Duties and responsibilities

• Attend the same incidents as fulltime firefighters Fires, RTC’s, Rescue’s from height, HAZMAT

• Receive the same training as fulltime firefighters • Respond from home or from work Notified of incident via pager


Duties and responsibilities

• Spelthorne – Specialist Water Rescue Station

• On completion of Firefighter development, you will receive training in swift water rescue techniques and boat handling


Availability

• Available to respond to incidents for an average of 54 hours per week (3 month period)

• Does not include during holidays

• Self roster availability – 1 week in advance

• Flexibility to exchange shifts at short notice

• Guaranteed availability of on-call crew

• Need to be aware of the impact on home life or primary employer


Training

• Paid a monthly salary which includes payment for 200 training hours over the course of the year

• Expected to be available for one training session per week

• Number of training nights per week to be determined

• Does not include during holidays

Trainee Development Competent

Annual Salary £3,624.96 £3,777.24 £4,832.76

Includes payment for 200 annual training hours

Additional On-Call £2.32 £2.42 £3.10

Per hour for additional availability above 54 hours per week

Disturbance Fee £3.82 £3.82 £3.82

Hourly Rate £9.95 £10.37 £13.27

Medical and Fitness Assessments

• Hearing / eyesight test

• Lung function test

• General medical checks blood pressure, reflexes and medical questionnaire

• Bleep test

• Dead lift of 50kg

• Grip strength test


Physical Assessments

• Based on National Firefighters Selection Testing process. (NFST)

• Amended by SFR&S to reflect an improved and realistic assessment of performance


Physical Assessments Ladder Ascent and Dismount

• 3rd floor, leg lock, let go, read sign, climb ladder, stand on sill, come down • Test of confidence and following instructions


Physical Assessments Casualty Evacuation

• Timed, 55kg dummy drag over 30m course incorporating stairs • Test of body strength and co-ordination


Physical Assessments Ladder Lift and Ladder Extension

• Test 1 - Raise 30kg to height of 182cms, body strength and co-ordination • Test 2 - Extend ladder to top and lower, body strength and control


Physical Assessments Enclosed Space

• Negotiate crawl/walkway, wearing BA, but not under air • Test of confidence, claustrophobia, and ability to follow a brief


Physical Assessments Equipment Assembly

• Timed, assemble then disassemble portable pump • Test of manual dexterity and following instructions


Physical Assessments Equipment Carry

• Hose reel, 2 x 70mm hoses, suction hose, strainer and basket, 33kg barbell • Test of Aerobic fitness, stamina, body strength and co-ordination


Physical Assessments Equipment Talk

• You will be expected to study four pieces of equipment from an equipment list issued to you during the recruitment process

• You will give a five minute talk on one of the four pieces of equipment as part of the physical assessments


Physical Assessments General

• Preparation for physical tests and basic training is not to be taken lightly

• Prepare thoroughly

• Keep fit

• Cardio Vascular work

• Upper body strength work

• Use the fitness programme as a guide in your application pack.

• Breathing Apparatus 9 days + 5 evenings theory

• RTC 4 days practical + 2 evenings theory.

• As of 2015, 5 days Critical Trauma Care
