Executive Summary

This report contains a detailed statistical analysis of the results to the survey titled MATH 221 End-of-term WeBWorK Survey . The results analysis includes answers from all respondents who took the survey in the 14 day period from Wednesday, November 21, 2012 to Tuesday, December 04, 2012. 134 completed responses were received to the survey during this time.

Please enter your student number. Note that your individual responses will not be passed along to your instructor and will not affect your course grades in any way. We ask for your student number to track completion and for research purpose only, so that your responses earlier in the term can be matched to those here.

Before this course (Sept 2012), how long have you not taken a math course?

How many courses are you taking this term (including Math 221)?

On average, how many hours do you spend on WeBWorK assignment every week?

For the second half of the course, how would you rate the mathematical difficulty of WeBWorK problems relative to other problems in the course on average?

For the second half of the course, how often is the syntax required to submit an answer to WeBWorK an obstacle in completing your assignment on average?

After an assignment is due, do you go back and check the correct answers?

Do you go back and redo previous WeBWorK assignments when you study or review the course materials?

What reference materials do you use when doing WeBWorK assignments?

webwork has no hints on where you are going wrong. please add some sort of hint system

Detailed Solutions (this would make the assignments more useful to see the process--> if detailed solutions are given, more questions on the assignment would be helpful)

Please make us be able to see our answers that have been submitted last time. When I log in again, the Preview Answer button doesn't work.

After the webwork due date, we are allowed to download the PDF files with the solutions (how to solve) and answers. Sometimes, the solutions are missing. If they are present, the solution layout is generally messy and hard to read.

More problems that require the reasoning of the theorems Practice test qustions

There need to be written assignments! WeBWork is not sufficient for test preparation. Written assignments would provide the necessary feedback about syntax, answer details, and other aspects of answering questions. There needs to be more practice answering questions in a test-like format. Also, giving our class a different class's practice midterm is NOT effective. We need practice with a midterm similar to the one we will be writing, so that we are properly prepared!

It will be better if WeBWorK can save the most recent 3 answers of the student (even if this might not be correct). If there is more hints and solutions, it will be great.

Webwork is very helpful. It keeps me on track.

Seems legit

Optional assignments for study purposes

it's actually pretty good to me, so nothing much

nothing

nothing

It would be helpful to see what previous attempts into webwork for a question had been.

Please continue to allow unlimited attempts for every question!

it's good.

na

Multi-stage problems. Partial hints or example problems for multi-choice questions in Math 221. Ungraded practice problems prior to graded problems. If I don't use those each week there will still be weeks where I sit down to go over them. Practice is the only way to improve at math.

N/A

additional practice problems from the textbook.

Complete solutions to problems

Make sure to follow along with the instructor, almost always webworks is a couple lectures ahead of the instructor!!! This causes great difficulty.

Perhaps a hint system for more difficult problems? Other than that,WeBWorK was fine for me.

I don't know if it is possible but reducing the amount of syntax would be nice. While I didn't have much difficulty with it, it was still sort of a pain. Moreover it would be quite nice to have some tips for the "Select the statements that are true* questions. Those, I find, take me the longest to complete often because I misread one of the statements and was just 1 away!

The format for inputting matrices is often annoying, but it is hard to find a better way to do this without giving information about the answer (e.g. size of the matrix)

Hints

Perhaps more difficult/conceptual questions for bonus marks. Also, more applications.

I wish solutions were provided in addition to the correct answers. Sometimes I get the correct answers, but am unsure if my solution is correct or there is a better way to approach the question.

N/A

No change required.

If it's possible, to have the WebWork as similar to the textbook or test questions would be ideal.

Maybe allow answers involving decimals, but we will have to provide decimals up to, for example, 4 decimal places. Sometimes it is hard to type out all the syntax used (For example: sqrt() and ^ when used in cos^-1(-12/(sqrt(41)*sqrt(20)))).

I would appreciate if more questions can offer partial credits for the right parts.

more questions that are similar to exam questions

Ways to talk to other students who are struggling with similar problems

some theoretical problems

I would appreciate if there are detailed solutions to every question and particularly explanations to those definition questions....that would be very helpful.

Some conceptual problems would be welcome.

Having access to step-by-step solutions or at least an explanation for the correct answer to each problem would be very useful - it's very frustrating to have to guess and check when you don't understand how the solution to a problem is arrived at. Also, it would be good to have a couple more realistic questions (like you would see on an exam) and then have fewer questions total, rather than a larger set of relatively basic problems.

It's good, I liked it.

webwork is very helpful.

everything is fine

nothing

nothing

theory questions are hard.

I like having unlimited attempts for each question because I feel less stressed about having to answer the question correctly within the first x amount of submissions, so I can continue to solve for the answer until I get it right and also not have to worry about getting the syntax wrong on my last try.

That's all.

It's a good way to do homework.

there were almost no geometric or word problems. Most of them were computational

The WeBWorK is, in general, quite helpful.

I really like webwork. I wish there were optional problems for practice.

Very good revision for any test. ex) midterm, finals

I find that the true or false questions are extremely difficult. I understand that it will be ridiculous to mark each question right/wrong individually (since if we got

it wrong for "true", we will know next time to change it to "false".) But having hints would probably help a lot more. For example, you can specify the number of "true" answers. (eg. 4 true out of 7 statements)

n/a

I would like to see more practice questions for the course.

nothing really

The webwork questions are suppose to be able to get us prepared for the tests, but it is not quite the same with the test questions. Sometimes they are good but sometimes bad. It makes me really frustrated when I find that some of them are not really rounding up nicely.

Not I can think of

:)

I felt that the webwork was a very useful tool, and the level of questions on webwork was similar to those on exams.

I like the webwork a lot. Please keep using it in the future.

WeBWorK itself is great, but I think there is some room for improvement in the questions chosen for the assignments and the feedback received for each answer (as mentioned earlier). Generated: 12/10/2012 3:38:40 PM
