INTRODUCING THE SOUTHERN CROSS SOLOISTSAn internationally successful ensemble based in Brisbane, the Southern Cross Soloists have helped set the benchmark for Australian chamber music since 1995. The Soloists have earned a well-deserved reputation for artistic excellence and continue to surprise and delight audiences with their constantly evolving repertoire and ever-changing annual programs.

An ensemble of individually talented and collectively powerful musicians, the Soloists come together to create something special and very much ‘in the moment’ each time they perform. The informal, ‘up-close-and-personal’ performance style perfected by the Soloists creates an intimate, inviting and deeply engaging experience.

Company in residence at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre for five years, the Soloists enjoy a busy schedule of national performances, while continuing to develop Australian chamber music talent through the award-winning Winter Music School regional education program. Their international touring has taken the ensemble through the Asia-Pacific and into North America.

Added to the Soloists’ annual program of flagship events – including the esteemed Bangalow Music Festival – the ensemble seeks to incorporate new and innovative work every season. Special guest musicians, unique cross-art form collaborations and a fluid repertoire are key elements in the Soloists’ perpetually fresh and inventive programs.

As Patron of the Southern Cross Soloists, I have witnessed the ensemble’s impressive artistic growth and dynamic evolution across the years. As an audience member, I have experienced first-hand the Soloist’s transfixing performance style and uniquely engaging delivery. It is from both these perspectives that I am once again looking forward to another stellar season.

The Soloists have succeeded in striking a consistent and careful balance between broad audience appeal and artistic excellence. It is this ability to respond and adapt, while stretching and extending their musical abilities, that keeps the ensemble at the forefront of their craft and a perennial favourite among loyal subscribers and new audiences alike.

Our Soloists are a much-love local talent in their home state, Queensland, an equally lauded fixture on the national stage, and a highly-regarded international export. In this latter role, they continue to put the spotlight firmly on Australian chamber music and the depth and breadth of our country’s significiant creative capabilities.

OUR JOURNEYLeaving Brisbane in 1988 to live in the big smoke of London, I was sad that it wasn’t possible to have it all. That is, to live in a beautiful place like Brisbane but still be able to experience daily the vibrant, inspiring arts scene of a European capital city. Little did I know that this would be completely possible – if I just waited 20 years or so!

No need to live in a dingy London flat eating tomato soup just so I could hear a jaw-dropping virtuoso or feel the thrill of experiencing cutting-edge, world-class performers.

Brisbane has not only grown up but is bursting at the seams with arts and live performance. As a musician this makes it one heck of a great place to live!

This is our vision for the Southern Cross Soloists: to offer world-class chamber music in the heart of Brisbane, bringing excellence to our city, state and country. But in true Aussie fashion, we do it ‘our way’ and in true SxS signature style.

Fresh, innovative programmes, larrikin banter with the audience, captivating audiences with up-close and personal performances in first-class venues with exhilarating guest soloists – that’s what sets us apart. It’s the X factor, chamber-music style.

In 2014 expect to share more of this thrilling journey with us. From our annual pilgrimage to the Bangalow Festival to the intimate setting of our concert series at QPAC, there will be something for everyone, delivered in a relaxed, inviting style.

We present Bangalow favourites this time at QPAC, including international guest soloists: tenor Alexander Lewis and violin virtuoso Ilya Konovalov. James Crabb will charm as ‘pied piper meets classical accordion’, and actors from the Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble will delight with their deliciously naughty commentary by Shakespeare on the human condition called ‘love’.

New friendships will be formed with Southern Cross Soloists appearing for the first time with Expressions Dance Company on stage in Natalie Weir’s new ballet, The Red Shoes in July, while young aspiring musicians from all over Queensland will descend on Rockhampton to start taking a journey of their own at the Southern Cross Soloists Winter Music School. We will also be touring with concerts in Redlands, Sydney and Toowoomba, plus Bangalow and the Northern NSW region.

So as I look out my window to sunny and fun-loving Brisbane, I am appreciative that we can live in the most beautiful city in the world and have exciting music and arts at our fingertips. Some of you (our audience) have been coming to our performances for nearly 20 years, while others came for the first time in 2013 and were immediately hooked…

The 2014 season !nds inspiration in many of the most scandalous legends of literature, real and imaginary: Shakespeare, Faust and Til Eulenspiegel. Australian tenor Alexander Lewis is a graduate of The Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. Alexander was featured in the Met’s Summer Parks Concert Series and also appeared in LYADP productions as Vasek in The Bartered Bride, conducted by Maestro James Levine, and Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte, conducted by Maestro Alan Gilbert.

A graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Alexander has numerous musical theatre credits including George in Sunday in the Park with George for the Victorian Opera Company, Anthony in Sweeney Todd for Opera Australia and Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera.

Rob Pensal!ni, Artistic Director of the Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble (QSE) is an actor, director, musician and a teacher of voice, acting and linguistics. He received a PhD in theoretical linguistics from MIT in 1997, and has taught and published in the field of linguistics through the Universities of Chicago and Queensland. Rob is currently lecturer in linguistics and drama at the University of Queensland and a junior text teacher at Shakespeare and Company (Massachusetts).

One of the founders of QSE, Rob directed the company’s first full production, As You Like It. In 2003 he played the title character in Coriolanus and in 2005, directed The Comedy of Errors to critical acclaim. Other Shakespeare roles include Prospero in The Tempest, Hubert in King John, Feste in Twelfth Night and Launce in Two Gentlemen of Verona.

‘VIRTUOSO’Violin virtuoso Ilya Konovalov has wowed audiences at Bangalow with his luscious sound, consummate artistry and dynamic virtuosity. We are pleased to invite him for the first time to be our guest soloist at QPAC. The centrepiece of this concert is inspired by literary legend Faust in Weiniawski’s Faust Fantasy, plus other works performed with the popular international violin virtuoso and first concertmaster of the Israel Philharmonic. Enjoy the world premiere of a new piece written especially for the Southern Cross Soloists by leading Australian jazz/classical composer Mark Isaacs.

Ilya Konovalov was born into a musical family in Novosibirsk (USSR) in 1977 and studied with famed teachers Professor Zakhar Bron and Professor Dora Schwarzberg at the Vienna Academy of Music. A prizewinner at the Wieniawski International Violin Competition, Ilya has performed all over the world as a soloist, chamber musician and Concertmaster with the London Symphony Orchestra and Kirov Orchestra under Valery Gergiev.

Since 1997, Ilya has been the chief Concertmaster of the Israel Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta and the first violinist of the Israel Philharmonic String Quartet. Ilya regularly appears as a soloist and chamber musician at festivals round the world including Young Artists in Concert in Davos Switzerland, Schubertiaden Music Festival in Germany, Haifa Music Festival, Dreiklang Festival in Gemany, Verbier Festival Switzerland and the Bangalow Music Festival in Australia.

‘TRAVELS OF A TRICKSTER’

Scottish born James Crabb is one of the world’s leading ambassadors of the classical accordion. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he subsequently held a professorship for 15 years and was also a guest professor at the University of Music and Dramatic Arts in Graz, Austria.

Recent highlights include conducting and performing in Victorian Opera’s production of Maria de Buenos Aires (Piazzolla), Stravinsky’s Petrushka with the Tero Saarinen Dance Company in Europe and Asia, Gubaidulina’s 7 Words with the BBC Symphony, a Victorian tour with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, performances at the Peasmarsh Festival, England, with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra and Brett Dean in a new Accordion/Viola duo presentation and a collaboration with Opera Queensland on a new project entitled Abandon, based on the music of Handel.

QPAC PRESENTS

Music that follows the travels and misadventures of German Folklore hero, Til Eulenspiegel, through Germany, Italy and Bohemia. In this lighthearted tale, Til Eulenspiegel’s rogue pranks and mischief-making see his life start from an innocent ‘once upon a time’ through to his end in the gallows.

For the first time, the Southern Cross Soloists will collaborate with internationally renowned classical accordion player, James Crabb, in this program of adventures from around the world.

A strong belief in music education underpins all Southern Cross Soloists activities. No event characterises the company’s passion for education more than the Southern Cross Soloists Winter Music School held annually in Rockhampton Queensland. Winner of the 2009 APRA/Australian Music Centre Classical Music Award for its ‘Contribution to Australian Music in Education’, the school enables students from across regional Queensland to work with some of Australia’s finest classical music pedagogues. The school provides students with an opportunity to experience the standards required to pursue a career in music. Past students now hold places in professional orchestras, leading tertiary music institutions and the Australian Youth Orchestra.

