Internet Searching builds on these skills to help you to become comfortable searching online. Slide 3 What is the Internet? The Internet is a massive network of networks. It connects millions of computers together globally. The World Wide Web is a way of accessing information over the Internet. Slide 4 What can I do on the Internet? Find information Communicate (i.e. email, IM, Skype) Share (upload and share pictures and more) Shop (the web is the worlds biggest shopping mall!) Using a search engine (i.e. Google or Bing) Slide 8 Parts of a Web Address Every web page has an address, sometimes called a URL URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator http:// stands for hypertext transfer protocol www stands for World Wide Web The domain name is the name of the site i.e. surreylibraries The extension is the type of site:.com,.ca,.org Slide 9 Navigating to a Site: Typing in the Address Type in www.surreylibraries.ca www.surreylibraries.ca This is the Librarys online address. This method works for any site you know the address of Try typing www.surrey.ca for the City of Surreys website www.surrey.ca Use the back button to go back Slide 10 Navigating to a Site: Using Links Slide 11 Slide 12 Navigating to a Site: Using a Search Engine (Google) A search engine returns a custom list of links based on your keyword search. When multiple pages from the same website are found, the most relevant page is listed first with the next page from the same site indented below. Slide 13 Google Image Search Visit http://www.images.google.comhttp://www.images.google.com Google Image Search is a search service created by Google which allows users to search the web for image content.
