Meteorologists said it was going to rain, but not even the threat of rain could stop thebuilding excitement of this highly anticipat-ed event. After over a year of discussing thepossibilities of bringing a local Arts & CraftsFair to the City of Sunny Isles Beach andnow with the tents up, the invitations sent, and the vendors eager to go, what was a lit-tle water going to do? Rain wasn’t going toruin this parade.

And so, on Saturday, January 28th, 2012,at Heritage Park at 10 AM, the “show” didgo on, Rain or Shine, and what a show itwas! With over 50 local vendors, varyingfrom experienced oil painting artists to newartists showcasing their work for the veryfirst time, to innovative metal-print photog-raphers to natural elements jewelry makers,The City of Sunny Isles Beach’s “1st AnnualArts & Crafts Fair” was well underway.

There was something for everyone, for allages, for all interests, from whether you werelooking for something on a budget or if youhad come with money to spend. “The 1st

Annual Arts & Crafts Fair” brought locals fromall over South Florida, looking to buy one-of-a-kind treasures. Artist Michele Beaujardin ofNiche Solutions sold one of her original paint-ings at $1,200 to one lucky buyer within thefirst hour of the fair opening! And even SpecialGuest, Commissioner Jeanette Gatto walkedaway one happy customer, “I ended the daypurchasing a lovely necklace I know I’ll enjoywearing for a long time to come.”

And if you were hungry, this was certainlythe place to be! The Market Companybrought their Farmer’s Market, enriched withfresh fruits, produce and tender baked goods.Dee’s BBQ showcased their awarding-win-ning smoked pork ribs on a smoker. SunnyIsles Beach local, Mario the Baker broughttheir authentic Italian-style pizza, fresh fromthe oven. Kiwanis International had burgersand hotdogs, sizzling on the grill, raisingfunds for charity. And Toby’s Concessions’arepas could be smelled a mile away.

But the true special guests were the chil-dren in attendance. With an all-day “LittleArtists Station” tent, where kids of all ageswere able to showcase their painting skillswith their complementary ceramic master-

pieces, with the help of the PelicanCommunity Center child-care counselors. Inaddition, there was a Just-for-Kids’ KaraokeHour from 1 PM-2 PM, that had to beextended until 3 PM, because of the demandfor more singing and dancing. Parentswatched as their off-springs laughed and ranthrough the water sprinklers, in what turned

out to be one hot day at Heritage Park. All-in-all, it turned out to be a great day,

for everyone involved! It never did rain. Bythe end of the day, the most asked questionseemed to be, “So, when is the next one?”Good News: The 2nd Annual Arts and CraftsFair is already in discussion. Even betternews: It may be sooner than you think.

Gina survived one marriage, barely. Wentto school with him, and married right aftergraduating.

She was expected to make a nice homefor her husband and concentrate on thesame. Did it for five years eventhough she hated cooking andkeeping the house spotless. Shewas miserable because she didn’tlike cleaning or even having achild. End result was a divorceplus her realizing what she want-ed was to go to laws school andlitigating...that’s what she did.

Turned out to be a goodlawyer. She was very successful at it butwhen it came to men, a mess. If one expect-ed her to be a homebody or even try takingcare of same that finished any chance of arelationship.

Her home was a mess, a place to stopovernight. She lived for her work and did-n’t care what her apartment looked like. Then she met Marty. Marty barely got

through high school; had some construc-tion jobs and even did janitorial work. Hewas not employed when they met yetsomehow they seemed to like seeing eachother. In fact Marty moved in with her and

just like that he started cleaningup the apartment, even makinghot meals when she came home. She was a bit overweight and hegot her to do exercises, cookedthe right foods. He was also agood listener and when shetalked about her work, he lis-tened. She was quite happy withall this. However she started get-

ting flack from her friends about whenwould Marty go to work instead of whatthey thought sponging on her. This both-ered her until she came up with her solu-tion.

Now when asked about Marty, she saysthat he is a professional house manager. That automatically changed his status, afterall he is a “professional.”

