Getting Acquainted with your ATRThis (ATR) All Terrain Runabout is a very unique vehicledesigned exclusively for off-road use. It is not designed, properly equipped, or licensed to be safely operated onpublic streets and highways. This vehicle is designed tocarry two people and a limited amount of gear or cargocomfortably and safely over rough terrain that was onlyaccessible by ATV’s in the past.

Unlike ATV’s that have handlebar steering, the 4200ATRhas a steering wheel with easy handling rack-and pinionsteering. The steering’s tight turning radius makes thisvehicle more maneuverable than most ATV’s. Its fourwheeled independent suspension, large diameter hi-flotation tires and high center-frame ground clearanceadds up to excellent stability and a smooth ride over roughterrain. Outstanding two wheeled rear traction drive isachieved by using premium off-road ATV type tires intandem with the engine mounted directly over the reardifferential.

Also unlike an ATV’s one person “straddle saddle” seat, the 4200ATR sports dual high-back cushioned bucketseats with seat belts mounted in a highly styled andprotective full length body. Two passengers can ridecomfortably in this vehicle protected from splashing waterand mud. A Four-Post Accessory Bar mounted to thevehicle’s frame provides protection against low hanginglimbs and briars.

IMPORTANT: A special point of information related toits preceding topic. Land Pride’s intention is that thisinformation should be read and noted beforecontinuing.

Table of Contents

The Four-Post Accessory Bar also provides a mountingsystem for Land Pride’s optional windshields, canopy tops, and weather enclosures. It also serves as a mountingbase for Land Pride’s optional cargo racks, gun and bowracks, and back screen for transporting accessories suchas camping equipment, tree stands, hunting gear, andfishing gear. A standard receiver-type receiver hitchenables quick installation of a rear hitch for pulling smalltrailers full of supplies, tools, gear, and game.

The 4200ATR does have some similarities to an ATV.Like an ATV the 4200ATR does have a short wheelbase, narrow stance, and high center clearance all whichprovide for narrow and difficult trail access. Thiscombination of short wheelbase and narrow stance alsoenables this vehicle to be loaded in the back of most full tomid-sized pickups for transport.

The ATR has very low ground compaction and is verygentle on the ground and surrounding vegetation. Thehighly energized four wheeled independent suspensionsystem provides an incredibly soft ride and outstandingstability over difficult terrain. The engine is EPA certifiedand meets California Air Resources Board (CARB)certification standards. When you also consider the factthat it takes two ATV’s to safely haul two people that oneATR can haul, the 4200ATR is downright “EnvironmentallyFriendly”. Remember, when trying to get to that off-roadsite with or without a companion for either work orrecreation, Land Pride’s 4200ATR makes getting thereand back safely “the best part of the trip”.

Owner AssistanceThe safety video should be viewed by the owner and theWarranty Registration card should be filled out by thedealer at the time of purchase. General Operation

! DANGERAvoid injury or death from entanglement in the rotating beltline. All shields must be in place and secure when operating. Keep allpersons away from rotating driveline.

Start the ATR by following the starting proceduresdisplayed at the gearshift lever and as noted below.

1. Depress brake pedal with your foot and hold. Pullfirmly up on the park brake lever with your hand untilthe lever is tight.

2. Place gearshift in neutral. Engine will not start withvehicle in gear.

3. Apply choke fully when engine is cold.4. Turn ignition key fully clockwise and hold until engine

starts.5. Release ignition key to run position and choke to

normal operating position immediately after enginestarts.

6. Turn ignition key counterclockwise to stop engine.

Driving an ATR is as easy as driving a car with anautomatic transfer case. A simple forward and reverseshifter provides direction control. A neutral start featureand keyed 12 volt electronic ignition makes for safe andeasy starting. We have provided a manual choke controlon the console for quick cold weather starting. There is aback-up pull-rope starter mechanism on the engine just incase you accidentally leave the key on and run the batterydown. The infinitely variable torque converter drive systemmeans there is no clutching. You just shift into eitherforward or reverse when the vehicle is stopped and stepon the throttle pedal to go at speeds up to 25 mph. Nevershift while the vehicle is moving. The unit will only startwhen the shift lever is in neutral position.

Braking is accomplished by simply depressing theautomotive style brake pedal located on the floorboard. This activates the rear automotive type hydraulic drumbrakes. A lever action parking brake control is mounted onthe center console located between the operator andpassenger seats. Depress the top mounted button on thepark brake control lever to release the park brake.

