“We already have so much in common;coastal communities with breathtaking sun-rises, luxury resorts with an emphasis onquality service, culturally rich programs forboth residents and visitors alike and a placewhere visitors can feel at home in a commu-nity” says Elena Baronoff, the InternationalAmbassador of Sunny Isles Beach who isresponsible for bringing these two citiestogether and making this union possible. Shewas delighted that after all of her planning, the ‘wedding day’ was finally here and like aproud mother, she was glowing!

Before the official signing, a string quartetplayed both the United States NationalAnthem as well as that of Italy. The SunnyIsles Beach delegation was very moved bytheir performance. A preamble from theTaormina President Reneri supported thetwinning and approved the documents to besigned. With his approval to move forward onbehalf of Taormina, both Mayor Passalaqua ofTaormina and Mayor Edelcup of Sunny IslesBeach expressed their desire to twin with eachother. The emphasis for both was focused onthe youth and cultural exchanges. As MayorEdelcup stated, “we look forward to exploringeconomic and educational opportunities withTaormina. We look to future generations to

learn and share and cultivate this relation-ship.” He went on to say that “there are somany ways we can both benefit from thisunion. We will share in tourism and culturalevents, concerts and performances, economicsand education.”

During the Ceremony, both Elena Baronoffand Dino Papale, the two responsible for this“marriage” as they like to refer to it, had anopportunity to express what a labor of love ithas been getting to this day. In Italian, Dinoshared his visit to Sunny Isles Beach with thecouncil, confirming that this is a good union.Elena, in English with Commissioner IsaacAelion translating for her, told everyoneabout the similarities in our communities andwhy she chose to pursue Taormina as a Sisterfor Sunny Isles Beach. Everyone agreed, theTaormina Council voted unanimously, andthe agreements were signed.

Following the ceremony, the Sunny IslesBeach delegation and the Italian delegationshared ideas for future growth over dinnerwherein language was not a barrier. Everyoneunderstands the significance of this union andnow there is much work to be done.

It was her 39th birthday.“I’m going to enjoy this birthday

because it’s going to be awhile before Iadmit to forty,” although she laughed andkidded about it, he was prettysure she meant it.

What was about a woman andthe age of 40?

Did 40 make her less attrac-tive?

Did it change her from beingyoung and vibrant to somethingelse?

This didn’t happen to him tillhe reached 50. Now that was a trauma. But40?

However if she wanted to be 39 for awhile it was ok with him since he would bedealing with an ever-younger-wife.

“Why don’t we make this real special?”He suggested that they suggest to their

teen age daughter that she stay overnightwith her best friend who lived next doorand they could spent the evening alone

with their fantasies. No sooner thought and it was done!He went out and bought that special

blend of champagne, like the one they hadordered on their honeymoon.

He also said he would takecare of dinner, which he did bybuying two capons at the gour-met shop plus all the nice sideswith it.

Sprang for two dozen roses tobe delivered right when they satdown to dinner.Like a dream-come true.

Everything worked out perfectly. Adream come true.

“Honey,” she said, “I know that this isjust perfect, my age is 39 and you can bewhatever age you want to be, it will take along time for me to admit to 40.”

A month later she went to the doctor fora check up. Came back with advancedlung cancer.

She remained 39…..forever.

TV networks are launch-

ing their new fall pro-

grams, but right here in

Sunny Isles Beach, we’re

creating some great reality

shows like these:

SIB Idol:

Singing the praises of Sunny Isles Beach,

residents compete to see who can lead the

most idolized lifestyle while a panel of

judges critiques their talents to work on tans,

go on shopping sprees and generally defy all

economic downturns.

SIB CSI:

“Celebration Scene Investigation” com-

bined with some forensic accounting reveals

Sunny Isles Beach always has a big budget

for hosting special events, parties and con-

certs…And you don’t have to be a detective

to deduce everyone’s a suspect when it

comes to enjoying “guilty pleasures” like

taking a day off for a day at the beach!

SIB Law & Order:

In this drama you won’t see a lot of crime

or high speed chases – just people getting

pulled over for traffic infractions or wearing

clothes that summon the “fashion police.”

Real SIB Housewives:

This reality show highlights why women

all around the country might even give up

their favorite pair of designer high heels to

live in Sunny Isles Beach, where there’s a

great school, parks with playgrounds and

activities to keep kids busy – plus resorts

where spa day packages offer relaxing mas-

sages!