Since February 2012 is aleap year, what better timeto create a “Sunny IslesBeach leap list” featuringadventurous activities likethese that it’s never too lateto experience:

• Build the tallest sand castle right nextdoor to the most luxurious oceanfronthighrise and live like a king – rent free!

• Bungee jump off the causeway holdinga sign that says “Save gas – take the SunnyIsles Beach shuttle bus!”

• Star in a show called “RealHousewives of Sunny Isles Beach” – orjust behave like a reality star and keep get-ting married – for only 72 days at a time tohelp keep local caterers in business.

• Meet the President (not of the UnitedStates) – but of your condo board so youcan ask if everyone can split excessreserves and go shoe shopping!

• Run a marathon along Collins Avenuejust so you can burn enough calories toorder “one of each” at the Publix bakery.

• Become a contestant on “Fear Factor”– or just decide to overcome a great fearlike having everyone see the personal itemyou’re buying - even though you were try-ing to be very discreet by using the self-check out lane that triggers a very loud, flashing alarm when it doesn’t scan theitem right.

• Win the lottery – then spend most of iton organic produce, cups of coffee thatkeep getting more expensive, frozenyogurt tipping scales…Or try to get a bar-gain on one of those new communicationdevices that keep getting smaller andsmaller – while the prices get bigger andbigger!

• Travel the globe – and then comehome realizing it’s not a leap of faith tobelieve Sunny Isles Beach should top thelist of “World’s Best Cities!”

It used to be a tradition to sendValentine’s cards or notes to your class-mates when you were in the lower grades inschool. The number of cards you receivedwas supposed to determine how popular youwere and how much you were liked. Thetime before Valentine’s Day, was full ofanticipation and in some cases dread won-dering how many cards or notes you wouldreceive. Later on, as you got older it becamemore important to receive that one specialcard from that one special person.

This simple ritual is part of a lifelongpursuit of signs and reassurances that youare loved, treasured and valuable to some-one and preferably more than one person. It is unfortunate when your opinion ofyourself and your self-worth is deter-mined by others. One of the most impor-tant traits you can develop is an innatesense of your own worth. It needs to be

independent of any external feedback. Itneeds to be independent of how manyValentines you receive.

A sure fire way to increase your self-esteem is to focus on giving something tosomeone else. Not only will it make some-one else feel good, it will make you feelgood. It will also allow you to feel pleasedwith yourself. This will decrease and elimi-nate any doubts you may have about your-self.

The ultimate pleasure comes when lovenotes are mutual and appreciated. Lovenotes do not have to be limited toValentine’s Day. Hopefully, you learn thatlove notes are not always written on paperand they don’t have to come to you in anenvelope. It isn’t about paper notes or cardsat all. There are love notes all around you allthe time; the smile of a stranger, a favor, apresent, a hug, the unexpected call or kind-ness of a friend.

Don’t be the person who counts yourvalentines. Be the person who sends thevalentines on Valentine’s Day and all year.

It’s hard to believe that the Cadillac CTSSport Sedan has been on the road since 2002when it was introduced as a 2003 model. Theedgy design was an immediate hit withAmerican consumers and it was pivotal inCadillac’s re-emergence as a manufacturer ofworld-class luxury cars.

Improvements over the years have helpedkeep the CTS at or near the top of consumerbuying lists and earned the car critical praise, including being named to the Car and Driver10 Best list, Popular Mechanics’ AutoExcellence Awards and Automobile maga-zine’s All-Star list.

In 2012, the CTS gets a lighter and morepowerful version of the 3.6-liter V-6 withdirect injection and continuously variablevalve timing, a re-design of the distinctive“shield” grille, new exterior colors and a newTouring Package edition.

The 270 hp DI V-6 is the standard engine inBase and Luxury models. Along with directinjection technology, it has continuously vari-able valve timing to optimize power and fuelefficiency and reduce emissions. The new V-6 gets an EPA-estimated 18/27 mpg despitedelivering about 5 percent more horsepower— 318 hp vs. 304 hp in 2011. The CTS Sedanis available with a 3.0-liter engine in Base andLuxury models, and with a 3.6-liter engine inPerformance and Premium models. All areavailable with either rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive.