Floor ControlsRefer to Figure 4-1#1 Brake Pedal: Applying pressure to the brake pedal

instead of the accelerator pedal with your foot willslow down and/or stop the vehicle. Riding or restingyour foot on the pedal unnecessary will wear thebrakes out prematurely.

Traveling Tips From the Trail MastersAt Land Pride we want you to get maximum working orrecreational enjoyment out of your utility vehicle whetheryou are using one of our All-Terrain Runabouts or one ofour terrain hugging utility trucks. If your work project orrecreational adventure is going to take you on an extendedride deep into the wilderness or way out on the prairie, you’ll need to seriously consider some of the following tipsfrom experienced pros about safety, gear, clothing, supplies, and driving techniques.

Preparation and PlanningDo a complete equipment check as follows:

1. Make sure you have plenty of fuel and oil to make thetrip and then some.

2. Make sure your tires have proper inflation, your lugbolts are tight, and that you have a spare and the toolsto change, repair, and inflate a tire. Consider adding apuncture sealant to your tires as a preventativemeasure.

3. Check for any loose or missing parts and definitelymake those needed repairs before going anywhere. Itis especially important that you check steering, braking, throttle, electrical and, engine componentsthoroughly.

Plan Your Route1. Plan your route, destination, and rendezvous points

before starting out.2. Don’t go it alone if at all possible. Taking someone

else along reduces the potential for loss of life or majorinjury to inclement weather, animal attacks, oraccidents. Besides, it’s more fun when you havesomeone to share the adventure with.

3. Obtain trail or area maps of your travel routes to andfrom your destination. Communicate your travel plansto responsible friends and or proper authorities. Planrendezvous points at conspicuous landmarks alongyour route just in case you run into unexpected troubleon the trail.

4. Make sure you take a weather radio and two-waycommunication devices such as cell phones or longrange-two way radios. It is also good to have groundflares, a flare gun, a smoke canister, emergencystrobe light, a reflecting mirror, matches for a signalfire, and a compass.

Plan Your Gear1. Plan your gear and gear up for the best and worst of

environmental conditions.2. Check the short and long range weather forecast and

take protective gear and clothing to cover allcontingencies. It doesn’t have to snow for you to fall

4200ATR Light Utility Vehicle 710-040M16

victim to hypothermia or exposure. Take or wearappropriate eye and head protection, gloves, boots, along sleeve shirt, long pants, a jacket, rain gear, drysocks, and a full change of dry clothing.

3. Pack a first aid kit, sunblocker, lip balm, insectrepellent, personal medications, water, tarp or tent, flash light, survival knife, binoculars, camera, tool kit, rope, duct tape, tow strap, winch or come-along,eating and cooking utensils, and high energy trailfood.

4. Tie and lash down your gear and supplies securely.Keep the bulk of the weight centered and mounted aslow as possible on the vehicle in order to maintain alow center of gravity for safe and stable off-road travel.

Going Out on the Trail1. When it’s time to hit the trail “take it all in” but do it

safely!2. Make sure you brief your passenger on proper safety

procedures like keeping hands, arms, feet, and otherbodily appendages inside the vehicle. Passengersshould only be transported in factory supplied seating.

3. Operator and passenger are responsible for decidingif their situation warrants using Seat Belts.

4. Avoid operating on excessively steep hills andespecially on hills that are steeper than 15 degrees.Avoid crossing slopes if possible and don’t makesharp uphill steering corrections or a rollover couldresult. If your vehicle starts to tip over on a slope turnthe front wheels quickly down hill to regain stabilityand control. The best way to climb most hills is to drivestraight up while maintaining a steady ground speedand constant engine rpm. The best way to descendmost hills is straight down while using steady pressureon the brakes without locking them up. Locking up thebrakes in a steep downhill situation can result in lossof traction, steering’ and control. When you mustcross a slope on soft terrain, keep the front wheelsturned slightly uphill and maintain a constant speedand a straight line of travel.

5. Driving too fast, being inattentive, and turning toosharply on slippery surfaces can result in rollovers andaccidents almost quicker than any other groundcondition we know of. Snow cover, wet trails, loosegravel, and frozen ground can all contribute to thisdangerous condition. In these conditions maintainsharp focus on the trail ahead. Don’t make sharp turnsand avoid the need for hard braking if at all possible. Ifyou do start to slide turn the front wheels in thedirection of the skid to regain control.

