Model Village….a dream coming true !! Vaishali Joshi Mehta, Secretary General, Sunshine Society

Model Village Project – This ambitious project was the result of innumerable visits to the nearby villages for the children’s admission who are being sponsored by Sun-shine Society.

Sunshine Society is sponsoring the education of 200 children living in and around Noida.

To select the schools for admis-sions, Sunshine team conducted an extensive survey of the schools in the villages where the children come from.

While visiting the villages, it was really disheartening to see the total lack of civic amenities and the to-tal lack of infrastructure! This is village Barola – one of the biggest villages of Noida. Even though it is so near sector 50, this village was turning into a slum specifically be-cause of the sewage drain that passes on the three sides.

It was in the year 2015, when Sun-shine Society decided to do some-thing for the betterment of the peo-ple residing in this village. We as citizens living in developed sectors, exposed to the possibilities of a Model Village, felt that there is defi-nitely a ray of hope and efforts can be made in the same direction without blaming the authorities.

Two years down the line we realized that requirements are huge and problems many. In these two years,

we met the officials in Bisrakh, in Vikas Bhawan, in Irrigation de-partment and in Noida authority without finding any way to pro-gress ahead.

We did Swachh Bharat cam-paigns, Hygiene workshops, talked to the original villagers and the current migrant population to un-derstand their point of view and still there was no way forward.

One day we visited the Primary Government School for an admis-sion of a child. It was the mon-soon season and it had rained heavily two days prior. We visited the school, talked to the Principal and admitted the child. On our way out we again witnessed the sorry state of the beautiful school – stagnant water with mosquitoes in abundance, over flowing sewers and no place for the children to be. We turned back and asked the Principal, Mrs Ruchi Agarwal, as to what can we do to improve the state of the school. Of course she had a long list, starting with in-stalling lockable doors so that the miscreants do not jump over the walls and enter school rooms and make a mess inside the class-rooms.

We are a bunch of citizens trying to be a partner in our country’s growth process, so we had to ar-range for funds to ensure that whatever we take up, we complete

it full cir-cle. We were very fortunate to have m e t D e e p a k M e t h i , owner of P a n k a j electronics, who very willingly joined hands with us and was ready to fund all the work that is required in the school.

The Model Village Project was then broken down into smaller parts and the first part that we decided to tackle was the Govt. Primary School Barola. With all the financial help from Deepak Methi, we were able to install lockable doors in all the classrooms. Quint team helped us paint the doors, small electrical repairs were also carried out and the major repair work is currently going on now with almost rebuild-ing of two totally dilapidated rooms so that the children can have more space to study. There is work ongo-ing currently and we hope to make the school very safe and healthy for the children to study and have pleasurable primary years.

At Sunshine Society we believe in joining hands and completing a circle. Come join hands with us.

I still remember when I joined this beautiful society and taught the children of our NGO for the first time, it was an amazing feeling. I felt so happy that I was able to interact with such inquisitive children and could make a difference to their lives. Gradually I understood the challenges faced by the underprivileged children in the Indian society. I felt that the government schools in which these chil-dren study are not able to impart quality education and also I felt that these children are in great need of mentors. Another major problem is the financial conditions of their families. These children live in ad-verse conditions and their families prefer to send them to work rather than educating them so that they can make ends meet. It is a harsh reality that their families don't have much employment oppor-tunities and it's imperative to make them aware about the benefits of educating

their children so that they are better equipped to help their parents in old-age. Lack of qualified teachers and facilities in government schools are the reasons be-cause of which these chil-dren are not able to reach their full potential and tend to live in the same condi-tions they were born in. This is a vicious cycle which will go on till the time we as responsible citizens do something about i t . This has a damaging effect on their mental and physi-cal well being due to the lack of proper guidance. Health is another major is-sue which needs to be ad-dressed. A large percentage of these children are not able to get adequate nutri-tion and hence they have s t u n t e d g r o w t h . Frequent health checkups and awareness programmes about different vaccines should be implemented fre-quently so that the risk of chronic diseases can be reduced.

I feel sad when I see their desolated faces working at food stalls or begging on the roads…..because when you see children suffering there is nothing worse than it. Education is essential for developing the right con-science and it broadens a p e r s o n ' s h o r i z o n . The children need the love, guidance and support of the society to prosper and make their dreams come true as each of them is very bright and talented. We can be the sunshine in their lives and take a pledge to help out the ones in need for their better future.
