    SUMMER STUDIO PROJECT BOOK

When the city of Savannah, Ge

comes to mind, one cannot help but b

ed of the structured grid that the city

based upon. The preserved squares a

surrounding wards begin at the bluff

river, and are continued all the way d

Forsyth Park. This spartanic grid pro

a hierarchy of circulation paths, crea

    highly active and peaceful areas.

The tranquil spaces in the city in the squares in the center of each w

squares are characterized by live oak

    benches, monuments, and historic sc

    The design Live Oak Transpor

    W. Bay street is one of the busiest streets

in the city. It is a two-way, four-lane thorough-

fare. Major hotels, restaurants, shopping, and

access to the popular River Street are all located

off of it. Locating the hub here was a strategy to

benefit the most people in the city.

Tourists will most likely come up the

bluff from River Street, stroll around, and stop

by the hub before venturing deeper into the city.

The public restroom and drinking fountain may

initially draw tourists in, but then people will

notice the bus route that accesses some of the

major attractions without too many inconve-

    nient stops.

Locals will also find this route useful inthat it is a quick means of transportation from

the residential areas of the city into the busy

commercial areas where many of them work.

The physical model and elevations show

the design and how it will stand up. Poured-

    in-place concrete (represented by chipboard)

is used for the walls and takes much of the

loads from the roof. Exposed structural steel(represented by linear wooden elements) act

as the frame for the roof and provide for some

architectural detailng. Frosted glass is used in

the bathroom to let in daylight while provid-

ing privacy. Recycled local oak wood is used to

contrast the cold, industrial feel of the concrete

and steel. It is used for the benches and back-

rests; areas where people will come in contactwith it.

This project calls for the design o

borhood market, which is open to diffe

terpretations. This could mean an open

like the historic French Market in the F

Quarter, or like the up-and-coming Cre

Farmers Market. These types of marketconsist of booths or tents set up and tak

daily. Storage, display, and shade seem

been the most important factors of thes

    markets.

Another market type is the neigh

    grocery. Visiting Rouses, Langensteins

larger scale Whole Foods proved to be

miliar territory. Aisles of groceries, refrfresh produce, meats, and friendly loca

    terize these places.

This design is based upon the idea of jump

starting, or ACTIVATING the local produce mar-

ket. It is intended to not only attract the attention of

consumers craving fresh produce, but to invite ambi-tious, small-scale merchants into developing their

    small businesses.

In New Orleans, weekly farmers markets are

popping up in many neighborhoods and seem to be

gaining followers from around the city. The market

that I designed is intended to use this up and coming

event and present merchants wtih an opportunity to

rent out valuable streetfront commercial retail space

that one wouldnt normally be able to afford. This

will minimize the up front costs and risks of purchas-

ing an expensive location that comes with starting

a business. Once a business is up and running and

bringing in funds, they can move out of this unit and

    relocate elsewhere.

The elements that make the design of these

    start up units are:

    -Modular construction.

    -Alternative Energy

    -Efficient Small Space

    -Adaptable to Various Users

    -Low Maintenance

    -High Albedo Cool Roof.

-Green Roof for Stormwater Control & Insulation

    -Insect and Weather Resistant Materials

    -Natural Ventilation

    -Daylighting and Sun Control