Direct injection (DI) technology — also

used on the 3.6-liter engine — enables a bal-ance of performance and fuel economy, deliv-ering fuel more precisely to increase combus-tion efficiency, thus using use less fuel releas-ing fewer emissions; it also reduces cold-startemissions by up to 25 percent.

A six-speed manual transmission is standardwith RWD models equipped with the 3.0-literV-6, while the Hydra-Matic 6L50 six-speedautomatic is available. The automatic is stan-dard on 3.6L RWD models and all models withthe available all-wheel-drive system. It is alsoavailable with paddle-shifters.

A new Touring Package edition is availablefor 2012 on Luxury and Premium Collectionsand includes 18-inch painted pearl nickelalloy wheels on Luxury or 19-inch polishedaluminum wheels on Premium; microfibersuede-trimmed steering wheel rim and shiftknob, chrome door handles, sport alloy ped-als, Sport grille and V-Series center brakelight, midnight Sapele wood trim package,Recaro performance seats on Premium andavailable microfiber suede seat inserts inEbony or Light Titanium.

On the inside, the CTS interior emphasizestechnical precision with handcrafted details. An integrated center stack design — with asatin metallic finish — blends into the lowerinstrument panel that sweeps forward andaway from front-seat occupants.

Available heated and ventilated seats incor-porate “thin-seat” technology for maximumoccupant comfort and enhanced rear-seat leg, knee and foot room.

Pricing on the Cadillac CTS Sport Sedanstarts at $35,345.

It’s that time of the year again when mostfolks usually have one thing on their mind— meeting that tax return deadline.

They often ask themselves, “How muchwill I be receiving this year in tax returns?”or, more dauntingly, “How do I dig throughmy records and get started?”

All these questions can easily beanswered when you have the correct infor-mation to assist you, someone with theright knowledge to back up their advice. It’s all too easy to be sucked into the whirl-wind of confusion that accompanies the taxcode, but everyone has a right to knowwhere he or she stands and what isrequired. Unfortunately, some people fallshort when it comes to finding the rightguidance, which in turn, can leave lessmoney in the person’s pocket.

Also, when you’re looking at things youcan deduct, keep in mind that you mayhave the ability to put money into an IRA,SEP, or SIMPLE plan, depending on yourincome and needs. Your contributions tothese generally are deductible and thishelps you plan for your future as well.

If you run your own business, you haveto be especially cognizant of your taxresponsibilities. A sole proprietor must filea Schedule C with your personal incometax return (1040). Even if you don’t sell athing, yet your intent is still to produceincome, you still have a business in theeyes of the IRS. The IRS won’t let that go

on forever, but it does consider the fact thatstarting a business takes some time.Consequently, you should be able to deductalmost all of your expenses.

However, some things can be deductednow, but some things must be depreciatedover the expected life of the item. Forinstance, office supplies and utilities can betaken in one year, but buildings and equip-ment must usually be depreciated. Whatyou can deduct and how it’s deducteddepends on what the business is, where it’slocated, and how it operates. Whether ornot you need an accountant depends howgood you are at keeping records on yourown.

According to a recent survey, 60 percentof people seek help in preparing their taxesfrom a tax professional or accountant and24 percent received help from computersoftware or an online service. In addition, younger respondents were more likely touse computer software or online servicescompared to older individuals.

Respondents with higher householdincomes and higher levels of education alsowere more likely to use computer softwareor online services. Twenty percent of peo-ple received help from their spouse, while15 percent sought help from friends orother family members. There were no sig-nificant differences among respondents ofdifferent ages, income levels, or educationthat used a tax professional or accountant.

When searching for proper tax managingguidance, look for a CPA who specializes intaxes. There are plenty of small firms that willprepare your taxes for a reasonable price.