6. Avoid paved surfaces. Land pride vehicles aredesigned exclusively for off-road use only. Weunderstand that occasionally operators have to cross

7/14/08

Page 19: Table of Contents Runabout - Great Plains · The Four-Post Accessory Bar also provides a mounting ... and game. The 4200ATR does have some similarities to an ATV. Like an ATV the

Section 4 Operating Instructions

Table of Contents

public roads or right of ways to gain access to work orrecreation sites, but don’t get in the way of faster trafficand cross quickly and safely.

7. Land Pride Vehicles are capable of makingintermittent stream crossings where the depth of thewater briefly comes into contact with the bottom of thefloorboards, but you must keep these considerationsin mind. You must know how deep the water is and thestrength of the current. Cross where you have agradual incline for entry and exit and the bottom isfairly clean and free of obstacles. Maintain a slowsteady speed disturbing the stream bed as little aspossible. If you submerge the torque converter anddrive belt, you will lose forward momentum and power. If you submerge the engine or the whole vehicle, donot attempt to start the vehicle but take it to yournearest dealer immediately. After intermittent streamor shallow water stand crossings, dry out the brakelinings and CVT drive belt by slightly accelerating theengine rpm while riding the brakes momentarily untilfull drive power and braking are restored.

8. Backing up in an off-road situation might seem asimple thing to do to a novice, but having to back downa hill is a very dangerous situation. If you are on levelground always look behind you and back up slowly. Ifyou find yourself having to back down a hill, apply thebrakes very lightly. Hard braking can cause total lossof control and a rollover situation. Try to back straightdown the hill without turning. Turning in this situationcan also cause a rollover.

7/14/08

9. Whenever possible, park your vehicle on a levelsurface with the transfer case in gear, set the parkbrake, and remove the key. If you do have to park on ahillside make to sure chock the rear wheels on thedownhill side to prevent a roll away. It’s a good idea tokeep your spare key stashed separately.

10. Never operate a vehicle under the influence of drugsor alcohol. When you’re driving off-road vehicles youneed to keep your senses keen and capable of quickreaction, sharp perception, and good balance.

11. Working or recreation in the deep wilderness or on theprairies can be personally rewarding and veryenjoyable to those who truly love and understandnature and the outdoors. Good judgement, maturity, proper preparation, and planning can turn theseadventures into great experiences you’ll talk about fora lifetime. Share these adventures with young peoplewhenever you can and show them how to do it rightand how to “Tread Lightly”. Don’t let anyone under 16operate this vehicle. They just aren’t mature andexperienced enough to take on the seriousresponsibility of operating a vehicle in the off-roadenvironment without the benefit of an experiencedadult with them. Remember the only one who canprevent and avoid an accident is the operator incontrol and that’s you!

Jacking the Vehicle

! DANGERFor your safety and safety of others, a jacked vehicle must besupported properly with jack stands before working under andaround it. Also the wheels on the ground must be chocked onboth sides to prevent the vehicle from rolling forward orbackward.

1. Park vehicle on a level surface, set park brake, turnignition switch off and remove switch key.

2. Chock front and back side of the wheels not beingjacked off the ground.

3. Loosen the lug nuts on any wheel being removedapproximately 1/2 turn counterclockwise while it is stillon the ground.

4. See important note above. Place proper jack undervehicle as follows:a. Front tires: Center jack under the body frame

between the two A-Frame struts.

b. Rear tires: Center jack under the receiver hitch.

5. Jack vehicle only high enough to do the workintended.

6. Support the vehicle securely with jack stands beforeworking under or around the vehicle.

7. Work may now be performed on the vehicle. Be sureto properly torque all bolts that were loosened. Wheelbolts should be torqued after the vehicle is lowered tothe ground.

8. Lower the vehicle by first jacking the vehicle up highenough to remove the jack stands. Then carefullylower the jack until the vehicle is on the ground.

9. Remove wheel chocks.

Shock Absorber AdjustmentTraveling fast and carrying heavy loads can cause theshock absorbers to bottom-out making the ride rough andhard on the vehicle. This can be compensated for byadjusting the front and rear shock springs. Typically, theshock absorber springs are set soft for slow speeds andlight loads. Fast speeds and heavy loads require a firmersetting.

Adjust front and rear shock absorber springs as follows:

1. The shocks may be adjusted without jacking thevehicle; however, it is easier if the tire near the shockbeing adjusted is removed and the vehicle weight islifted off the shock.

2. Locate the step collar below the shock absorberspring. Notice the stepped notches in the collar andthat one of the notches rest on a pin.

