JUNE 2009

Behind the enduring popularity of beach huts lies a story of classic British eccentricity. Immenselyphotogenic and appealing, these colourful seasidebuildings are direct successors of the Georgianbathing machine. First appearing in the 1730s,these peculiar devices were designed to protect themodesty of the rich and fashionable, enabling thebather to change in privacy and then be wheeledinto the water where they could emerge unseen. They remained a fixture on the beaches for twocenturies until the picturesque beach huts overtookthem in popularity in the 1890s.

Kathryn Ferry paints a picture-postcard view of the classic British seaside holiday through the history of beach huts and bathing machines, revealing how the changing fashions in societyshaped two crucial elements of the seaside landscape. Bathing machine design varied a surprising amount from place to place, and colourillustrations demonstrate how these styles had a direct influence on beach hut design. This is a fascinating celebration of beach hut evolution fromits unusual beginnings, to its status as a structuremuch loved and sought after by many a British holiday maker to this day.

Planned with the same passion as a landscape garden, filled with monuments that represented the start of the art of craftsmanship in stone, andequipped with expensively constructed and fashionably designed gatehouses and chapels of rest, the Victorian cemetery was a matter of realcivic pride. It was also the ultimate expression ofthe ‘cult of the dead’ that gripped every Victorian.

This beautifully illustrated study of the Victoriancemetery tells the fascinating story of this historicaland architectural phenomenon, which providedtowns and cities with some of their most extraordinary, and charming, reminders of the sensibilities of an age long gone.

JUNE 2009

Although the concept of slavery has existed as long as recorded history, it is the huge industry of thetrans-Atlantic African slave trade that weighs mostheavily on our modern conscience. Beginning in thesixteenth century, the practice of capturing Africansand transporting them across the ocean to work onthe plantations of the New World was a vital instrument in the European colonisation of America.

Nigel Sadler gives an overview of this barbaric practice from its beginnings until its final abolition inthe nineteenth century. It covers all of the maincountries involved in the trade and explains its innerworkings and the developments that made it easierand more profitable as the centuries passed. On thehuman level, the book uses the stories of the enslaved, often in their own words, to try to conveysome of the horrors endured by these victims. Finally,it details the fight against slavery both by politicianssuch as William Wilberforce and by the militarymight of the Royal Navy, until the closing of theAmerican Civil War, which ended slavery in America.

The 1930s HomeGreg StevensonSeries: SLI 381 • ISBN: 978 0 74780 464 2Price: $11.95 / CAN $13.50 • Format: 81/3” x 54/5”, 40pp

The 1930s home presented an exciting new way of living for thegeneration that moved out to the suburbs. Young couples who hadpreviously rented accommodation in urban centres found themselvesable to afford new-build homes with hot running water, a bathroomindoors and even aerials for the wireless already installed. Some fourmillion houses were erected, mostly in cosy semi-detached styles thatharked back to traditional cottage architecture. The design elite rejected this ‘Stockbroker Tudor’ look and opted instead for brave,flat-roofed modernist villas. This book introduces the homes thatpeople fell in love with in the 1930s, and the fixtures and fittings thatwent in them. Packed with illustrations and informative chapters onarchitectural styles, gardens, furnishings and technology in the home, this book is an ideal introductory guide to the houses of the period.

Egyptian ScarabsRichard WilkinsonSeries: SEG 30 • ISBN: 978 0 74780 673 8Price: $13.95 / CAN $15.95 • Format: 81/3” x 54/5”, 64pp

The scarab is the single most abundant artefact to have survivedfrom ancient Egypt and hundreds of thousands, if not millions, were made throughout the course of Egyptian history. Today, scarabscontinue to be found on excavations throughout Egypt and a greatnumber reside in museum collections around the world. This volume examines these ubiquitous and important artefacts by firstconsidering the unique biology and behaviour of the scarab beetleand its incorporation intoEgyptian symbolism, religion and art. The development of the scarab amulet is then considered, and themany types of scarab produced by the Egyptians are surveyed. Two particularly important classes of scarab – the heart scarab andthe commemorative scarab – are examined in detail. Finally, the export of Egyptian scarabs and their imitation by the nations around Egypt is examined as a tangible mark of the extent ofEgypt’s influence in the ancient world and of the importance of the scarab itself.
