Some facts about road work zones:
The most common crash in a highway work zone is the rear-end collision.
As more emphasis is put on rebuilding/refurbishing the highway system
in the post-interstate era, more work zones will be set up each year.
More zones mean more risk of collisions and deaths (1,092 people died
nationally in work zones in the year 2000).
Most ticket fines may be doubled in work zones
Enforcement of traffic laws in work zones is maintained 24 hours a day,
work zone speed limits are enforced even if no work is underway.
Traffic enforcement is enhanced in work zones because of all the
potential risks.
Did you know that 2.4 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury
(TBI) each year? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Injury
Prevention, the leading causes of TBI are:
• Falls (35.2%)
• Motor vehicle-traffic crashes (17.3%)
• Struck by/against events (16.5%)
• Assaults (10%)

Powered Industrial Trucks - What OSHA Wants you to Know
29 CFR 1910.178 governs the use of Powered Industrial Trucks (Forklifts).
What Does the Standard Require? Employers are required to develop and implement a training
program that assures operators are trained, certified, and know how to operate the truck safely in their
specific environment. Formal training (classroom style) and Practical (hands-on) evaluation must be
provided.
What Needs to be Covered? Operating instructions, warnings, precautions for the specific type of
truck, truck vs automobile, controls and instrumentation, engine/motor, steering/maneuvering,
visibility, forks & attachments, capacity, stability, inspection/maintenance, fueling/charging, conditions,
pedestrians, narrow aisles, ramps/slopes, hazardous conditions, and site-specific hazards.
How Often do I Train? Formal training must be done before a driver is allowed to operate a truck
independently. It must be repeated (Refresher Training) when the operator: is observed to operate the
truck in an unsafe manner, is involved in an accident or near-miss, receives an evaluation showing
unsafe operation, is assigned a different type of truck, or conditions in the workplace change. The
practical evaluation of operator performance must be done every three years.
