SXSW 2006 FILM CONFERENCE

Saturday Panels Include: 11 :00 AM-12:00 PM

CONVERSATION WITH PETER BART Bart has been the editor-in-chief of Variety since 1989. In the late

1960s and early 1970s, he was an integral part of Paramount Pictures,

when the studio revolutionized the film industry with groundbreaking

releases such as The Godfather, Harold and Maude, Rosemary's Baby,

and Paper Moon. He also published seven popular books on a wide

variety of issues related to the film business. Most recently, he's begun

co-hosting the movie talk show, Sunday Morning Shootout. Join us, as

Bart discusses his wide range of film experiences, and the state of the

industry as he sees it.

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

DVDS VS. THEATERS Film exhibition goes through new trends and new technology since its

inception. But, recently, a new debate has got all of the film business

talking. It's the tug-of-war between the DVD industry and the theater

industry. Members of both industries, and everything in-between, will

meet and chat about the past, present, and future of this sea change

and what it will mean for the way films are made.

3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

SHOOTING DOCS Guerilla filmmaking or the $100 million box office club? Documentaries

are now straddling both worlds, but how did they get there, and how

long will it last? Whether you'd like to be behind the camera, in front

of the screen, or signing the checks, let these insiders take you on a

tour of the doc universe.

Sunday Panels Include: 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

CHOOSING MUSIC FOR FILM: THE CREATIVE PROCESS The roundtable will focus on the process of finding the right music for your

film from both an artistic and budgetary perspective. Industry profession

als will explore the relationship between the composer and director, the

role of score versus songs and the process of song clearance.

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

CONVERSATION WITH HENRY ROLLINS Musician, author, actor, iconoclast, stand up/spoken word performer

and host of IFC series" The Henry Rollins Show," Henry Rollins will

join us for a special, candid discussion. R~~M!ill sit down for a one

on-one chat with journalist Andy Langer ( J. to address his feel

ings on the current state of the media, pop culture, politics, education,

and all the ties that bind them.

3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

DOC DISTRIBUTION: BROADBAND VS. TV VS. THEATRICAL This is where the age'of new technology and new documentary film

making collides. Now, you can stream short documentaries over the

Web. Is that a better outlet than TV? What does that mean for theatri

cal distribution? Finding a home for your docu~ntary is an important

issue, and the crux of this discussion.

Monday Panels Include: 11 :30 AM - 12:30 PM

THE FUTURE OF DARKNETS: CAN HOLLYWOOD SEE THE LIGHT? Darknet pioneers and representatives from the movie and music

industries square off over the new realities of digital distribution over

private spaces online.

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

GETTING TO KNOW THE GUILDS They are a very big part of the mainstream film business, and there is

a lot of information about them everyone should know. It's the Guilds:

Directors Guild of America, Screen Actors Guild, and the Writers Guild

of America. Representatives of each will come together at SXSW for

a session to explain and discuss the different services they offer both

veteran and novice filmmakers.

3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

BLOGGING ABOUT FILM Not only are film blogs becoming one of the most-read sources for

online movie news/reviews, but now many established print outlets

have begun their own 'Hogs sections." Some of the film world's most

clicked bloggers plan to give you the inside scoop about how this new

form of journalism has shaped itself within the traditional sphere of

entertainment reporting.

Tuesday Panels Include: 11 :00 AM- 12:00PM

10 YEARS OF "AINT IT COOL:' In 1996, Austin native Harry Knowles launched a Web site that for

ever changed the polished face of Hollywood. "Ain't It Cool News" has

evolved over its first decade into a mini-empire, offering early film

reviews, trailers, news, and more. Meanwhile, both filmmakers and

studio execs have changed much of their routine because of the revo

lution that has begun online, due to Knowles. Now, 10 years in, how

has the journey treated its pioneers and how do they plan to stir things

up through the second decade?

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

SMALL SCREEN DISTRIBUTION Straight-to-video? Web Distribution? Made-for-TV? It's all part of distri

bution, and guess what... it's becoming a very profitable and logical deci

sion for filmmakers today. Experts of this world join to chart new paths

and discuss new trends in the world of non-theatrical exhibition.

3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

THE DOCUMENTARY BEAT The world of documentary filmmaking has found a friendly bedfellow

with the world of music. It's gone beyond mere "trends," and become

a bonafide industry of itself. The genre of "music documentaries" has

witnessed highs and lows over the last few decades, and to speak

about its current high riding, will be filmmakers with some of the hot

test music docs on the festival circuit today.
