Dearest Intern Student, It is my honor to welcome you into our Summer Internship program. You are about to begin a ten-‐week adventure that will give you the experience of a lifetime. As an Intern, you are considered an extension of the church. You now represent the vision of our church and our Pastor. Loyalty is required and faithfulness is a must. This opportunity cannot be taken lightly and every aspect of the program is strategic and beneficial for you as a young leader and minister. Thank you for the opportunity to speak into your life. Thank you for taking a step of faith to serve here at Faith Church. Together we will accomplish more than we can imagine. Internship Matrix 1
As you can see, our summer internship program is no walk in the park. We have strategically and prayerfully organized the details for those who want to learn and serve in an active church setting. You will undeniably be stretched and challenged during this internship, but our Pastoral staff and church leadership believe in you and feel strongly about investing in you. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS OPPORTUNITY. “Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.” (1 Corinthians 4:2) Don’t get overly concerned about the “work load”. There will also be plenty of time for connecting and building relationship, networking with other ministries, learning new skills, and having fun. Your experiences this summer will not only look good on a resume, but you’ll have memories to cherish the rest of your life. In order to determine the effectiveness of this matrix, we have established moments of evaluation. Evaluation is simply the constant search to improve oneself through personal and professional critiquing. This process is not only necessary to fulfill the requirements of graduation but it is also a tool to direct and guide us to our greatest potential. In addition to weekly accountability forms and weekly intern reports, the Youth Pastor following their monthly 1-‐on-‐1 meeting will give monthly evaluation reports to students.

Practical Ministry
Time Management In order to achieve your dreams and goals of this internship (as well as other things in life) you will have to learn to manage your time wisely. Learning this now will help in the future regardless of what career path you chose. A day planner, smart phone, or the use of Microsoft Outlook will greatly increase your development of this principle. Stay organized and keep your priorities right in front of you. It’s important to define what needs to be done and when. Creating a “to do” list or “task” list for your daily and weekly objectives will be very beneficial. As you cross off objectives from your list you can clearly visualize where your time has been spent and how close you are to accomplishing your goals. You have many voices calling for your attention in life and this summer will be no different. Friends wanting to go swimming, mom wanting to go shopping, dad wanting help taking care of the yard, and your Youth Pastor wanting you to get your work done. Balance. Balance is a desirable point between two or more opposing forces. The key to finding balance is to first determine that “desirable point”. Talk to those closely involved in your life (mom & dad) and hear their expectation of you and then plan accordingly.
Finding Balance
As you’re finding that balance please be aware of your time spent on projects as opposed to your time spent on building relationships with students. Don’t neglect your duties because you’re hanging with students AND don’t neglect students because you’re “busy” checking off your list.

Becoming A Contagious Christian, by Mittelberg, Strobel, Hybels -‐ Follow schedule with Spiritual development on Tuesday mornings 5. Various Articles -‐ You will be given various articles or web pages to read -‐ Most will require a one page review
Please use the highlighter provided and even take notes on the portions of each reading assignment that speaks to you. This will definitely make it easier for you when it comes to writing your reports. You will also need to share this newly acquired inspiration with those whom you are trying to influence as well as your social network on Facebook and your personal web blog. The book reports need to be no less than 2 full pages and no more than 3 full pages in length (1” indent top & bottom, 1.25” indent left & right with NO pictures or graphics). You can include a few quotes but the majority of the paper needs to be your personal understanding of the material as well as its application and inspiration to your personal life.

Chase Time Chase Time is when YOU literally chase after students as God has chased after you. This includes the follow-‐up of visitors, MIA’s and recent salvations by the means of postcards, letters, Facebook, emails, phone calls and personal visitation. Chase Time will be tracked using a joint spreadsheet for accountability and visual purposes. Every Tuesday morning each intern will log his/her information from the previous week.
Mentoring You will be assigned an Adult Mentor that you will be responsible to meet with every other week according to THEIR schedule. Please refer to the Five Rules for Meeting with a Mentor by Perry Noble. This may end up being the most valuable part of your internship. Journaling You have been provided a journal in which to document your experiences over this summer internship program. This is NOT a diary. You need to take this journal everywhere with you. Here are some suggestions of what you can do with your journal.
-‐ Your prayer requests and the prayer requests of others -‐ Document answers to prayers -‐ Struggles you’re facing -‐ Record your mentoring moments -‐ Take notes of sermons and teaching times -‐ Document your Chase time -‐ Chart your reading progress -‐ Quotes that speak to your heart -‐ Add pictures from events, ticket stubs, etc…be creative -‐ Document people that you lead to Christ -‐ Document gifts received, gifts given, and Thank You cards…

