Cover Art by Guná (Megan Jensen) A young Indigenous artist, dancer and student of Northwest Coast design. Guná is of Dakhká Tlingit and Tagish Khwáan ancestry from the Dahk’laweidi Clan (killer whale) which falls under the wolf/eagle moiety. Her family has made the beautiful southern lakes in the Yukon Territory their home for numerous generations. This young aspiring artist has always actively participated in cultural revitalization within her community through dance, song, ceremonial practises and revitalizing her community’s art form. She has practiced and studied the intricate complex work of northwest coast design for 10 years, and continues to build on her knowledge of Tlingit Formline. Guná is currently attending Emily Carr University of Art and Design pursuing her Bachelors of Visual Arts. As an artist of mixed heritage, Guná strives to enable her audience to reconsider what constitutes “indigenous art.” There are often more questions raised rather than answers when encountering paintings by Guná, only reiterating the complex cultural landscape indigenous artists must navigate through every day in an ever changing industrialized world.“Since time immemorial our people have been malleable to the winds of change, had they not done this, we simply would no longer exist. This is about telling their story, however this is also about telling our stories through art, song and dance for all the future generations to come.” - Guná

Popcorn Galaxies

Explore Mount Pleasant with Popcorn Galaxies,

a growing collaboration between June Fukumura

and Keely O’Brien. Popcorn Galaxies is all about

re-enchanting the everyday world through theatre.

Using unconventional structures and a DIY

aesthetic, this project attempts to illuminate the

mundane by juxtaposing it with the unexpected and to test the thresholds between imagination and reality, life,

and theatre.

For this Artists in Communities residency,

Popcorn Galaxies will be facilitating a number of free public workshops,

classes, and larger scale projects that engage with the history, landscape, and

stories of the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood. www.meetingplacesproject.weebly.com/

Need volunteers hours for School? Mount Pleasant is looking for volunteers to help with programs, special events and be part of our Youth Inspire.

All volunteers are required to fill out a Volunteer Application Form and attend an orientation. If you have any question please contact the Community Youth Worker.

t Option 1:Volunteers helping out with programs or special events are required to fill out a volunteer application form, attend an interview /orientation and a criminal record check will also be required for youth 16+. Please note: orientations are mandatory – we usually offer 3 orientation sessions/year (Autumn, Winter, Spring). You will still need to have a conversation with the youth worker/fill out a form, but this is a more informal way to become involved in your community and volunteer. We also have opportunities to get involved with the citywide youth council. Please contact the Community Youth Worker [email protected] for more information.

Please plan ahead if you need a certain amount of community service hours for your High School requirements. We recommend to explore volunteering opportunities at the beginning of the school year.
