Transport & Health

Active travel

Active travel refers to all modes of travelling involving cycling and

walking as main modes of transport

Why active travel?

The health benefits are huge!

(also when translated into economic terms)

The health benefits far outweigh the risks

(accidents, increased exposure to air pollution,…)

Other benefits too: air pollution, noise pollution, economic, climate

change, quality of life, attractiveness of urban space, etc.

Help on the path towards sustainable mobility

Transport & Health

Useful to know: WHO HEAT tool

Translates into monetary value

Barrier for local authorities:

investing institution (transport departments)

≠ benefitting institution (health departments)

shared budgets needed due to cost-benefit-flow

travel is maximised in all relevant European policies and programmes

Recommendations incl.:

Define a leader on active travel and health in the European Commission

Consult stakeholders from the health, environment and transport sectors

Initiatives on the internalisation of external costs in transport should include all

health costs, including physical inactivity

Include economic dimension of active mobility in urban transport plans and policies

European funding activities to secure the benefits of active travel in Europe

Three levels of cycling:

STARTER CITIES:

modal share of cycling <5%

GOAL: make cycling possible/comfortable, safe

CLIMBER CITIES:

modal share of cycling 5 – 20%

GOAL: convince more people to use the bicycle

CHAMPION CITIES:

modal share of cycling >20%

GOAL: keep people cycling
