Tabernacle schools recentlygained a new superintendent.George Rafferty, who has been ineducation for 21 years, started theposition March 1 and came inready to tackle a number of is-sues. Among his priorities wasthe budget.

I was hired for the position inJanuary, but I did not start unti lMarch, Rafferty said. AroundJanuary, schools are alreadyworking on their budgets for thefollowing year. It was in my bestinterest to be involved unofficial-ly because this is the budget that Iwould be inheriting.

Rafferty, who earned his Bach-elor of Arts in Special Educationat Holy Family University inPennsylvania, began his careeras a special education teacher inthe Pennsauken Public SchoolDistrict.

After earning a Masters of Arts in school psychology atRowan University in New Jersey,he moved into guidance counsel-ing and was a school psycholo-gist. Rafferty decided he wantedto move into administration andwent on to earn a post masters de-gree in Education Specializationfrom Rowan University and a Cer-tificate of Advanced GraduateStudies in School Administra-tion.

Rafferty found that his bchallenge would be getbudget he was happy witone the taxpayers would likpass. He feels he has plished that with a budgedoes not affect the quality ocation and does not raise taxactually lowers them.

The Township Committeeadopted a budget of $3.46 millionthat would keep the current taxrate of .237 cents the same. Forthe average assessed home, thatequals about $713.40 in taxes forthe year. Although the tax ratewill remain the same, many resi-dents still voiced concerns overelements of the budget. Benefitsfor committee members were atopic of big concern for many res-dents.

What is the rationale that youtake benefits and the taxpayershave to pay them for a part-timeposition that pays $5,000 a year?resident Fran Brooks said. Idont think its reasonable thatyou can sit up there and put yourhands in our pockets for that.

Many committee membersgave various reasons as to whythey took the benefits. DeputyMayor Kenneth Baronowskipointed to a family medical situa-

tion and the lack of full-time em-ployment for his reason to takethe benefits and said that as soonas he gains full time employmenthe will give up his benefits.Mayor Kim Brown said that shetook the benefits associated withthe mayors position because itwas actually less expensive fortaxpayers because her full timeposition with the school uses aprivate insurance provider; shehas since given the benefits up.

Under new rules, CommitteeMember Stephen Lee is not ableto take benefits, and RichardFranzen said he would be givingup the benefits in the comingmonths. However, he said thatwhile some residents may notagree with committee memberstaking benefits, their committeesalaries have not increased in thepast 10 years.

There is a group of 11 high

school students from UrbanPromise Academy, known as the

UP Elite Cycling Team, that hasbeen meeting every Sunday inMarch and April, attendingchurch at Fellowship AllianceChapel in Medford. Then theycome to Tabernacle to train.

Through a generous donation,the students have been equippedwith new Fugi bikes, helmets,and jerseys.

A group of volunteers are men-toring and training these stu-dents for their upcoming 50-mileride. After the training rides, the

kids are provided lunch anlowship.

Seriously. People are talking about running for president?In April? 2011? We have to start this now? We cant get

more Charlie Sheen/lost snake coverage for at least a fewmore weeks? Just about anything is better than listening tomonths of campaign gibberish.

Politicians and other POTUSwanna-bes usually start off with a Who, me? kind of falsemodesty. Then they announcetheyre thinking about run-ning. Then they form an ex-ploratory committee. Then,like theyre giving us all some kind of early birthday present,they declare that they, after much soul-searching and at the urg-ing of millions of working men, women, children and dogs, in-deed will selflessly, albeit reluctantly and at great personal sac-rifice, toss their hat into the ring.

Oh, please. The Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primaryare months away. Why all the drama now? Yes, we know it takesa good bit of planning to run a presidential campaign. Butplease spare us the soap operas this far in advance of anyoneactually casting a vote.

Were all for spirited debate of the issues at all levels of gov-ernment. Its democracy in action. Its the way people get theirviews across, figure out which candidates to support and, in theend, with any luck, solve some problems.

Thats honest, responsible campaigning/governing. Usefulstuff. Meaningful stuff. Stuff people can sink their teeth into,but stuff that usually happens closer to when an election isabout to take place or when no election is approaching andpoliticians are doing their jobs you know, governing.

What are we going to be subjected to for the next eight or somonths from these presidential hopefuls? Announcements of staffing hires and fires? Fund-raising pleas? Photo-ops?

Heres a tip: Regular people dont care about this stuff. Atleast not now.
