Take Home Exams: Using ExamSoft website

How to Download and Submit a Take Home Exam (PC and Mac)

Take-home exams will be downloaded from and submitted to the ExamSoft website at www.examsoft.com/mcgill

Take-home exams must be completed within the examination period. You may submit at any time of the day or night,

any day of the week, including weekends, as long as you respect the time constraints of the exam.

Downloading your take home exam

The following steps will guide you through downloading a take home exam.

1. Go to http://www.examsoft.com/mcgill

2. At the log in section marked Exam Takers, enter your 9-digit McGill ID and your assigned password (e.g. law####)

and click Login.

3. Click the Courses tab located at the top of the page. Click the Assignment Drop Box button.

4. Click the Download button next to the take home exam

5. The Download Exam File pop-up window appears. Click Download Assignment.

6. Save the exam file on your computer at a location where it can be easily accessed.

Warning: Timing will begin once the exam file is downloaded. Ensure you save and/or print the exam questionnaire as you will not be able to access it again.

7. Once the file has been downloaded, an Upload button will appear next to the exam name.

Submitting your take home exam

Use a word processing application to write your exam.

NOTE:

Use the Cover page for written work [.doc] for your take-home examination.

Identify your exam response by your 4–digit term specific exam number.

When you save the file, include your Exam Number, the course title and the term in the file's

name (example “1234 Business Law - Fall 2012.doc”).

Do not include your name or McGill ID number in your take-home exam answer file/submission

Students are advised to begin the upload process 30 minutes before the deadline to allow for any unforeseen technical problems.

After completing the exam, follow these steps to upload/submit your answer file.

1. Go to http://www.examsoft.com/mcgill

2. At the log in section marked Exam Takers, enter your 9-digit McGill ID and your assigned password (e.g. law####)

and click Login.

3. Click the Courses tab located at the top of the page. Click the Assignment Drop Box button.

4. Click the Upload button next to the exam that needs to be uploaded.

5. The Upload Answer File pop-up window appears. Notice the types of files that can be uploaded and make sure

your answer file that needs to be uploaded matches one of the file types.

6. Click the Browse button to browse for and locate your answer file.

WARNING: Ensure you select the correct file to upload. You will not be able to preview the file in the system prior to submission or view the file after it has been submitted or submit another file once your file has been uploaded.

7. Once answer file has been located, select it and click the Upload button.

8. A message that your file has been successfully uploaded appears. Click Done.

Students are also advised of the following when planning for a take-home examination(s):

Check the duration of your take-home examination (6hrs – 48 hrs). If you are unsure, ask the instructor to clarify

this in class;

Take-home examinations are to be individual exercises, and so confidentiality of questions and answers must be

maintained unless specific instructions are provided on the exam regarding student collaboration;

Support – Getting Help

Support is available during regular business office hours (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm) through the SAO located at NCDH, Room 433 or through the IT Support located in NCDH, Room 511.
