Hurry Up Spring!!!

Spring Greetings from the Social Services Department! It is that season of change and renewal with the weather warming and trees and flowers beginning to bloom.

Social Services is often hard to explain. Where other departments have a specific primary function, for example: Nursing – to provide healthcare, Dietary – to provide food and nutrition, Activities – to provide meaningful activities, etc. Social Services’ function is to be here to help our residents maintain their highest level of well-being. More simply, our job is to be here for the resident in whatever they may need. Whether there is difficulty adjusting to living in a nursing home, being unhappy with their doctor or care, helping resolve conflicts, obtaining assistive devices or clothes, assist with staying in touch with friends and family, etc. Our purpose is to stand with our residents as their advocate to add strength to their voices in asserting their wishes.

On the regulatory side of things, Social Services also is required to interview our residents at least quarterly as part of a resident assessment tool and write plans of care for any problems. You have probably all heard the words ‘sock, blue & bed’ at least a few times. We also will be coming around quarterly to a sample of residents with a Resident Satisfaction Survey so you can tell us what we are doing right and what areas we need to improve on. We also complete an annual review of Resident Rights and Advance Directive choices. We are the lost and found and investigate any missing items. (Please make sure you report any missing items to your staff and that they fill out a report.) On top of all that we like to stop in and just check with our residents just to see how things are going. Please let us know if there is anything we can help you with or if you just need someone to talk to.

We are a small department but are fortunate to have excellent staff. Sarah Barry is our staff member on CV2 and the Haven and Amber Wiemelt is responsible for CV3 and RV3. I work primarily on RV1 with our Medicare A residents and oversee the other units. We are also excited to be adding a new member to our team. He or she will be starting soon so be sure to say “hi”. NIKKI NEESE OPENED THE MEETING WITH ROLL CALL, FOLLOWED BY THE LORD’S PRAYER. THERE WERE SIX MEMBERS PRESENT FOR THE MEETING. THE JANUARY MINUTES WERE READ AND APPROVED BY COUCNIL MEMBERS AND VICE PRESIDENT. DAWN DAVIS ASSISTANTE ADMINISTRATOR INTRODUCED HERSELF TO THE RESIDENT COUNCIL MEMBERS AND LET THEM KNOW THAT HER DOOR IS ALWAYS OPEN. VICKY FROM OMBUDSMAN ATTENDED THE MEETING. VISITING: NO CONCERNS REPORTED AT THIS TIME. RELIGION: NO CONCERNS REPORTED AT THIS TIME. BUILDING AND GROUNDS: NO CONCERNS REPORTED AT THIS TIME. FOOD COMMITTEE: NIKKI REMINDED THE MEMBERS OF THE OPEN FOOD COMMITTEE MEETING THAT WILL BE SCHEDULED ON MARCH 19, AT 1:00 P.M. A COUPLE OF THE MEMBERS HAD A FEW COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE EGGS, CREAM OF WHEAT AND OATMEAL BEING COLD. NIKKI ASKED THE MEMEBR IF THEY WOULD LIKE MIKE OR LORI TO ATTEND THE MEETING. THE MEMBERS DECLINED AND WANTED ME TO TALK WITH THEM AFTER THE MEETING. NIKKI DID TALK WITH MIKE AND LORI ABOUT THE CONCERNS THAT THE RESIDENTS STATED.

NEW BUSINESS: NIKKI DISCUSSED THE UPCOMING EVENTS FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH SUCH AS; TACO BAR, ST.PATRICKS DAY PARTY, EASTER PARTY, C.N.A OF THE YEAR RECEPTION, MUSICALS AND MUCH MORE. RESIDENT SUGGESTION BOX: THERE WERE NO SUGGESTION IN THE BOX AT THIS TIME. REVIEW RESIDENT RIGHTS: WE DIDN’T REVIEW RESIDENTS RIGHTS AT THIS TIME. OPEN DISCUSSION: NO RESIDENT’S ATTENDED OPEN DISCUSSION . DEPARTMENT ISSUES: NIKKI ASKED THE MEMBERS IF THEY HAD ANY CONCERNS, ISSUES, OR IDEAS WITH ANY OF THE FOLLOW-ING DEPARTMENTS TO STATE THEM DURING THE MEETING. ACCOUNTING: NO ISSUES REPORTED AT THIS TIME. ACTIVITES: NIKKI TOLD THE MEMBER THAT SHE IS STILL WORKING ON GETTING PRICES ON THE TABLES AND CHAIRS FOR ICE CREAM SHOPPE. A COUPLE OF THE MEMBERS ASKED ABOUT RESCHEDLING THE BOWLING/LUNCH TRIP. NIKKI STATED THAT SHE WILL BE PUTTING IT ON THE SCHEDULED FOR APRIL. ALSO, A COUPLE OF THE MEMBERS ASKED ABOUT SHOPPING TRIP TO THE MALL OR WAL-MART. NIKKI STATED THAT SHE WILL SCHEDULE THEM WHEN THE WEATHER GETS NICE. HOUSEKEEPING: NO ISSUES REPORTED AT THIS TIME. LAUNDRY: NO ISSUES REPORTED AT THIS TIME. SOCIAL SERVICES: NO ISSUES REPORTED AT THIS TIME. NURSING: NO ISSUES REPORTED AT THIS TIME. HAVING NO OTHER BUSINESS TO DISCUSS, A MOTION TO ADJOURN WAS RAISED BY THE PRESIDENT, VICE PRESIDENT AND ANOTHER RESIDENT COUNCIL MEMBER. THE MEETING WAS ADJOURNED AT 1:27 P.M.
