Fine ArtArt should be viewed both as a form of communication and a means of expressing your ideas and feelings. We aim to provide you with opportunities to develop personal expression as we encourage observation and analysis, imagination, experimentation, sensitivity, conceptual thinking and practical skills.

Graphic CommunicationGraphic designers combine text and image to communicate information and ideas. A designer will often work to a brief from a client who needs their product to be promoted or packaged, so a designer needs to be aware of the target audience for their designs. You will have the opportunity to work in one or more of the following areas: Advertising and packaging, illustration, typography, computer graphics and animation.

The Xaverian Art and Design department is a forward thinking, challenging, rewarding and friendly place to be. We are one of the largest A level providers nationally- you have the choice to study Fine Art, Graphics, Photography, Textiles and after A level, Art Foundation.

All our staff are practising artists and use their talents and passion in developing the artists of the future. Classes take place in the stunning Ward Hall development where student creativity and artistic buzz can be seen and felt everywhere.

Our students are highly valued by major universities all around the UK, from Glasgow School of Art, the London Schools and right down to Falmouth on the very south coast. Indeed, very recently we were approached by and have agreed a formal partnership with UCA (University of the Creative Arts) which will be of much benefit to our students. We have many visits to the college by universities and have excellent links with the Whitworth and Manchester Art Gallery.

Our ethos is to not only develop your skills and techniques but also your ability to think and act creatively. We want you to explore personal ideas and experiment with many techniques and processes. You will be encouraged to drop in an out of the art rooms to work in your independent time. Staff will always be around to offer you guidance and help. You are expected to work in your own time and to take an ownership and responsibility for your work. This typified in our end of year exhibition in June where the hundreds of visitors every year are constantly amazed at the talents of our students. For us, the study of Art is a fascinating and exciting adventure.

Felicity arrived at Xaverian from Saddleworth School with a highly impressive set of GCSE results including A* grades in Art and Graphic Products. It was obvious immediately that Felicity not only had serious talent for these subjects but also an unending passion for everything of a creative nature. A true artist, avid reader and an intelligent designer the projects she produced over the two year Graphic Communication A level were flawless and demonstrated technical skill of both a handmade and digital nature. Her distinctly personal contemporary illustrations dominated the projects she produced, the quality matching anything currently produced by professional creatives. Emma Haslam - Newall Green High School

Emma successfully completed her Art, Photography and Textile A Levels and has progressed on to the Xaverian Art Foundation course. Whilst at Xaverian, Emma had the incredibly challenging task of undertaking 3 A level Art subjects. Emma worked tirelessly all year on her extensive coursework portfolios which were concluded with a mammoth 45hrs of exams. Emma’s diligent attitude and hard work finally resulted in her achieving A grades in all 3 subjects.

Louis Cavill - Bramhall High School

Louis has secured a place at Sheffield Hallam University studying Graphic Design. Louis transferred on to photography in September 2017 to undertake the daunting challenge of completing an A level in one year. Studying the photography A level in one year is a very demanding proposition, which meant Louis had to simultaneously attend both year 1 and 2 classes each week. Initially Louis found the workload and amount of new skills to learn somewhat overwhelming. However, as the year progressed Louis’s confidence and work flourished and he finally successfully finished the course with a well-deserved B grade.

TEXTILES 10 Georgia Wright - Trinity CE High School

Georgia was a very creative and inventive student. Her particular area of interest at Xaverian was in knit. But within this very traditional textiles technique she really pushed the boundaries. In her series of knitted, non-functional vessels she used ribbons of denim and also knitted with the loose fibres collected from the ripped fabric by ‘spinning’ it together with her fingers first. Pieces from this collection were selected to be part of a special student exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery, a prestigious accolade as not many students were chosen from a wide range of students from the North West. Georgia achieved a B in Textiles and went on to study an HND in Fashion and Textiles at Manchester College where she had a placement with Pam Hogg as part of London Fashion Week and was a finalist for the Frankfurt Style Awards. Georgia currently works as a textiles studio assistant at ‘Countess Ablaze’ in Manchester’s Northern Quarter as she waits to complete her final degree year at Huddersfield University.

Holly Harries - Trinity CE High School

Holly was an incredibly hard-working, self-motivated student. She always had very clear intentions for her projects and was never afraid of pushing boundaries and seeing through board, conceptual projects. Her project based on research into the Japanese kimonos gained her a place on the Fashion Degree course at the University of Salford. Within her first year she had organised an independent fashion show at Victoria Baths called “The White Element” with VIP guests, DJ and models. In her second year she gained a placement in Japan and finally left University with a 1st. The future now holds a fashion placement in London.