SIB Hillbillies:This is the classic show featuring the

famous family that loads up their truck andassimilates perfectly in Sunny IslesBeach…Jethro and Elly May become train-ers at Crunch Fitness; Granny sells her pos-sum stew recipe to Epicure; and Jed buys allthe banks and changes all their names again!

SIB Revenge:This addictive hit drama is all about how

the age defying motto “looking good is thebest revenge” is really being brought to lifeby local cosmetic surgeons and Med Spas(with absolutely no downtime!)

Two and a Half Men in SIB:This show may be at risk for cancellation

due to the proliferation of gyms and weightloss centers dedicated to helping men andwomen lose so much weight – they’re nowat least two and a half times less their origi-nal size!

The SIB Voice: Set amidst Sunny Isles Beach condo asso-

ciation meetings, this show will feature peo-ple voicing their opinions about crucialissues including why no one should ever beallowed to wear pajamas in the lobby; andwhy there should be an assessment for bal-cony restorations - including private swim-ming pools for everyone!

Extreme SIB Makeover: Inspired by the Public Works Department,

ensuring Sunny Isles Beach was “clean andpristine” shortly after a tropical storm, thiswill be the first makeover show with no“before and afters” required since SunnyIsles Beach beautification projects alreadyget the highest ratings for helping the citybecome internationally renowned as“Florida’s Riviera.”

senior from Broward County is rushed to theemergency room because she mixed med-ications that are contra-indicated. Anotherbounced around from specialist to specialist,

undergoing duplicate tests and procedures. All of this could be avoided.More than 100 studies document the critical role pri-

mary care physicians (PCPs) play in patient care. PCPscan be many things for a patient — their cheerleader, ad-vocate and even their medical interpreter — but most im-portantly, the studies prove that having a strongrelationship with a PCP leads to better quality of life, more productive longevity, and lower costs as a result ofreduced hospitalization, improved prevention and bettercoordination of chronic disease care.AvMed Health Plans, one of the oldest Medicare

providers in South Florida, has embraced a more PCP-coordinated approach to healthcare. The company re-cently introduced CenteredCare®, which puts the PCPat the center of every member’s care.According to Dr. Edwin Rodriguez, Medical Director at

AvMed, this coordinated approach will lead to betterhealth outcomes for patients.“Some 15-20% of Medicare hospital admissions are

due to medication complications,” said Rodriguez. “By

developing a strong relationship with your PCP, you canavoid this.”Louise Schendel, a senior from Margate who visits her

PCP every three months, admits she would be lost with-out the lasting relationship she has built with her PCPover the years.“When I have a problem, I call him and he tells me ex-

actly where to go and what to do. I feel like I have some-one out there rooting for me,” said Schendel, an AvMedMedicare Advantage plan member for two years. “With-out my PCP I wouldn’t have the confidence on where togo and what specialists to visit.”William Pena, M.D., a primary care physician who

practices in Hollywood, often acts as an interpreter forpatients who don’t always understand what a specialistrecommends:"They want us to explain procedures. The best way to

get better results is when a patient clearly understandswhat they have and how to interpret tests. They need tounderstand their options for treatment and they rely ontheir PCP to help."

Worry is one of the most debilitatingthings that you can do to yourself. It affectsyou physically as well as mentally, emo-tionally and psychologically. Worryingabout things doesn’t solve them and does-n’t make them better. Taken to its extremeyou might find yourself suffering fromGeneralized Anxiety Disorder (GAD).

GAD is characterized by uncontrol-lable and unrealistic worry that is persist-ent, intrusive, excessive and incapacitatingto some degree. It is one of the most com-mon disorders experienced in America.

When you worry your body is tense andaches. Your muscles are tight. You mayhave gastrointestinal problems and feelnauseas. You may have trouble fallingasleep and staying asleep. You may beunable to relax and you may feel constant-ly on edge. You may not be able to concen-trate or focus or be alone, by yourself. You may put things off because you feeloverwhelmed and exhausted.

Symptom relief comes through relax-

ation, deep breathing, and meditation.Learn and practice Progressive MuscleRelaxation. This system involves systemat-ically tensing then releasing all your mus-cles. Learn and practice breathing fromyour diaphragm. Learn and practice mind-ful meditation.

Learn how to comfort yourself withsoothing thoughts and activities. Anxietyand worry are focused on “What if?”What if this happens or that happens?Your inability to tolerate uncertainty andunpredictability threatens and intensifiesyour concerns. Worry and anxiety arefocused on the future and potential futuredangers. You have to bring yourself back tothe present moment. In this moment noth-ing dangerous is happening. Postponethinking about those things that are makingyou feel anxious. Contain your anxiety. Setaside a small amount of time later on, butnot before bed or sleep, as your worry time.Limit your time with people who raise youranxiety level. In addition to self-help tech-niques, some people may find it necessaryto get professional treatment and medica-tion.

