To the Classic Motorcycle Restorer and Enthusiast:

The first Hanford Rally (as it was previously known) was held in 1968 in downtown Hanford, in the town square. After outgrowing its first location, a move to the Tulare Fairgrounds was the next home for the ‘Hanford Rally’. Still growing, the event spent a short stint at the Ag center before moving to its present location, the Kings Fair Grounds on 10th Avenue in Hanford just southeast of its original location. Glenn & Deni Bator of Bator International, the third promoters in its first 40 years (after having done a great job for some 8 years) passed the responsibility of California's longest running Motorcycle Show & Swap, as it is now known, on to Marshall & Nancy Baker. We at Classic Cycle Events are proud to celebrate our 5th Anniversary as current promoters of the 45th Annual Hanford Motorcycle Show and Swap as well as the 38th Annual El Camino Show and Swap. The La Mirada Drive-In was the first home of the El Camino Show & Swap. With a move to the El Camino Community College parking lot, the event grew to become California's Largest Motorcycle Show & Swap. In 2012 with the college parking lot in need of repairs and the event having outgrown its 30 year home, moved to Irwindale Raceway. Classic Cycle Events is happy to be connected with both of California's oldest and largest vintage Motorcycle Show & Swaps.

In order to maintain proper judging procedures, the American Motorcycle Association (AMA) judging standards were initially used as a basis for judging in all categories by Classic Cycle Events (CCE). Eventually the AMA judging standards became more detailed and arguably more cumbersome. Meanwhile CCE judging guidelines have remained simpler and less restrictive.

To address the concerns of both judge and competitor alike, we have determined to prepare a Judging Handbook that will attempt to clarify standards at CCE motorcycle shows as well as preserve the authenticity and accuracy of motorcycle restoration in our hobby. This handbook defines the role of the Show Judge, their qualifications and judging procedures used in CCE motorcycle shows. It is the hope of CCE that this handbook will assist in guiding the judge as well as the restorer in his restoration project and thus maintain and preserve originality, authenticity and historical accuracy for generations to come.

Sincerely,

Classic Cycle Events Show Committee

Judge Qualifications

To qualify as a CCE Show Judge the following criteria should be met:

1. Active membership in AMA or other equal organization endorsing valid and proper restoration of classic, vintage and antique motorcycles.

2. Ownership of a motorcycle or participation in motorcycle restoration is not required to become a show judge. Nevertheless, these two matters lend themselves toward a better understanding of judging and the complications faced by many restorers.

3. The ability to be fair, honest, understanding and impartial when evaluating a motorcycle.

Judges Code of Ethics

Classic Cycle Events judges are experienced and knowledgeable volunteers often doing a thankless job yet remaining open minded and focused on fair and impartial judging. CCE prides itself in promoting the passion and love of motorcycle restoration including attention to originality and authenticity of motorcycles entered in show competition. CCE also promotes elegance and special character of modified and custom motorcycles through several classes of show competition.

Every entrant has committed time, talent and funds in preparing a motorcycle for show competition and deserves the respect of such sacrifice. Each entrant needs to be treated equally and fairly. To that end, it is extremely important that each entry receive a fair and thorough evaluation free of judge’s conflicts of interest.

A judge will not be assigned to evaluate a class wherein he or she is involved under the following circumstances:

1. Ownership or partial ownership of the motorcycle entry. 2. Recent or direct involvement in the restoration of the entry, paid or

unpaid, including actual work or supervised guidance. 3. Recent consultation on motorcycle entered on a paid basis. (Minimal

advice or consultation on an unpaid basis will generally be allowed) 4. Extensive provision of parts in the line of doing business. (This does not

include the hobbyist)

Judging Standards & Guidelines

CCE show judging is based on the traditional method of team judging where each entry is judged by a team or panel of show judges (2 or more) deducting points from a 100 point total. The motorcycle with the fewest deductions (highest point total) is considered to be the best within that show class or category and awarded accordingly.

Judges access the entry as a team with one Show Judge acting as Lead Judge of the Class Judging Team. Each Judging Team prepares a score sheet recording issues and deductions. These score sheets are then turned in to the Head Judge for tabulation and recorded on the master judging sheet. The Head Judge then determines awards according to these judges score sheets. A copy of the judges score sheet is then handed to entrant or placed on the entrant’s motorcycle.

