INTRODUCTION

The name Sunda derives from the word su  which means goodness.

Sunda also means light, cleanness, bright, and white.The Sundanese ( Sundanese : Urang Sunda; Indonesian: Suku Sunda)are an ethnic group native to the western part of the Indonesian island of Java. They number approximately 31 million, and are the second mostpopulous of all the nation's ethnicities.

Like other Indonesians, most Sundanese arebilingual. Generally, Sundanese is the language of choice among family members and friends, while inthe public sphere, Indonesian is used.

The initial religious system of the Sundanese was animism anddynamism with reverence to ancestral (karuhun) and natural spiritsidentified as hyang , yet bears some traits of monotheism. The bestindications are found in the oldest epic poems (wawacan) and among theremote Baduy tribe. This religion is called Sunda Wiwitan ("earlySundanese"). Now, the Sundanese are predominantly Muslim.

Myths and heroic stories are an extremely important part of 

Sundanese culture. Such stories are told through films, puppetshows, oral poetry, novels, and even comic books such as:Sangkuriang, Lutung Kasarung, Ciung Wanara,Mundinglaya Dikusumah, the tales of  King Siliwangi. Theyexplain the history of a local kingdom, or the mythical origin of alake or mountain. Others, like the Ramayana, are Hindu in origin.

  The most well known and distinctive Sundanese dance are Jaipongan, a traditional social dance which usually butmistakenly associated with eroticism. Other popular dancessuch as Merak dance describing colorful dancing peafowls.Sisingaan dance is performed especially in Subang area tocelebrate circumcision ritual where the boy to be circumcized isseated upon a lion figure carried by four men.

Wayang golek puppetry is the most popular wayang performancefor Sundanese people. Many forms of kejawen dance, literature,gamelan music and shadow puppetry (wayang kulit ) derive fromthe Javanese.[Sundanese puppetry is more influenced by Islamicfolklore than the influence of Indian epics present in Javanese

versions.

The Sundanese food is characterize with its freshness; thefamous lalab eaten with sambal terasi and also karedok 

demonstrate the Sundanese fondness for fresh rawvegetables.

  Sayur Asem vegetable tamarind soup is probably themost popular vegetable soup dish in Sundanese cuisine.

DISHESLalab, raw vegetables salad usually eaten with sambal

Sambal terasi, mortar grinded chillies with shrimp paste

Karedok , raw vegetable salad in peanut sauce

Lotek , boiled vegetable salad in peanut sauce

Sayur Asem, sour tamarind vegetable soup.

Oncom, a type of fermented food similar to tempeh.

Various Pepes, pepes is cooking method employing banana leaf wrapper,various ingredients could be made into pepes, such as carp, anchovy, tofu,oncom, leunca, mushroom, etc. The famous recipe is Pais Lauk Emas (carpfish pepes).

Various Ikan Asin, salted fishes, mostly seafood fishes such as  jambal, pari (rays), ikan asin bulu ayam, teri (anchovy), and cumi asin (cuttlefish);also fresh water gabus (snakehead).

Various Ikan Bakar, literary means "grilled fish", served with sweetsoy sauce and chilli dipping sauce. The fish could be carp, gourami, orcatfish.