Remember the things that you are wor-rying about rarely happen and rarely in themanner that you fear the most.Patricia Frank is a LicensedPsychotherapist. She can be reached at305-788-4864.

The last three months of the year —October, November and December — boastthe three most consecutive budget-bustingholidays of them all, with All Hallows Eve,commonly known as Halloween, kickingoff the list of expensive festivities.

According to the National RetailFederation 2011 report, consumers spentabout $6.8 billion on Halloween activitieswith the average person spending $72.31.The bulk of Halloween dollars spent lastyear was on handing out candy (73.5 per-cent), decorating the home or yard (49.5percent) and carving a pumpkin (47.8percent).

Although not among the top threeexpenses in terms of Halloween spending, dressing in costume accounts for 43.9 per-

cent of spending, slightly less than thefunds spent for carving pumpkins.

Halloween is a fun holiday indeed, but itdoesn’t have to drain your financial reser-voir. There are many ways to reduceunnecessary spending that will ensure asuccessful holiday.

Here’s a list of simple tips and ideasabout how to make this a fun holiday with-out excessive costs.

CandyShop early. Chances are you’ll find the

best deals. Buy In bulk. The more you buy, the

more you save.Buy generic. It costs a lot less than the

“name brands.”

DecoratingDo It yourself. Avoid expensive décor.Shop at thrift stores. They often have

great décor at cut-rate prices

Once again NSE SIB K-8 has planned abusy, challenging year filled with specialevents for students and parents. I want tolet you know about the various ways youcan stay informed and involved.

First there are the websites. Be surethese two are in your favorites: www.dade-schools.net and www.sib.dadeschools.net .From the school website you can accessthe PTSA website which features theweekly Parent Express detailing the activ-ities happening during the week and pro-jected plans. You can also find importantforms and dates on the PTSA website. If

your child’s teacher has a website, you canaccess that through the school website aswell.

Next are the Connect Ed phone mes-sages. I often call your home with impor-tant information. Please keep a pad andpencil next to your phone so you can jotdown times and dates. These callsinclude upcoming events.

Of course we can always be reached byphone or email. If you would like tospeak with an administrator or a teacher, just contact us by phone or email for anappointment.

Finally, remember to check the mar-quee everyday at arrival or dismissal.Meetings and special events are postedthere to focus on an upcoming event.

Back to School is an exciting, some-times stressful time, as students adjust tonew teachers and new subjects. Weknow that some children take longer thanothers to acclimate to their new sur-roundings, but I want to assure each ofyou that our staff is working to makeeach child comfortable in his new sur-roundings and to ensure that they have asuccessful academic experience. We areall confident that this will be another pro-ductive year for your children and yourfamily.

Lazega, Finkelstein, Sunny Isles BeachMayor Norman S. Edelcup, Sen. GwenMargolis and many other business and commu-nity leaders serve on the Board of Directors ofthe Holocaust Documentation and EducationCenter – dedicated to preserving, protecting andperpetuating the authentic memory of theHolocaust through documentation, commemo-ration and education.

The Center is currently spearheading initia-tives to build a Holocaust Museum preservingand conveying the story of the Holocaustthrough survivor eyewitness testimonies andinteractive displays enabling visitors to under-stand how hatred, prejudice and bigotry can leadto genocide.

“South Florida has the world’s third largestpopulation of Holocaust Survivors, behind onlyIsrael and New York,” Center leaders explain.“We have conducted over 2,500 interviews withSouth Florida’s witnesses to the Holocaust. Theseoral histories provide the core of the Center’s col-lections, which have grown to become theworld’s largest self-produced, standardized OralHistory Library Collection and serves as aninvaluable international resource.

“The Museum we envision will feature theeyewitness testimonies of our South FloridaSurvivor community, and special attention willbe given to the story of what happened as theinfamous ship, the S.S. St. Louis, sailed past theshores of Miami Beach.

“For the sake of those who are no longer with usand for those yet to come, the HolocaustDocumentation and Education Center is institutinga Legacy program. We are challenging ourselvesto raise $6,000,000 in memory of the 6,000,000 tobuild the Holocaust Museum and ensure the mem-ory of the Holocaust will never be erased from his-tory. Commitments will be permanently andprominently inscribed on the Naming Wall of theMuseum as a testament to your family and theauthentic memory of the Holocaust.”

