The IdeaHardly anyone could expect it: When Dr. Ralf Hinkel came uponthe idea of designing a web cam capable of delivering imagesto the Internet via ISDN – easily and without a PC – no oneimagined that more than 30,000 of these cameras would besold worldwide within three years.

A New EraAs it turned out, this revolutionary concept would mark thebeginning of a whole new era in video surveillance and thedecline of the antiquated video technology of more than 60years that worked with analog signals, interlaced fields andat low resolutions. The new technology combines two high-

resolution digital image sensors with a powerful Linux PC and does not even requirethe usual hardware compression (codec) because the entire camera functionalityis embedded in a simple software package. In addition, the optics are highly optimizedand mounted firmly in place without any moving parts. For these reasons amongothers, MOBOTIX cameras are extremely low-maintenance and capable ofwithstanding wide ranges of temperature.

Young And Innovative To market the idea, Dr. Ralf Hinkel formed MOBOTIX AG,

a privately-owned joint stock company, in 1999.Headquartered in Kaiserslautern, Germany, the

company today develops and manufacturesprofessional network cameras for security

systems, production monitoring, and Internetapplications. MOBOTIX AGoperates worldwide throughits own subsidiaries, qualified

specialty distributors and retailpartners. More than 40% of theproducts are exported.

Astonished UsersThe advantages of MOBOTIX technology are as

convincing as the positive feedback from theusers. The following pages describe eleven

Aviation Security

Since 31st March 2004, the TUI subsidiary Thomson-fly.comis utilizing the Coventry Airport located in the heart of theEnglish Midlands as the ideal center for low-cost flights to17 European cities. In November 2004, the Coventry Airportwill also become a destination for the German low-costairline Hapag-Lloyd Express. In only less than six monthssince opening for business, more than 380,000 travelershave started their vacations from Coventry Airport. Withinthe first 12 months, altogether 500,000 passengers areexpected.

Conditions And RegulationsAdditional security measures have been put in place by theBritish Department of Transport, relating to airport security:“At Coventry Airport we have further improved our securitymeasures with the installation of CCTV,” explains the Directorof Customer Service, Mike Morton. “To be sure, we keep aneye on our passengers from the check-in to boarding andalso upon arrival – the entire time they are on the airportpremises.”

Ideal SolutionBut how to implement such tight surveillance? The originalvideo system (six analog cameras with six recorders) provedto be unsuitable to fulfill the task. “The analog video technologyis too expensive and awkward – and the image quality isnot sufficient. This was enough reason for us to look for a

better alternative,” explains Mike Morton. All research lead to MOBOTIX, and soonit was clear that the digital network cameras from the German manufacturer werethe ideal solution for Coventry Airport. “The cameras include internal memory andcan temporarily store the video sequences in the case of server failure,” commentsSecurity Administrator Dilip Mistry. “When there is disturbance on the network, it isno problem to access the camera storage. When the server is again available, it isautomatically updated.” The cabling was also simpler to implement with MOBOTIXcameras that need no extra power lines, but can use the power from the datacables. “In addition, the MOBOTIX cameras are stable and robust as well as easyto install and upgrade,” describes the administrator.

Expressive ImagesWith so many advantages, it is no surprise that the relatively small Coventry Airporthas at least 26 MOBOTIX IP-cameras with focus on all areas possible. Seven of thesecameras are mega-pixel cameras with zoom function, and they deliver expressiveimages also from far distances such as the parking area, the check-in and thedeparture hall.

Everything At GlanceMOBOTIX Multiview makes it all possible: all camera images are observed in acontrol room through a simple Internet browser – 24 hours a day, seven days aweek.

The recording function of the MOBOTIX cameras is equally important since the rightimages of the extraordinary events must be readily available. According to the law, these video sequences must be stored for 30 days. However, it would be a wasteof expensive hard drive space to have all data from all 26 cameras saved 30 daysaround the clock. For this reason, the MOBOTIX cameras record only when somethingin the clearly-definable image zones moves. This so-called event control is evenmanaged to save storage space: the camera at the check-in counter for example, records an image only every 90 seconds. This is more than sufficient, since apassenger spends two minutes on the average at this counter.

With this arrangement and control in mind, a surveillance system that doesn’t missanything was put to work at the Coventry Airport. Each passenger, in the interest offlight security, will be registered at all important locations during the length of theirstay at the airport.

