SUMMER 2016

Educational Partners: Nikon and Epson

Listen Up!I have always admired good listeners and aspire to be a better one myself. It is an important quality, I think, both personally and professionally. We often learn more from lis-tening than talking and so I have spent quite a bit of time this past year striving to be a

better listener to my family, friends, and our workshop participants. I have learned and have grown from all this listening.

As The Workshops enters its 27th year, all of us on staff have listened well to our participant’s comments and we are putting many of these suggestions into place in 2016. A few of the significant changes you will see are our new two-week workshops, an expanded Master Class program, and even more travel destinations.

Among your most popular requests for future programs have been longer workshops and even smaller class sizes than our standard maximum of 14. For Summer 2016, we offer three workshops in the new two-week long format—lighting, the complete digital workflow, and multimedia—to give you an even more in-depth educational experience. We’ve added more of our lim-ited enrollment, advanced-level Master Classes, includ-ing workshops in San Miguel de Allende. And last, but certainly not least, to complement our existing programs in San Miguel and Cuba, we are opening new travel destinations to Japan, Cartagena, and the Yucatán.

We have listened and have been inspired and ener-gized by your comments and suggestions. We hope you are as excited by our changes and new offerings as we are and invite you to join us for a week (or two!) that will change your life.

All my best wishes,

ReId CAllAnAn, Director, Santa Fe Photographic Workshops

TuitionTuition for “in season” workshops (June 26-Aug. 5) includes a meal plan of a Sunday evening Welcome Cocktail Reception with appetizers, breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday, and dinner at the Friday evening Image Presentations. During “off-season” workshops, a daily lunch (excluding half-days) is provided and is included in the tuition.

Registration PoliciesSince enrollment is limited, we encourage you to apply early and to choose more than one work-shop in case your first choice is full. Registration is available online or over the phone by calling (505) 983-1400, ext. 111. Workshops in the Con-

tinental United States require a $300 deposit upon registration and a $100 deposit to reserve “in season” on-campus housing. Workshops in San Miguel de Allende require a $600 deposit and other programs outside of the Continental United States, including our Cuba programs, require a $1,000 deposit at the time of registration. We encourage you to review the Cancellation and Transfer Policies listed on our website. Please do not make travel plans before registering or being told a workshop is a “go.”

Who Should AttendWe welcome all levels of photographers: Beginners, Amateurs, Advanced Amateurs, and Professionals. Workshop skill level requirements are listed on www.santafeworkshops.com. Many workshops for Advanced Amateurs and Professionals require a portfolio for admis-sion. Regardless of your photographic skills, all participants are expected to have a working knowledge of how to use a computer.

AccommodationsOn-campus housing is available for almost all workshops in Santa Fe throughout the year. Rooms are simple, comfortable, and adjacent to our classrooms, studio, and digital lab. Accommodations are limited and are assigned on a first come, first served basis. Off-campus lodging is also a frequent choice for our participants.

Cameras & EquipmentDigital SLRs and laptops are required for most workshops, unless otherwise noted in the online workshop description. Thanks to Nikon, our Educational Partner, workshop participants are able to use the latest Nikon cameras (including the D610, D750, and D810) and lenses free of charge during their workshop in Santa Fe. Equipment can be checked out from The Workshops Store on a 24-hour basis.

DiscountsThe Workshops is pleased to offer two discount opportunities. Our Next Generation discount grants any parent, grandparent, or guardian who attends a four-day or longer workshop in Santa Fe a $250 credit for their child or grandchild to attend during the same week. Our Frequent Photographer discount is offered to participants who take two or more four-day or longer workshops in Santa Fe during the same calendar year. A $125 credit will be applied to the tuition of the second, and any subsequent, workshop. For full information on discount opportunities please visit the General Information section of www.santafeworkshops.com.

SFPW: How did you first get involved with Santa Fe Workshops?

PK: When I became a photographer, I pushed myself to learn and improve by taking at least one workshop, seminar, or class every year. I noticed during just about every workshop, the instructor or another partic-ipant would mention Santa Fe Workshops. The Workshops are clearly held in very high regard and my curiosity led me to take a studio lighting workshop in 2008.

SFPW: What was your experi-ence like at The Workshops?

PK: It truly was a photographic awakening for me. I took one workshop and left wanting to experience more of the amazing photographic community there. In 2009, I returned to Santa Fe Work- shops to spend nine weeks as a seasonal staff member. It was the first time I had spent such an extended time with so many other photog-raphers. I flourished personally and creatively and made invaluable connections. I was thrilled to be invited back to teach six years later.

SFPW: How did your photographic career evolve?

PK: Learning photography is one thing, but becoming a photographer is another. My path to making photography an actual lucra-

tive career began with wedding and portrait photography. Although I enjoyed aspects of it and my clients were always happy, I didn’t love it and I wasn’t producing my strongest photographic work. When I realized this, I put my photographic career on pause to focus on producing the work I was most interested in.

Over the years, aside from developing as a photogra-pher, I was also building a significant social media pres-ence. My involvement was perfectly timed with the social media boom and the birth of influencer marketing. It was partially being in the right place at the right time, but

it was also years of laying the groundwork, developing my skills, and building a follow-ing. Today, I make my living as a photog-rapher and work with clients ranging from tourism boards and airlines to magazines and big brands.

SFPW: What advice do you have for others interested in a photographic career?

PK: Don’t underestimate the power of social media. As always, learn the craft of photog-raphy, find your voice, and tell your stories. But if you want more eyes on your work, you have to share it with the world in a way that most people consume these days.
