallation, it can be removed with a chemical stonecleaner or stone stripper.RESEAL After the installation is fully dry, seal the tilesand grout with an invisible penetrating sealer.

MA I N T E N A N C E

� No special maintenance required. � Clean as youwould surrounding materials with common householdcleaners. � If the tiles have been neglected, built-up dirtand grime can be cleaned with commercial stone clean-ers. Even acid-based stone cleaners will not harm thetiles.

When I began to make tiles in 1990, I set out tomake tiles that would not simply look good untilthe fashion changed, but rather would look goodfor generations.

When I press my fingers into a slab of clay, I tryto follow my deepest instincts. These instincts areboth visual and tactile, and they are similar to theinstincts that have guided craftsmen since ancienttimes.

My hands and the clay engage in a friendly con-versation. Ridges and valleys begin to take shape.Simple, timeless patterns emerge almost as if theyhad been buried in the clay. The patterns are atonce extremely personal, and wholly of the ages.