A Model Of Security“Even the British Ministry of Transport is impressed by this solution,” explains MikeMorton. The natural result: the camera surveillance system serves as a model forother security projects to come. “London-Heathrow airport is planning on a newterminal. Short while ago, a colleague from there came to visit us to see our IPcamera solution,” Mike Morton describes proudly. “The railway company CentralTrains and the British Telecom are also interestedin our surveillance system.” The last question, whether they are satisfied with the MOBOTIX solution, remains for Mike Morton and his colleagues toanswer. “More than satisfied,” stresses the CustomerService Director.

Keeping An Eye On The Big Picture

Safe And AttractiveAbout 5,800 active train stations are located in Germany. Since Deutsche Bahn (DB,German Rail) was privatized in 1994, DB Station&Service AG has been in charge ofoperating the German train stations. In order to provide high-quality service, DBStation&Service AG has developed the SST program. This concept is based on themain aspects of Service, Safety and Tidiness and is dedicated to making the non-transportation part of your travel activities as pleasant as possible.

In the German federal state of Saarland, the Saarbrücken station management unitis responsible for 73 local train stations. In order to improve this service to itscustomers, the station management unit in the Saarbrücken central station hasinitiated an extraordinary pilot project.

Out Of SightIn order to start the announcements properly, the announcers need direct visualcontact with the train in the station. Until the end of March 2003, this was not aproblem in Saarbrücken as the announcers’ workplace was in the switch tower from

where they could view the tracks. On April 1, 2003, however, the Saarbrücken switch tower was closed. Instead, tracksare managed remotely from Karlsruhe, some 100 miles(150 km) away. Worse yet, the new announcers’ office doesnot allow seeing the tracks directly. As switch tower activitiesare centralized all over the country, more and more stationsare facing a similar situation.

Precise ImagesHartmut Fries, head of the Saarbrücken stationmanagement unit explains, “we could have moved theannouncement service to Karlsruhe as well. But theannouncers there wouldn't know exactly when the traindoors were opening. And on top of this, we would nothave had any influence on the announcements any more.”Nevertheless, the station manager’s top priority is to providecustomers with competent and accurate information. “Asa result, we have created the position of a RegionalAnnouncer and have installed nine cameras that provideprecise images of the trains on our ten tracks,” he says. With more than 420 trains arriving and departing atSaarbrücken central station every day, such a solution wasdesperately needed.

Centralized Announcements“Additionally,” Hartmut Fries continues, “this solution willsoon enable us to provide on-time announcements forthe stations in St. Ingbert and Homburg/Saar – fromSaarbrücken.”

These two towns are located about 10 and 22 miles (15 and 35 km) away fromSaarbrücken. Future plans have developed even beyond that. “By the year 2010, wewant all announcements for all train stations in Saarland to be made from just oneannouncement center so that travelers will be informed not only competently butalso efficiently”, Hartmut Fries explains. For the Saarbrücken pilot project, Deutsche Bahn uses network cameras made byMOBOTIX. Using a server, these cameras provide live images of the tracks to theannouncers’ office.

Individual IP AddressThe nine cameras are password-protected and they are integrated into the internalnetwork of Deutsche Bahn using individual IP addresses. Thus, only the RegionalAnnouncer can access the camera images. Thanks to a customized menu, theRegional Announcer can switch between a tiled view of all tracks and the view ofan individual track by a simple mouse click.

All Requirements MetUwe Lebeck of the station management unitexplains why the company has decided in favorof the MOBOTIX system. “When drafting the newposition, we worked out a list of requirementscovering all major aspects. The MOBOTIX networkcamera fulfills all these requirements: it is small,it can be installed easily and it has an individualIP address. Also, the cameras’ features and thelow price compared to a CCTV system has madethis decision an easy one,” he adds.

Future-Oriented ConceptSince March 28, 2003, the system is operating.“So far, we have not experienced any problems,”summarizes Hartmut Fries. “For our presentsituation, this solution is more than sufficient. And I am convinced that it will continue to be sofor future installations as well,” he adds. “Ascompared to the switch tower situation of thepast,” his colleague goes on, “our announcersnow have a much improved overview and can react to a lot more details.” Chancesare – bearing the train travelers in mind – that this pilot project will be transformedinto a future-oriented station management concept.