The Commission Meeting Agenda

Be responsible...

Don’t drink and drive!

BY ALAYNE YEASH

For budgetary reasons last fall, theMiami-Dade County Library Systemreduced library hours across the county, including at the Sunny Isles Beach BranchLibrary. The library was able to reducestaff and cover one eight hour shift eachday, but in the process completely elimi-nated service on one day. As a result, patrons who arrive on Fridays find thelibrary completely closed.

This new arrangement did not makeour residents or visitors happy. Vice-Mayor Lewis Thaler contacted the coun-ty library system to find out what ouroptions were, and then with the CityManager negotiated a new agreementwith the County to re-open our librarybranch on Friday afternoons. InNovember the City Commission passedthis agreement to fund an additional 4

hours a week on Fridays from 2:00pm to6:00pm. The Miami-Dade CountyCommission ratified the agreement onJanuary 23, 2012 and will move forwardwith staffing the library again onFridays. That gives our residents back asix day a week local branch library tovisit and enjoy.

The revised hours will begin on Friday,February 10, 2012 as follows:

• Monday, Tuesday, Saturday 10:00 am – 6:00 pm• Wednesday, Thursday 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm• Friday 2:00 – 6:00 pm• Sunday, Closed

Special thanks go to Miami-DadeCounty Commissioner Sally Heyman forsupporting the City and facilitating thischange for the better.

In the unforgettable words of one of themost amazing rock bands of all time: “Weare the champions, my friend”… just a fewshort hours ago (at the time of this writing),the New York Giants won Super BowlXLVI to become the 2012 champions!

So what does this have to do withfood? Well, if you read my column with anyregularity (or at least once in the lastmonth), you know that I have been center-ing all Sunday meals around football – andmy beloved Giants.

Tonight was Super Bowl; the game thatwe wait for all season. And I, as a lover ofthe game and of football food, was besidemyself with happiness. The Giants played –and beat – the Patriots; I watched the gameat my Aunt Elaine and Uncle Nick’s house, where the food is always unbelievable.

So what was on the menu? Here wego…

As any good guest would, I came bear-ing gifts (edible, naturally). In this case, Idipped into my terrace garden (we live onthe 10th floor of a condo building inAventura) and picked red and yellow cher-ry tomatoes, red grape tomatoes, beef steaktomatoes, Black Krim heirloom tomatoes, and sweet basil. A quick dice and julienne, some Italian-spiced olive oil, balsamic vine-gar, kosher salt, black pepper, fresh garlicand voila – bruschetta. Delicious.

But that’s nothing compared to whatthey made. My aunt and uncle are knownfor their food. Uncle Nick (who is veryItalian) begins each dish he makes withonions, garlic, butter, and pancetta.Needless to say – theirs is a lot of flavor andit is always great. Tonight, I watched himtorch shrimp wrapped in bacon on an open-flame barbecue, which he served over

“Nick’s risotto”. Nothing special– just plain– but when done right, it is out-of-this-world. His secret – plenty of butter. He alsomade meatballs and sausage in browngravy, just for kicks. My aunt, whose rootslie in Jewish cooking, whipped up a dozenfinger foods and more including choppedliver, chick pea salad, and her own cornedbeef, which she turned into individualReuben sandwiches complete with sourkraut, and Thousand Island dressingwarmed on a Panini press. That was thefirst round. She made chicken cutlet parme-san, her own Cole slaw, tomato/mozzarel-la/basil salad, various deli meats andcheeses (she didn’t hand prepare the salamior age the Swiss cheese, so does it reallycount?), salad, olives, etc., and then she fin-ished it all off with four or five differentstore-bought desserts including a darkchocolate football-shaped cake, bakerycookies, an elaborate fruit salad, and more.

It is amazing to me just how much foodis out there to eat; how many versions of thesame type of foods are just waiting to becooked their own way by different people. Ilove trying different things, new things, andgoing back to the same old things that I lovethe most. And when you put them alltogether and can take a bite of this and twobites of that, there is almost nothing bet-ter…except eating this way while watchingyour favorite football team win the SuperBowl!