During the event at Christine Lee’s, Lazegashared the heroic Holocaust story of his owngrandmother.“She helped her husband escapefrom a French labor camp, sneaking him outunder-guard in the dead of night in pouring rain. After he joined the French resistance, she walkedthree small children over the Pyrenees Mountainsin the freezing winter to escape to France.”

Finkelstein, the renowned Broward PublicDefender and legal analyst whose Help MeHoward segments are featured on WSVNChannel 7 News, recounted the time he wasinvited to speak at a Holocaust Education andDocumentation Center event uniting studentswith Holocaust survivors.

“I walked into a room with kids from everyhigh school across the country and at each tablewas a Holocaust survivor. I watched and what Isaw was absolute magic. Suddenly, these 15 and16 year old kids didn’t look across the table andsee ‘some old guy or old woman’ sitting there –they saw themselves at the age of 15 huddled inthe woods shivering. They saw themselves astheir mothers and fathers were ripped from theirarms and executed. In that instant, they under-

stood the moral imperative and obligation thatevery child of God has to every other child ofGod to make sure that genocide never happensagain and the world ‘never forgets.’”

“Survivors are a very special breed. They arelike no other people you’ve known. What theyexperienced is unique and outrageous in its hor-ror. As I was walking out of that [student aware-ness event] a colleague said to me, ‘Howard, Ididn’t know about this.’ I asked, ‘You didn’tknow about this program or the HolocaustEducation and Documentation Center?’ Sheresponded, ‘No, I didn’t know about theHolocaust.’ This is a woman educated in ourpublic schools who has been working in gov-ernment for 25 years. It was in that instant I real-ized that any way I could help [create aware-ness] I would.

“We must build a living museum so those whogave their lives will live on forever. If we don’tpreserve the memory and remember the lessons, the promise ‘all men are created equal’ will bevanquished. Do something impactful and impor-tant for those who came before - so those whocome after can live in the glory of the promisethat America offers to all of God’s children.”

Discussing the crucial importance of preserv-ing “equality and justice for all,” Finkelsteinnoted, “[Due to current economic conditions],the promise of the right to counsel and equaljustice is seriously at risk of disappearing. As wehave to tighten our belts, we must ask ourselves,‘Is justice something we are willing to do on thecheap – or does justice have an overarchingimportance because it defines who we are as apeople?’ If there isn’t equal and fair justice thanthe promise of America is hollow.

“As we get closer to this thing called ‘justice’we can all be proud to stand anywhere in theworld and say, ‘I’m an American and I believethat all of God’s children are equal; and justiceis not for sale.’ Those who toil in law enforce-ment and the justice system deserve admirationand respect. Never doubt that we have so muchto be proud of - but never doubt that the job isn’teven close to being done.”

‘SUNNY ISLES BEACH REMEMBERS’According to Rositta Ehrlich Kenigsberg,

President of the Holocaust Documentation andEducation Center, when Sunny Isles Beach heldits first historic “Survivors of the Holocaust”program conceived by Mayor Edelcup in 2004,Sunny Isles Beach became the only city sinceWorld War II to locate every one of 300 sur-vivors residing in a city to be honored in thismanner.

Kenigsberg, whose own father was aHolocaust survivor, attended the dedication cere-mony where she noted, “I commend and laud theCity of Sunny Isles Beach for this wonderful andspecial gesture in recognition of this group whodespite of their tragic and painful past have notbecome embittered or filled with hate…Theychose life not death; remembrance notvengeance; hope not despair; goodness not evil. And love, not hate. May we all live in the light ofthese virtues and always REMEMBER.”

In March, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will bring backthe family favorite “Chipolino” - a beautiful ballet in twoacts, choreographed by Ballet Master Vladimir Issaev to themusic of Russian composer K. Katchaturian. This ballet isbased on Gianni Rodari's tale about vegetables. It is the storyof a naughty "green onion" character by the name ofChipolino who fights the unjust treatment of his fellow veg-etable townfolk by the fruit royalty (Princess Lemon andoverly proud Senorita Tomato) in the garden kingdom.

Through music and dance, “Chipolino” not only tells thefanciful folk tale, but also expresses a much deeper politicalstatement – the struggle of the underclass and the powerful, good versus evil, and the importance of friendship in the faceof difficulties. “Chipolino” will capture the imaginations of

both adults and children and the production is enhanced bythe costumes designed by Jorge Gallardo and creative sets byElena Bond.
