Welcome.

Welcome to Tabor Adelaide.

Tabor Adelaide occupies a unique place in the higher education sector.

We share with the publically funded universities a striving toward academic excellence and, like the universities we can offer a range of courses, all of which are fully accredited.

In contrast to most universities, however, our smaller class sizes and overall student numbers mean that your lecturers know who you are and can take a personal interest in your academic progress. At Tabor you won’t get lost in the system! We’re big enough to provide the resources required for high quality education yet small enough to offer personal academic direction and care.

At Tabor everything is underpinned by the grace that we share in Jesus Christ. We offer a supportive environment that encourages robust academic enquiry and transformational Christian learning. Being multi-denominational means our community is enriched both by the insights that flow from the great Christian traditions and the vitality that flows from more contemporary expressions of Christian faith. It’s a great community in which to explore faith and its implications for your future profession.

We would love to hear from you. Why not give us a call?

Dr Don Owers AMPrincipal.

Ministry, Theology and Culture.

The School of Ministry, Theology and Culture is a place where Christians can explore their faith and their vocation in a dynamic environment that encourages an honest conversation between the scriptures, the church and our global cultures. Through this conversation, students gain the skills to be active and informed participants in the real conversations of life, able to wrestle with the complex opportunities that will be a part of their vocations and to contribute in new ways to the old questions that have stalemated the conversation between Christians and their neighbours.

We believe that scholarship, spirituality and service cannot exist in isolation from one another. Our subjects challenge students to explore their Christian faith, to grow in their Christian life and to prepare for a life of service wherever God calls them – whether that call be to the Market Place, the church or the Academy. The School of Ministry, Theology and Culture offers the following programs:

• VET-sector (competency based) Certificates and Diplomas in Christian Life and Ministry for those who are interested in learning and growing their ministry skills but who don’t want to do university-level study• The Bachelor of Ministry - for those called to church-based or church-allied ministry• The Bachelor of Theology - for those called to a ministry of teaching within the church or within the Academy • The Bachelor of Intercultural Studies- for those who believe that God’s call will take them into cultures outside their current experience • The Master of Arts in Christian Studies - a graduate-entry program where students can explore their interests in light of their perceived needs

• The Graduate Diploma in Ministry incorporating Graduate Certificate of Ministry - a postgraduate course providing practical training in Christian ministry and leadership• The Master of Ministry - a postgraduate course designed to extend knowledge and understanding to an advanced level in selected areas of ministry• The Doctor of Ministry incorporating Master of Ministry Studies - a postgraduate course designed to meet the continuing education needs of those in full-time Christian ministry• The Graduate Diploma in Theology incorporating Graduate Certificate in Theology - a postgraduate program that recognises the diversity of research in contemporary theology• The Master of Theology - a postgraduate program to extend knowledge and understanding to an advanced level in selected areas of theological study• The Doctor of Theology - a postgraduate research-based program that recognises the diversity of research in contemporary theology.

Our programs are flexible so that anyone, no matter their schedule, will find a convenient way to study with us. You can study on campus or through our external (online) program, part-time or full-time, in the evenings, during the day, or, through week-long intensives. Our teaching faculty are well educated, ministry experienced, passionate about their areas of study and committed to ensuring that each subject is theologically rich, ministry practical and culturally relevant. Come on and join the conversation!

Bachelor of Ministry.

Course Overview.

The Bachelor of Ministry (BMin) is an undergraduate degree that prepares students (heart, head and hand) for service in, with and on behalf of the local church and its allied ministries. The BMin has an emphasis on ministry practice and application. Students study scripture with the expectation that they will communicate it to other Christians. They study theology in order to better understand the thinking of the church but also to offer an informed critique of the life and practices of the church. They explore the past and present life and practices of the church in order to lead and form the future church. This emphasis is reflected in the core subjects, the elective choices available and the types of assessment tasks that are set.

Graduates of the BMin program will:

• know who they are before God • know how to read the scriptures • know how to think theologically • be equipped for leadership and service • know how to engage culture in light of the gospel.

The BMin is particularly suitable for those who feel called, or who are exploring their call, to some form of Christian ministry. Students may major in Pastoral Leadership (ordination studies), Church Youth Ministry, Biblical Studies, Theology, Pastoral Care, Contemporary Church Studies or Intercultural Studies.

The BMin requires completion of 25 subjects (3 years full-time or up to 12 years of part-time study). Students may exit with an Associate Degree in Ministry after completing 17 subjects or a Diploma in Ministry after completing 8 subjects. It is possible to study a BMin externally.

Bachelor of Ministry.

Prerequisites.

The BMin is not an easy course and applicants are encouraged to consider the academic, spiritual and time demands of this program. However, the benefits of attempting the BMin make facing these challenges worthwhile. Mature Age Students (over 21 years) are encouraged to apply; their life experience and personal development will greatly assist them in getting the most out of their studies. Entry is also open to those under 21 years who have a TER greater than 65 or equivalent. Students who do not feel they are ready for tertiary study or for whom a BMin is more study than they need might be interested in the VET courses on offer. For more details on VET courses, contact Tabor’s VET Manager by phoning 08 8373 8777.

Course Content.

The BMin consists of 14 core subjects and 11 electives. Depending upon which electives are chosen, a student can complete a major or a minor in Pastoral Leadership (ordination studies), Church Youth Ministry, Biblical Studies, Theology, Pastoral Care, Contemporary Church Studies or Intercultural Studies. The core subjects provide every student with a foundation in Personal Formation for Ministry, Biblical Studies, Theological Study and Ministry Skills. A distinctive feature of the Tabor Adelaide BMin is the need to participate in practical Spiritual Formation opportunities over a minimum of three semesters. This encourages students to see their BMin as not just a time of academic challenge but also a time of ongoing spiritual enrichment. For a full list of subjects see pages 12-15.