Plants, insects, and the variety of ways in which they communicate chemically arethe primary focus of the research work conducted by the Max Planck Institute forChemical Ecology in Jena. Since 2001 the institute is residing in a new, modern

building on the Beutenberg campus in Jena. With 7,400 squaremeters of primary floor space, some 1,500 square meters ofgreenhouse capacity and an annual budget of around EUR10million, the institute’s 270 research scientists and employees from19 different countries have plenty of opportunities to study thisexceptionally complex area of ecology.

Costly EquipmentFor Johan Brandenburg, technical director at the Max PlanckInstitute for Chemical Ecology, protecting the buildings hasexceptionally high priority: “At our research center, we have alot of expensive equipment, some of which cost as much asmillion, which we completely rely on for the purposes of our work.In addition, the building is quite remote and accessible from allsides – making it a potential target for vandals and burglars.”

For a period of almost three years, a security company wasresponsible for protecting the building. “However, we were unableto achieve a satisfactory solution for round-the-clock surveillance.Security guards simply can’t be at every single vulnerable pointat the same time,” explains Johan Brandenburg. “It became clearto us that we could only achieve the degree of protection wewanted with the aid of a powerful camera system.”

Day And NightThe institute looked into a number of different solutions, comparedtheir performance and assessed their features. During this process,Telegant (www.telegant.de), a service company specializing incommunication, network, and security solutions, suggested theMOBOTIX M10-DN, a day and night network camera capableof delivering high-resolution images in daylight and in the dark.“From our point of view, it had exactly the features we neededfor the continuous monitoring of our building,” remembers JohanBrandenburg. “Having said that, there were still a number ofissues that needed to be resolved.”

Additional DifficultiesThe cameras were to serve two purposes: first, to act as a deterrent and to preventcrime, and second, in the event of an incident, to provide usable images that couldsuccessfully help to track down the perpetrators. “The trouble is, if cameras arecontinuously recording, they consume a large amount of storage capacity, and you

can end up spending hours looking for a crucialevent,” explains the technical director. “Anotherissue was that the cameras were not allowedto point at the employees’ working areasbecause they would then have felt that theywere being spied on.”

The Solution“For MOBOTIX cameras, these requirementspresented no problems,” reports MichaelHellmich, technical supervisor at Telegant’sNetwork Systems unit. “After all, the camerasare equipped with LEDs that switch onwhenever motion of any kind is detected intheir focus field, thus providing somewhat ofa deterrent. Thanks to the event-driven control system, the cameras only beginrecording if they register movement anywhere in a pre-defined field. This makesfinding events very fast and can help to save storage capacity.”

However, for security reasons it was unavoidable that a number of cameras werepointed at windows where institute employees were working. “But we managed tofind a solution for this problem, too,” explains Michael Hellmich. “With the MOBOTIXcameras, you can mask off certain areas of the image or render them unidentifiablewithout impairing security. That way, employees need not feel as if they are beingwatched.”

Autonomous NetworkTo provide the extensive building with comprehensive protection, 32 MOBOTIX M10-DN cameras were installed on four local area networks. These LANs are connectedby a fiber optic backbone. The images are recorded on a server as well as on thering buffers built into the cameras.

Optimum SystemHow satisfied is the institute with its surveillance solution today? “The IP camerashave only been in active service for six weeks now and are currently still in the trialphase,” answers Johan Brandenburg. “But I’m convinced that we have found theoptimum solution with MOBOTIX.”

Partnership And ObligationMutual trust, a customer-friendly approach and close ties to thepublic administration are the columns on which the success ofthe Kaiserslautern municipal savings bank (Stadtsparkasse) isbased. Customer-friendliness in this context not only meanscompetent and face-to-face consulting services, but alsoomnipresence: 20 branch offices and six self-service terminalsall over town guarantee fast service virtually around the cornerfor every one of the more than 100,000 Kaiserslautern inhabitants.

Customer-Oriented In All AspectsCustomer-friendliness has many forms for the Kaiserslauternmunicipal savings bank: customized solutions for the requirementsof individual companies, attractive products for private customers, and a range of competent consulting and service activities areoffered in a modern environment. For example, the bank’s principaloffice has been modernized and redesigned from top to bottomin order to create an attractive and even more secure environment

for clients to manage their financial affairs. As part of this modernization, an innovativecamera surveillance concept has been introduced.