CCE is not a beauty contest but entries are expected to be presentable and restored as close to original as possible. Some signs of wear are expected. ‘Over-restoration’ isn’t always good and may result in point deduction. Motorcycles are meant to be ridden!

Each motorcycle entered in competition is expected to be complete and fully operational, but not mandatory. Entrants may be requested to demonstrate the operability of a motorcycle entered. Judges prefer to have the owner or other authorized person available when motorcycles are being judged to answer questions and give insight into restoration issues.

Having a restored motorcycle judged should be a fun and rewarding experience. A Show Judge is getting up close and personal with some of the best restored motorcycles anywhere and shares the enthusiasm of the motorcycle restorer.

To have a rewarding experience and help the judging process go well, these guidelines should be followed:

1. The judge’s decision is final

2. Judging standards are taught at judging clinics through the AMA and other reputable organizations. These clinics help us better understand the issues of show judging.

3. Never complain, never over explain.

Scoring

At the beginning of the adjudication process, each entry is assumed to be a 100 point motorcycle. As each component of the restored motorcycle is judged, points are deducted as appropriate. Comments may be documented on the score sheet to assist judges; this also provides insight to the entrant regarding the adjudication of their entry. Custom motorcycles will be reviewed with an eye on original ideas and uniqueness.

Sample Score Sheet

A copy of the judges score sheet is provided to entrant upon completion of adjudication. A wheel card is supplied at check in and should be placed under the front wheel to identify Entrant, Model, Class and Year of motorcycle to be judged. (See sample on page 3)

Judging Decorum

It is the objective of the CCE Show Committee to field the best judging team possible for all of our motorcycle shows. To that end, it is essential that all judges conduct themselves to the highest degree possible and follow these simple decorum guidelines.

A Lead Judge heads each judging team and is responsible for making initial contact with each entrant, final class assignments and submission of judging results.

Each Lead Judge should cast a ballot for Best Restoration and Best of Show. A committee of Lead Judges will gather together immediately following submission of their assigned class results to determine Best Restoration and Best of Show motorcycles. This responsibility cannot be assigned to another show judge without the express permission of the Head/Chief Judge.

The Chief Judge is responsible for coordination with all judging teams and lead judges. Clarification points may be discussed with members of other judging teams where needed. This should not interfere with class judging.

The Head/Chief Judge should be in the judging area at all times during judging to answer questions and address judging concerns. If he/she is not available, concerns should be reported to the CCE booth.

Entrants should be questioned if their motorcycle has any unique or complicated original equipment features and any related documentation. This will assist judges in meeting judging criteria.

Each class entry is to be judged in the same manner. The judging team is responsible for watching the clock to assure that each entrant receives equal time and coverage.

Judged entries will need to be touched or handled during the judging process. Consent is expressed by virtue of the motorcycle being entered in show competition. The owner or owner designee may be required to demonstrate proper function of components during judging. Ultimate care should be practiced with regard to clothing zippers, belt buckles, etc.

Each judge on the judging team should concentrate on judging. Interruptions and distractions should be avoided so that proper judging can be maintained. Visiting should be held to discussion of the judged motorcycle.

It is recommended that the judging team confer among themselves before moving on to the next entrant to be certain of scoring agreement. This should be done privately and not over-heard by entrants or other visitors. Results should be kept confidential until awards presentation.

All show judges represent Classic Cycle Events and should conduct themselves in a professional and pleasing manner. Judges should wear appropriate identification during judging supplied by the CCE Judging Committee.

Show Class Assignment

Each motorcycle entered in the CCE show is assigned to a specific classification. Each entrant should be aware that some motorcycles may be eligible for more than one class and a determination is to be made as to which class it should be entered in. Entries cannot be entered in more than one class.

Class Choice

The show entrant of record chooses which class they wish to compete in. This decision must be made when registering the motorcycle for the show. Classes may be added or removed at the discretion of the Show committee. Motorcycles may be moved to another more appropriate class at the discretion of the Head/Chief Judge.
