SESSIONSUMMER SUMMER

Welcome Swim Lesson ParentsAt the Lake View YMCA, it is our mission to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities through programs that develop spirit, mind and body. This mission is implemented in our swim lesson program as the children learn the core values of the YMCA: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. With this in mind, we would like to make parents and families aware of our policies in order to provide a safe environment for the children and swimmers.

Below are some expectations and guidelines for you, the parent, as you begin classes with us. Please let us know if you have any questions. We'll be happy to help!

Cell phones, cameras and other electronic devices may not be used in the pool area or in the locker rooms.

Shoe covers (provided on the sink counter of the Family Locker Room) must be worn over street shoes while on the pool deck.

Our pool deck can get very congested. Strollers are not allowed in the pool area. Please utilize the stroller parking area near the facility entrance.

Parents and guardians are only allowed to remain on the pool deck for swim lessons during designated observation days. These are usually during the first and last weeks of the session.

Parents may bring their children on deck no earlier than 5 minutes before class and may pick them up no earlier than 5 minutes before class is to end.

Children under age 9 must be accompanied to pool deck by an adult unless under supervision of an instructor during scheduled class time.

All swimmers must wear a swim cap if their hair is ear-length or longer. Those who do not have a swim cap may borrow one from the lifeguard stand. Swim caps are available for purchase at the Member Service Desk.

Children who are not potty-trained are required to wear swim diapers.

Classes are subject to change. Make-ups are not allowed for any swim classes under any circumstances.

Thank you for your time! We hope that you will enjoy our program and invite you to direct any questions our way.

Swim Lesson FAQsHow do I know which level is right for my child? If your child was enrolled in the previous session, consult either the progression list posted in the family locker room or the front desk staff. If your child was not enrolled last session please refer to the class schedule, which has descriptions for every class.

What if the class I want is full? If the class you want is full you can look at our class schedule and see if another time can work. You are also encouraged to place your child on a wait list. Once on the wait list, the Aquatic Department will contact you should a spot become available.

Do I need to get in the water with my child? Parents and guardians need only get in the water for our Shrimp/Kipper, Inia/Perch, and Seahorse classes. Remember, there must be one adult per child in these classes. Please keep this in mind if you are registering siblings.

Do I need to stay on deck while class is in progress? Parents and guardians are encouraged to remain on deck to watch their children during the first and last days of the session. For the remainder of the session, we ask that the deck remain clear unless otherwise indicated.

Can I request my child be with a friend or family member for their lesson? For times when we have multiple classes of the same levels (Pike, Guppy, etc), classes are divided by alphabetical order. Children with the same last name will automatically be put in the same class. While specific requests are accepted (via e-mail), due to our high volume of swimmers - over 700 - we can not guarantee that everyone will swim in the same class.

Can I request my child/children be in a specific instructor's class? While specific requests are accepted (via e-mail), we cannot guarantee that you will be with a specific instructor. This is because our instructor schedule changes from session to session for 2 reasons: 1) our instructors' availability changes frequently, and 2) it's the YMCA philosophy that a child's development is enhanced by exposure to different teaching styles. Private swim lessons with specific instructors are available.

Private Swim Lesson FAQsHow can I schedule a private lesson? To schedule a private swim lesson, please visit our website. Complete and submit the online private lesson request. If a swim instructor is available to meet your request, one will contact you within 7 to 10 days.

During what times of the day can private lessons be scheduled? Private lessons may be scheduled during any family/open swim times.

Can I make up a class if I miss a class? No make up classes allowed for any class.

When will a credit or refund be issued? A refund or credit will be issued if the class is canceled or your child has to miss a class due to illness (with a signed doctor’s note). A refund or credit may also be issued if an individual is not satisfied with our program. Refunds will not be issued for a schedule conflict after the session has begun. Please see our refund policy on the back of your receipt for more information.

Do I need to wear a swim cap? All children and parents/guardians who submerge their heads need to wear a swim cap if their hair is ear-length or longer. Parents/guardians can tie their hair up if they do not submerge. Hair-ties and swim caps are available at the lifeguard stand.

What is the pool temperature? The water in the pool is kept at 83 degrees Fahrenheit. Please keep in mind that several other factors other than the water temperature go into how the water feels, such as air temperature, relative humidity, and how active you are in the water.

Parent/Child Swim LessonsGym/Swim Join us for fun-filled gym activities, such as tumbling, soccer, bowling, basketball, or a fun game of tag. After 30 minutes of gym time, you and your child will attend a parent/child swim class involving song and games. It's a great way to start the day!

Level 1: Shrimp Kipper and Level 2: Inia/Perch This program is for children under age 3 and their parents (or a trusted adult). The primary objective is to get both the parent and child comfortable in the water. The child will become aware of the differences between moving through the water and on dry land, while the parent will become aware of how to teach his or her child to be safer in and around the water. Classes allow the child to have fun in the water, while the parent guides them to learn aquatic skills. Swim diapers must be worn with a bathing suit over.

Shrimp: 6-8months / Kipper: 9-12months / Inia: 13-18months / Perch: 19-36months Sometimes the ages are combined and offered as all ages parent child and sometimes they are split by age.

Level 5: Seahorse Pike with Parent: Children adjust to the water and develop independent movement. Includes basic stroke and kicking skills, floating, and pool safety.

Parent/Child Lessons

Ages: 6-36mos All classes are 30 minutes

Parent and child pairs will learn to be safe in and around water through songs and games. Parents learn to work with their child in various positions on their front and back to increase comfort levels in the water.

A parent must be in the water with each child.

Swim diapers are required for parent/child classes.

Shrimp & Kipper may be combined with Inia & Perch. Seahorse prepares children for Pike level preschool lesson.

Classes are 30 minutes; Gym & Swim is 30 minutes in both the pool and the gym.

Gym portion is designed to introduce sports and games and promote socialization.

Parents and children are not allowed on the pool deck until 5 minutes prior to the beginning of their scheduled class.