3. Use a pipe wrench to rotate the step collar only whena special step collar wrench is not available.

4. Rotation direction is defined by looking down on theshocks from the top side of the vehicle.a. Rotate the step collar counterclockwise to

increases spring pressure and ride firmness.

b. Rotate the step collar clockwise to decreasespring pressure and to soften the ride.

5. Return any removed tires and lower the vehicle to theground.

Electrical SystemThe electrical system is 12 volt, 10 amp with negativeground. The electrical system is protected by a fuselocated at the battery positive post and a liquid tight self-resetting circuit breaker in the wiring harness at thestarter’s positive connection. The amp ratings are asfollows:

• Battery post fuse: - 175 Amps

• Self-resetting circuit breaker- 30 Amps

Common circuit failures are “shorts”, corroded or dirtyterminals, loose connections, defective wire insulation orbroken wires. Switches, solenoids and ignitioncomponents can also not function, causing a short or opencircuit.

Before attempting any fault diagnosis of the electricalsystem, use a test light or voltmeter to check the batteryvoltage. If the battery voltage is satisfactory, check thecleanliness and tightness of the terminals and groundconnections. A general understanding of electricalservicing and use of basic test equipment is necessary fortroubleshooting and repair.

Major overhaul or repair of the starting motor or alternatorshould be performed by trained technicians only.

BatteryRefer to Figure 6-1The battery is located behind the removable front grill.Remove grill by pressing down on the grill in the location ofthe two tabs shown. Pull back at the top and lift up.

IMPORTANT: Use a hydraulic jack, floor jack, orscissor type jack to lift the vehicle. Do not use ahandyman jack or bumper jack and don’t jack againstthe bumper, body, front 4-wheel drive transfer case, rear transmission, or axles.

Section 9 Body Repair Procedures

IntroductionLand Pride ATR Runabout bodies are constructed of ABSwith WeatherPro Gtm Color Cap. Scuffs, light scratches, and deep gouges are in most situations repairable. LandPride recommends that you use a professional body shopto restore your vehicle’s body. For your consideration, wehave provided below a list of recommended tools, materials, and steps suggested for repairing theWeatherPro Gtm Color Cap body.

Light Scuff

Required Tools and Materials (See noteabove)• 1,000 rpm buffing tool, DeWalt #849

• Meguiars buffing compound #8432

• Meguiars polish #8232 (optional)

• Meguiars maroon cutting pad #W-7006

• Meguiars tan polishing pad #W-9006 (optional)

• Meguiars backing plate #W-64

• Soft clean cotton cloths

Steps to Repair1. Clean entire area of repair. Clean water is fine for this

purpose. Do not use solvent as this will damage thebody surface.

2. Install cutting pad #7006 on buffer (maroon pad).3. Spread compound on area of repair, use about as

much as it takes to cover a half-dollar coin, this is agood starting point.

4. Set buffing tool to lowest possible speed on dial, donot buff at a high speed as this will heat and warpmaterial.

5. Buff damage area until surface scuff disappears. Asecond and third application of compound may berequired. Keep buffer moving over surface, this willhelp keep the surface cool. Clean compound residueoff surface after each buffing operation. Do notcontinue to buff compound until dry, or buff the surfacewhen dry. When all scuff marks have been buffed outthe surface may still appear a little dull, if so, proceedto #6.

NOTE: Land Pride does not supply the required tools, paint, and materials needed to repair the vehiclebody. All tools, paint, and materials should bepurchased locally.

• 3M interface sanding pad #05774

• Air Vantage finishing sander with 6-inch hook and looppad

• 3M-P800 sanding film #00970

Steps to Repair1. Clean entire area of repair. Clean water is fine for this

purpose. Do not use solvent as this will damage thebody surface.

2. Install interface-sanding pad onto finishing sander.Attach sanding film to Interface pad. (Take care incentering sanding pad and film on sander.)

3. Sand surface using about 45 P.S.I. air pressure at toolinlet, do not sand at a high pad speed, because speedcauses the sanding film to load with dust and heatsthe body surface. Proper sander pad speed is basedon cut and travel speed of pad, and downwardpressure applied by the operator. To clean sandingpad surface, run sander face at 90 degrees on theedge of a piece of cardboard. This cleaning operationwill help keep the sanding film clean and run cooler.Continue to sand surface until original scratchdamage is no longer visible. Wipe the surface with acloth then inspect to be sure the entire original scratchhas been fully sanded away (very important).

4. Install cutting pad #7006 on buffer (maroon pad).5. Spread compound #8432 on area of repair, use about

as much as it takes to cover a half-dollar coin, this is agood starting point.
