Apprentice schemecash boost to create52,000 new placesTODAY’S confirmation of £144m EU and Welsh Govern-ment investment to fund morethan 50,000 apprenticeships inWest Wales and the Valleys overthe next four years has beenwelcomed by the organisationrepresenting the nation’s train-

ing providers.The Welsh Government says theinvestment will fund 52,000 ap-prenticeships, with the majorityof places targeted at 16-24 yearolds in construction, engineering,IT and retail.

Each apprentice will have theopportunity to study qualifica-tions from foundation level toadvanced level.

First minister Carwyn Jonesalso revealed that the WelshGovernment would be announc-

ing “further investment in otheraspects of our apprenticeshipprogramme in the comingweeks”.

The National Training Federa-tion Wales, a network of morethan 100 quality assured work-based learning providers with

links to 35,000 employers acrossWales, welcomed the announce-ment but stressed that theinvestment was confirmation of a budgeted commitment by theWelsh Government rather thannew money.

Jeff Protheroe, the NTfW’s op-erations manager, said: “We aredelighted with the first minister’sannouncement which confirmsthe Welsh Government’s recentbudget commitment to supportapprenticeships in West Wales

and the Valleys, which our mem-bers are already busy delivering.

“We look forward to an earlyannouncement regarding ap-prenticeship provision in the restof Wales, particularly as demandcontinues to grow across all sec-tors and regions.

“This news confirms the impor-tance of apprenticeship trainingto the economy of Wales.

“We are proud that Wales hasthe best record in the UK fordelivering high quality appren-ticeships.

“The NTfW looks forward tocontinuing to support provid-ers, employers, learners and theWelsh Government in deliveringapprenticeships and growingcapacity to meet the needs of Wales.”