Graduate Pathways.

BMin graduates are eligible to apply for entry to a relevant postgraduate program of study at any Australian University or accredited Higher Education Provider. In some circumstances, a period of professional experience may be required for admission to these postgraduate programs. Tabor Adelaide offers postgraduate programs in Ministry and Theology. See Ministry and Theology postgraduate prospectus for more information.

Professional Outcomes.

The applied ministry focus of the BMin degree makes graduates ideally suited to leading practical ministries within the context of the church. Current graduates serve as congregational pastors, associate pastors and leaders in various church or para-church ministries. Graduates are able to apply for ordination to various denominational bodies. They will be able to teach at the VET sector level in their area of focus and, following ministry experience, are able to tutor at the introductory level of undergraduate study.

Course Overview.

The Bachelor of Theology (BTh) is an undergraduate degree that allows a person to equip themselves with a deep understanding of the scriptures and the teaching and practices of the church. The BTh has an emphasis on knowing the story and historical teaching of the church. Students study scripture with an understanding of the challenges offered by critical scholarship. They study theology knowing that many want to challenge the axioms and claims of the church. They explore the past and present life and practices of the church in order to better lead and form the future church. This emphasis is reflected in the core subjects, the elective choices available and the type of assessment tasks that are set.

Graduates of the BTh program will:

• know who they are before God• know how to study the scriptures • know how to think theologically and • be familiar with the great resources of the Christian church.

The BTh will appeal to many people who want an education in the Christian faith that is commensurate with its importance in their life. For some, this is the beginning of commitment to higher study. For others it is the platform they need to undertake a significant leadership role within the church. The BTh is particularly suited to those who feel called to a teaching ministry within the church and, depending upon the focus of their electives, to teach at the diploma level within the Academy.

The BTh requires completion of 25 subjects (3 years full-time or up to 12 years of part-time study). Students may exit with an Associate Degree in Theology after completing 17 subjects or a Diploma in Theology after completing 8 subjects.

Course Overview.

The Bachelor of Intercultural Studies (BIS) is an undergraduate degree that prepares students to live and work in contexts beyond the walls of the church in Australia and overseas. This is reflected in the emphasis on understanding the role of culture and appreciating and addressing the difficulties involved in communicating between cultures. Students study scripture with an expectation that they will communicate it to those for whom Christianity is an alien culture. They study theology in order to better understand the essence of their worldview so they can faithfully express it in various cultural contexts. They explore the past and present of the church’s engagement with cultures in order to better lead the church into sensitive engagement with those who are culturally distinct from themselves and they explore the implications of cultural anthropology and intercultural communication for praxis in order to enhance their effectiveness in intercultural settings. This emphasis is reflected in the core subjects, the elective choices available and the type of assessment tasks that are set.

Graduates of the BIS program:

• have a sound understanding of their own culture, faith and worldview, and are better able to understand and appreciate those of others • are able to relate to and work with people of other cultures, showing respect and sensitivity based on sound biblical and missiological principles.

The BIS requires completion of 25 subjects (3 years full-time or up to 12 years of part-time study). Students may exit with an Associate Degree in Intercultural Studies after completing 17 subjects or a Diploma in Intercultural Studies after completing 8 subjects.

Course Overview.

The Master of Arts in Christian Studies (MACS) and the related Graduate Diploma in Christian Studies (GDCS) are graduate entry awards that allow students to put together a program of Christian Studies that will deepen their understanding and experience of God and enhance their ability to serve God within their current vocational setting. Graduates will continue to work and minister within their vocational setting, although now with a deeper understanding of their faith and its implications for their professional calling.

Graduates of the Christian Studies program will have developed a sound knowledge and understanding of the content and use of the Bible, Christian doctrines and how the gospel relates to Christian living. They will be able to:

• express this knowledge and understanding clearly and appropriately in different situations

• extend this knowledge and understanding by formal or self-directed study

• enter into discussion on biblical theological topics on the basis of an informed understanding, and

• apply biblical and theologically informed views to personal and professional situations.

A GDCS should include at least 2 of the core subjects.

Prerequisites.

The MACS and GDCS are graduate entry awards. Students must have completed an undergraduate degree at an Australian University (or its equivalent) in order to be accepted into the Christian Studies program.

Course Content.

The MACS consists of 16 subjects; the GDCS consists of 8 subjects. In order to provide greater flexibility, the Masters of Arts in Christian Studies has been structured with only a minimum core (25%) and a maximum number of electives. To ensure that students have sufficient preparation for undertaking electives, necessary prerequisites have been identified when a subject is based upon prior learning. For a full list of subjects see pages 12-15.

Professional Outcomes.

The Master of Arts in Christian Studies (and its incorporated awards) is not intended to articulate into any other degree program. Those seeking a pathway by which to study theology or ministry should enrol in the BTh or BMin programs. Graduates of these awards will normally continue in their chosen vocations but will have the understandings and skills to integrate these with their Christian perspective and commitment. Depending on the subjects taken, a graduate might be expected to participate as a member of a church lay leadership team under the leadership of a well qualified practitioner.

Fees.

Most Tabor Adelaide students will be able to obtain a FEE-HELP loan to cover their tuition fees. This system allows students to study without having to pay any up-front course fees. FEE-HELP loan repayments are linked to an income threshold, currently $41,595 per annum, and paid back through the tax system in a similar way to HECS repayments.

Further information on FEE-HELP can be found at www.goingtouni.gov.au

Please check the Tabor Adelaide website for information regarding the fees for any given year.

Austudy/ABSTUDY/Youth Allowance is available for eligible full-time students.