So, with that said, I will not go on. Iwill keep this column short and tasty. I hopeeveryone enjoyed Super Bowl Sunday –and their accompanying meals – as much asI did. I’ll be back next week with somethingsushi/sashimi related. That is my otherobsession, and now that football is over forthe year, I’ll need to find something else tofill my column.

find a good seat and screen some of thecity’s most award-worthy initiatives andattributes - plus exciting coming attractionssure to get “two thumbs up!”

TThhee AArrttiisstt of progress is the Sunny IslesBeach City Commission featuring MayorNorman Edelcup, Vice Mayor LewisThaler and Commissioners Isaac Aelion,Jeanette Gatto and George “Bud” Scholl.

With TThhee HHeellpp of City Manager Alan J.Cohen, the City Commission continuouslyscreens proposals for promoting the mostdesirable development, creating more openspace and pursuing solutions to traffic flowissues. The entire Government Center teamensures there’s no such thing as “a flop”when it comes to producing the highestquality of life while maintaining one of thelowest tax rates in Miami-Dade County.

TThhee VVooww made by the City Commissionto keep the city’s financial condition strongand secure was reinforced in MayorNorman Edelcup’s recent State of the CityAddress as he reported, “This past year wehave been able to maintain our funding onscheduled capital improvement projectsand at the same time maintain a veryhealthy general fund reserve in excess of$10 million.

Discussing property values rising evenhigher than the MMaann oonn aa LLeeddggee,, Edelcupsaid, ““In the eight years I’ve been Mayor, our taxable property values have risen from$2.5 billion to the present $5.8 billion – anincrease of 132 percent. Our millage rate of

2.886 per $1,000 of taxable value hasremained the same as last year – the rate is14 percent less than the 3.35 millage ratewe had in 2003 when I first becameMayor.”

“According to the Miami-Dade CountyTax Assessor’s Office, property values inSunny Isles Beach, excluding new con-struction, increased overall from $5.4 bil-lion to $5.6 billion.” Emphasizing this BBiiggMMiirraaccllee, Edelcup noted, “Sunny IslesBeach is one of the only cities in all ofMiami-Dade that actually experienced arecovery on existing home values duringthis past year. In addition we added some$224 million in new construction to our taxbase in 2011.”

MMoonneeyybbaallll could be a nickname for TheMansions at Acqualina by the TrumpGroup of Williams Island. On the rise at17749 Collins Avenue, the ultra-luxuriouscondominium will feature a $40 million“ultimate penthouse.”

Meanwhile, BBrriiddeessmmaaiiddss were rumoredto have been spotted at the marriage offame and world-class design when theDezer family announced it would be team-ing with Germany-based Porsche DesignGroup to develop Porsche DesignResidences at 18555 Collins Avenue.Anticipated to be a catalyst for elevatingproperty values throughout the city,Porsche Design will feature a revolution-ary, ocean view glass elevator system her-alded as “the first of its kind” taking resi-dences, still inside their cars, directly up totheir unit and designated robotic parkingspace.

TThhee DDeesscceennddeennttss of more and morefamilies moving to Sunny Isles Beach con-

tinue to benefit from efforts being made bythe City Commission to ensure the commu-nity offers the best services and amenitiesfor an ever-growing population of school-age children. When the city first incorpo-rated in 1997, there were only about 300children living in Sunny Isles Beach – buttoday, 2010 census data shows there aremore than 2,000 Sunny Isles Beach house-holds with individuals under the age of 18.