Mentoring
Attendance Attendance and punctuality is sometimes an area of challenge. You are expected to be on time (if not early) for all work days and service events. You are privileged to be a part of a mentoring and teaching program that most will never have a chance to experience. Count your blessing and be responsible to show up on time and prepared to learn and work. Vacation & Sick Days Because the summer internship program is only 10 weeks short, there isn’t much room to play with on our schedule. However, I understand that sickness and family time is seldom in our control. With this in mind I simply ask that you check with your parents to see if there are any conflicting dates and then submit them in writing within the first full week of the internship. Also, I suggest a balanced diet, exercise and regular sleeping patterns to ensure your health. If there are days that you are sick, please call me to let me know you wont be in. Unpredictability There will be days when the unplanned and unpredictable happen. Be ready for anything and be flexible. Ministry seldom runs on a routine. Besides, that would be boring. Embrace it or build a bridge and get over it. Disciplinary Action We believe that God deserves and commands our very best. Because of this, we require your best attitude and 100% effort in everything you do. We also believe that the Lord is full of mercy. Therefore, we as a ministry team will also be quick to show grace. If we see your attitude, work ethic, or spiritual walk begin to digress, you will be approached and corrected. If improvement is not seen, you will be placed on a one-‐week suspension of all rights and privileges and will need to meet with Pastor Roger and two other church leaders for assistance. If your spirit of performance does not improve following the suspension, your position will be terminated without refund.
Power of Vision
A compelling vision tells people who they are (purpose), where they are going (future picture), and what will guide them on their journey (values). Purpose: To have a global influence in leading students into a thriving relationship with Jesus Christ. Values:
-‐ Heartfelt worship in spirit and in truth -‐ Intimate prayer and fasting -‐ Disciple-‐making -‐ Discovery and training of gifts -‐ Opportunity for practical ministry -‐ Missions emphasis and support -‐ Evangelizing the world -‐ Serving our community -‐ Building genuine relationships
Future Picture: A ministry of hundreds of students that are actively pursuing the unchurched and hurting to bring them to Christ through strategic events and personal evangelism; engaging student believers in ongoing discipleship through mentoring relationships, educational classes, and small groups; and raising up young leaders to do the work of the ministry through specialized training, internships, and countless opportunities to minister to others through their unique giftedness.

Five Rules For Meeting With Your Mentor (by Perry Nobel) #1 – I Always Adjust To Their Schedule–ALWAYS! When I am attempting to set up an appointment with someone I want to meet with–I always ask them (or their assistant) to throw two or three dates at me that is most convenient for them…and then I adjust my schedule to make the meeting happen. I NEVER send them the times I want and then ask them to adjust their schedules. I am the one who wants the meeting…and if they are available to me I will bend over backwards to hang out with them. #2 – I Am Always Early For The Appointment If I am driving from out of town I always make sure I arrive around 30 minutes early. If I get their TOO early then I will find a coffee shop–OR break out a book (ALWAYS have a book with you.) Usually I will arrive at the person’s office to meet them about 15 minutes early…and quite a few times the person I am meeting with has been ready, thus giving me “bonus time!” #3 – I Have A List Of At Least Five Questions That I Want To Ask. I remember John Maxwell saying to me once, “I will mentor you, but you have to ask the questions. I am not preparing a lesson for you…YOU guide this meeting. If you want to know something–ASK. If you don’t ask anything then we don’t really have anything to talk about.” SO…anytime I meet with a mentor (especially JOHN) I am LOADED with questions. Sometimes I get them all answered…sometimes I don’t…but I NEVER walk into a meeting without having a list of what I would like to know. #4 – I Don’t Talk About Myself Unless They Ask. When I meet with a mentor I don’t spend 30 minutes telling them about myself, my daily routine and how good I think I am. I ask questions and then SHUT UP! If I disagree I do not argue. If they ask me a question then I will answer…if not then I will keep on asking them my questions. They didn’t ask to meet with me…I wanted to meet with them–TO LEARN from them, not debate them. #5 – I Always Send A Note/Gift Saying Thanks. I haven’t done this until recently…but anytime someone gives me time I will send them a Starbucks gift card or a restaurant gift card–just to thank them for the time. (And I jot them about a four sentence note–NOT A BOOK, but a note.) Those are my rules…hope they help!
