The STaTe of d aC disAbilities AwAreness ChAllenge nAtionAl newsletter DD April 2017 Published around & each Jambo year Volume 3 No. 3 dAC Chair’s Message Tony Mei Jamboree dAC staff patch revealed One of the ways to thank scouts and scouters for participation or staffing an event is through the presentation of the “patch” to commemorate and record the day, weekend, or duration of the event. This symbol was adopted as the inter- national logo for Scouting for All - and was first introduced here in the states and presented to the dAC staff at the Summit Bechtel for Jamboree 2013. The original logo was on a rectangular patch; 2017 is all inclusive in a circular patch with a but- ton flap hanger. Welcome to Jamboree!! Continued on page 2 Jamboree gear preparation Both staff and administration are aware of the few months left to get all in order for this 2nd Jamboree for the dAC at the Summit. Our responsibility is to have shirts, hats, belt buckles and uniforms all in order to be ready for the BIG event plus... In under 100 days we will all be ar- riving at the Summit! Jim Africano, Charlie Mann, Andy Mann and I attended the Summit Program Leadership Action Team (SPLAT) meetings the last weekend in March and left the Summit stoked! We are in bet- ter shape than we expected (and definitely better than in 2013!) This is going to be one AWE- SOME Jamboree (and I personally am looking ahead to 2019, too, for the World Scout Jamboree at the Summit!). If you haven’t already done so, PLEASE invite a Scouter friend to join you on the DAC staff --- we still have plenty of room for more staff! We are targeted for 75 and that will make life more fun for everyone! All staff (other than four key staff members) are expected to arrive on July 15th. You will sign in at the brand new Summit visitor center (the Ruby Visitor Center) at milepost 6.0 on U.S. 19 near Buck- ley, WV. This is where everyone starts! If you haven’t already done so, NOW is the time to submit your arrival time and departure time to the Transportation Man- agement Service (TMS). This will establish a scheduled sign in time for you at the Ruby Visitor Center (see below), AND a departure time for you. Note that departure times from the Summit Center (Subcamp ECHO) equate to a shuttle bus to your car or to the airport. We won’t be able to depart on July 28th until after 1 PM (when all participants have departed.) If you came by shuttle from the Charleston, WV or Charlotte, NC airports, the shuttle will bring you to the visitor center. There you will verify your medical approval and your YPT. NOTE: make sure you have submitted your AHMR (medical form) as soon as possible before April 19th! If you have an approved AHMR before April 19th you will be clear. If you don’t have that clear, you should bring a copy of your completed physi- cal and ready to input the medical history data online at the visitor PERSONAL GEAR: Rain gear Toilet kit Pad and Pencil Flashlight B esides an attitude for having fun and adventure, for discovery and sharing, for fellowship and learning, the following list is offered to help in planning this two week camping experience. Remember that only what can fit in one duffle bag plus sleeping bag and chair is permitted at Jambo: Uniforms Pair of jeans Sweatshirt with hood/hat Extra shoes/socks Fishing pole Sleeping bag or three blankets Pack or bag to carry items Canteens/water flask Sunscreen Hat, Sun glasses Look for a more complete list in the Jamboree 2017 staff catalog

Individual staff questionairre of talent for the dAC program

I am there from July 15-22. I don’t get a day off when I travel with my troop to summer camp or work with the Order of the Arrow. 1. Merit Badge Counselors for dAC? Answer: I love to learn to be a merit badge for disability awareness so I can use the skills in my troop, district, and council. I believe I will be coordinating a disability awareness camporee, University of Scouting skill, or another function, when I return. I can prepare to be a merit badge counselor in the field. I have serve in other fields such as STEM. If you need me to become one, I will.2. Member of an Eagle board of review committee to expand Tent of Possibilities area? Answer: Yes. I am an Eagle Board of Review for a number of scouts this year.3. Presentation skills or lack, thereof? Answer: It depends on the subject. I am a District/ Unit STEM Coordinator. 4. Mental block or uncomfortable with certain areas? Basketball, Beep Ball, Trust Run, etc? Answer: Frankly I do not know. I think I work in some of the areas in 2001. I do not think we had a wheelchair basketball for the scouts during that year. I am there to serve as needed. 5. Do you have additional responsibilities at Jamboree? Answer: No I do not. I turn down extra responsibilities so I can help dAC. 6. Willingness to volunteer extra hours to continue open program venues (see “Mathematics” page 3 for explanation). Answer: I am there to serve. I need a great tent mate. 7. Artist (freehand signs, etc.), carpenter (Assembly and maintenance of several venues), Graphic Artist to continue the dAC tradition, etc.? Answer: I am not very good artist. My son thinks I can draw. I am there to help. I do not mind being someone’s apprentice.8. Facility with signing (American Sign Language). Answer: Sorry, I am not. I am reaching out to my council to see if there are any scouting alumni at Gallaudet University, the university is devoted to deaf and blind students.I was thin in 2001. I am no longer thin. I need to lose some pounds. I am working out to get in better shape. I am there to serve as needed. I will need more information regarding the parking vehicles and stuff. I have never been to the Summit. I orginally thought I had to serve from July 12-22. I get to promote scouting and my council at another event. I am needed by the staff, I can stay an extra day or two days. I just need to discuss with my family especially my spouse and inform my employer in advance.