Paul Dean CLARINETClarinetist and Artistic Director Laureate Paul Dean is the Artistic Director of the Australian National Academy of Music and is in much

demand as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player. He regularly appears at both Australian and international music festivals and has appeared as a soloist with most of the major orchestras and chamber ensembles in Australia.

Margaret Schindler SOPRANOLyric soprano Margaret Schindler, a Senior Lecturer at Queensland Conservatorium

Griffith University, is a nationally recognised teacher who is also in great demand as a recitalist, particularly for her performances of Baroque and contemporary repertoire. Margaret has appeared as a soloist with orchestras in Australia and Europe.

Patrick Murphy CELLOCellist Patrick Murphy is Cello Performance Fellow at the University of Queensland School of Music. Prior to this

he was Lecturer in Cello at the University of Tasmania, Hobart Conservatorium. Patrick was a founding member of the Tankstream Quartet which toured internationally after winning first prize in the 2002 Osaka International Chamber Music Competition, Japan.

Tania Frazer OBOE Creative Director Tania Frazer, formerly Principal Oboe with the Israel Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, enjoys a

busy career as a soloist and teacher. A recipient of numerous prizes and awards, Tania won first prize at the Coleman International Competition in Los Angeles, the Queen Elizabeth Silver Jubilee Award in London and has appeared in orchestras all over the world under conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Valery Gergiev, Lorin Maazel, Christoph Eschenbach, Neemi Järvi and Sir Neville Marriner.

Kevin Power PIANOKevin Power OAM pursues a busy freelance career as a pianist, performing regularly as a soloist, accompanist and chamber musician.

He was formerly on the staff of the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University and is the Musical Director and Chorus Master of The Queensland Choir.

Emma Sholl FLUTE Guest Associate Artist 2014

Emma Sholl is regarded as one of Australia’s finest flautists. Described as

having a “gorgeous honeyed tone” (Sydney Morning Herald), Emma has led a successful and varied career as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician.

Associate Principal Flute with the Sydney Symphony, Emma has worked with some of the world’s finest conductors, touring throughout Europe and Asia. In demand as a chamber musician and soloist, Emma has performed in many festivals and as a soloist with the Adelaide, Tasmanian and Sydney Symphony Orchestras.

Alan Smith VIOLINOn his return to Australia after extensive European study, violinist Alan Smith joined the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra as

Associate Concertmaster and was later appointed as their Concertmaster. Alan became Concertmaster of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in 1995. He also is a violin lecturer at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University and often performs as a soloist throughout Australia.

Peter Luff HORNOn sabbatical for 2014

Horn player Peter Luff is Senior Lecturer at the Queensland Conservatorium

Griffith University, as well as Associate Principal Horn with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. He is highly regarded as a player and teacher throughout Australia while also developing a successful career as a conductor. Peter performed in the inaugural Australian World Orchestra concert in 2011 and is a regular guest lecturer at the Australian National Academy of Music.

‘Friends of SxS Commissioning Fund’ is a major new partnership between the Soloists and our donors to commission new works by Australian composers to be premiered in the coming season.

The fund will pool donations of all amounts towards a specific piece of music. Each donor will receive personal recognition in the commission note on the published score and at the world premiere performance in the program and other benefits listed.

The new fund gives donors the opportunity to experience the joy of being an integral part of the creation of a new work of art and a sense of communal ownership of the piece of music.

Generally a new composition costs around $10,000 – no small sum. However, the largest portion of the money goes directly to the composer. By supporting the fund you are directly supporting an artist and contributing to new music in the Australian cultural landscape.

GENERAL TICKETING INFORMATIONPackage bookings received over the phone or online are processed immediately. Package bookings received via post are processed in order of receipt. Please allow a minimum of four weeks for receipt of your tickets.

A transaction fee of $6.20 will be charged per transaction.

All sales are !nal. Refunds are not available once a booking application has been processed. For package bookers, exchanges into another concert in the 2014 series can be made up to 24 hours prior to the concert that the subscriber no longer wishes to attend. Please call 136 246 to arrange an exchange. A $3.40 fee applies per exchange.

Single tickets for each concert are available from Tuesday 28 January by calling 136 246 or visiting qpac.com.au. A transaction fee applies to single ticket sales. Patrons are able to purchase additional single tickets when purchasing a package. Please indicate requirements when booking.

Wheelchair and disability access is available at all performances. Please advise when booking if required.