Even TThhee IIrroonn LLaaddyy would take timeoff for lots of fun at the city’s parks creat-ed thanks to HHuuggoo-green initiatives. Andshe could certainly help promote peace andharmony by inviting everyone to join inenriching activities featured in the city’saward-worthy 2012 calendar planned bythe Cultural and Human Services

IIddeess ooff MMaarrcchh 2012 events for theyoung as well as young at heart includeFamily Movie Nights March 2 at HeritagePark and March 3 at Town Center Parkstarting at 7 p.m.; “Beethoven on theBeach” – a special feature of Lee Hoiby’s“I Have a Dream” performed by OrchestraMiami, March 4 at Heritage Park startingat 4 p.m.; “Spring Fling” – an evening ofdinner and dancing with Elvis and hisfriends on March 10 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.at Pelican Community Park; and an FIUStudio Jazz Big Band concert on March 21from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Heritage Park.

Even better than hearing WWee BBoouugghhtt aaZZoooo, kids attending the city’s Spring BreakCamp March 12 through March 16 justmight see a KKuunngg FFuu PPaannddaa or maybeeven a WWaa rr HHoorrssee when the campers go onfield trips to fun, exciting and educationaldestinations including Zoo Miami. TTiinnkkeerr,, TTaaiilloorr,, SSoollddeerr,,SSppyy……Representing diverse occupationsand nationalities, new residents and visi-tors from all across the globe flocking toSunny Isles Beach signify the city’s inter-national appeal and rich cultural diversity.

EExxttrreemmeellyy LLoouudd && IInnccrreeddiibbllyy CClloosseecould be an ideal strategy for the SunnyIsles Beach Tourism & Marketing Council– now partnering with the Greater MiamiConvention & Visitors Bureau to encour-age Florida residents to take an incrediblyclose to home vacation in Sunny IslesBeach; and welcome tourists from all overthe world who want to escape extremelyloud big city life. This would really boosttourism and keep mailboxes brimmingwith postcards from the city raving aboutMMyy WWeeeekk wwiitthh MMaarriillyynn,, AAllbbeerrtt NNoobbbbss orTThhee GGiirrll wwiitthh tthhee DDrraaggoonn TTaattttoooo.

TThhee GGrreeyy skies overhead in stormy andsnowbound regions are yet another rea-son why Sunny Isles Beach continues tobe a number one tourist destination…Theonly IIccee AAggee you’ll find around CollinsAvenue is in tropical drinks being sippedby the pools of oceanfront condos andresorts or along the shores of warm, sandy beaches.

MMiiddnniigghhtt iinn PPaarriiss means it’s TTwwiilliigghhtthere when many Sunny Isles Beach resi-dents are making dinner and then going tobed each night looking forward to wakingup in the city known as “Florida’s Riviera”- sure to experience blockbuster success in2012 and beyond.

AARRTTSS BBAALLLLEETT TTHHEEAATTRREE OOFF FFLLOORRIIDDAAThe Ballet is bringing Fairy Doll back to the stages of the Aventura Arts

and Cultural Center and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

“Fairy Doll”, originally “Die Puppenfee” by composer Josef Bayer and first performed in 1888, was one of the most successful productions in the late

19th century. Issaev’s recreation and revival of this ballet in two acts, was first

premiered in 2009 with absolute success.Bayer’s exciting and beautiful music inspired Issaev to create a magnificent choreo-

graphic work in a production that includes creative and imaginative costumesdesigned by Jorge Gallardo and sets created by painter and artist Elena Bond.

Principal dancers Kaori Fukui, Jun Tanabe and Yhosvani Rodriguez, will have thelead parts alternating with DeeDee Rosner, Kohhei Kuwana and Fan Shi.

The ballet tells the story of a young boy who works in a Doll store that has distinctive dolls from a variety of countries and most notably, the

beautiful Fairy Doll. Customers fall in love with the stunning doll.At the end of the day, the owner of the store closes the shop, and the young and distracted assistant is left alone, locked inside the store.

As the night falls, the tired young boy cannot believe his eyes! The Fairy Doll comes to life, and with her magic, she brings all the other

toys of the store to life.

After Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida’s successful performances of The Nutcracker, South Florida audiences are looking forward

to another opportunity to attend with their family to see this adorable ballet, for an affordable ticket price of just $25.00.

There will be more than 60 dolls that will come to life March 3 & 4 at the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center and later

on March 10 and 11 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.
