His research areas are Life Sciences Law, Neurolaw, Constitutional Law, European Law. He serves as a legal member both of the Ethics Committee, School of Medicine, University of Bonn (since 2003), of the Senate Commission on Genetic Research of the German Research Foundation DFG (since 2010), and as an ethics advisor for the ERC / under FP7 and Horizon2020 respectively. He has also served as a member of the UNESCO Group of Experts “A database of legislation, guidelines and regulations in connection to ethics” (2007 – 2008) as well as a member of the Ethics Committee of the German Society of Nursing Science (2010 – 2015). Previous positions include Visiting Professor at the Institute of Advanced Studies and at the Faculty of Law, University of São Paulo (2002); Visiting Professor at the University of Technology Sydney (as Feodor Lynen-Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation, 2004 – 2005); Head of the interdisciplinary BMBF (German Ministry for Science and Education) Research Group “Norm-Setting in the Modern Life Sciences” at the Institute of Science and Ethics (2006 – 2015). Spranger has published about 280 scientific articles in journals and books and authored or coauthored twelve books.