Convincing ConceptWerner Stumpf, CEO of the Kaiserslautern municipal savings bank says, “when wefirst started planning the remodeling of our principal office in 2001, we also thoughtabout integrating a better surveillance solution.” The insurance company onlyrequested that the cash desks are monitored by cameras. “We did not consider thisto be sufficient,” Werner Stumpf says. “In case of a raid, we wanted the best possibledocumentation of the surrounding and the entrance areas. Also, we wanted additionalcameras to improve building protection and to provide surveillance of our IT andtechnical engineering centers as well as the client vaults,” Mr. Stumpf adds.

The surveillance cameras previously used were not capable of meeting theseobjectives. They were solely designed to monitor the cashier area during a raid andwere rather complicated in handling and maintenance. “And then, our mayor andchairman of the board of directors, Bernhard Deubig, brought a new product by aKaiserslautern company to our attention,” Werner Stumpf remembers."More and better

pictures that areavailable a wholelot faster."

“We got in touch with MOBOTIX and enjoyed the presentation of theirnetwork camera. I myself was immediately convinced by this solution’spotential. Our director of operations felt the same way. And the lowcost definitely was a big plus for MOBOTIX.”

Officially CertifiedHowever, until then, the device had not been officially certified forbanking environments. Thus, MOBOTIX developed a new version forthe cashier area – the banking camera. This camera version is equippedwith two alarm storages and one suspicion storage. This setup enablesthe cashier to trigger a special alert when a raid or a suspicioussituation occurs. Due to an integrated ring buffer, temporary imagesare stored non-stop. When an alarm is triggered, the images of 15minutes before and after the alarm are stored permanently so thatthe official requirements are met. These sequences can then beevaluated directly.

Extraordinary Recordings“For us, the advantages of the new system are obvious,” says CEOWerner Stumpf. “In case of a raid, the camera not only records theevent itself but also everything else happening in the surroundingareas. Compared to the former solution, the MOBOTIX cameras delivermore images at higher quality, and the images can be evaluated muchfaster. We are also very satisfied with the camera’s performance inmonitoring the building, the IT and technical engineering centers aswell as the vaults.”

Recently, the new solution proved very helpfulin an ATM incident. In this case of credit cardfraud, the cameras recorded images of theperpetrator that were immediately available.IT specialist Thomas Koop recalls the police’spositive reaction. “The officers wereastonished by the high quality of the photosthat could immediately be used for thesearch,” he says.

Secure Transactions

24/7 AvailabilitySelf-service terminals such as bank statement printers and ATMs have since longbecome part of our every day lives. Banks have found them to be the ideal solutionfor taking the burden of routine tasks from their customer service staff. The customers,in turn, benefit as cash is available 24/7 – everywhere.

As the use of ATMs increased, security became more and more important. Vaultsecurity and vandalism-proofness are as important as the securetransfer of customer data or the evaluation of biometric data forsecure identification. Thus, for example, a portrait image is recordedof the customers at the moment they retrieve the money. But canone image alone provide for sufficient security?

A Complex TaskDirect sunlight in the back of the customer, for example, can becomea problem as it will render the images from the portrait camerauseless. Such was the case for a savings bank in northern Germanythat has an ATM installed at the southern wall of a shopping center. The bank officials presented this problem to the communicationsspecialist Conect Kommunikationssysteme, whose services rangefrom classical network technology to creative concepts for customizedvideo systems. “We wanted not only the backlight problem to besolved,” remembers Conect CEO Karl Heinrich Spiering, “but we alsointended to increase security and were looking for a way to documentthe ‘hand-to-money’ event, i.e. the moment of the actual moneyretrieval. However, neither the construction of the ATM was to bemodified, nor was it allowed to show the numeric keypad in theimages,” he adds.

Customized Solution“It was clear from the onset that a regular camerawould not be able to solve this problem,” explainsHendrik Braasch, TV and radio technician by tradewho works as Conect project manager. “Luckily, about 18 months ago, I came across a magazinearticle describing the MOBOTIX camera system,”he continues.

“MOBOTIX offers a very flexible so-called ‘developer kit’ consisting of a mother boardand camera lenses on separate mini boards,” Hendrik Braasch continues. “And thiswas the solution we decided for,” he concludes. The direct sunlight issue was notat all a problem for the MOBOTIX solution. The separate lenses provide for a dualimage showing the customer portrait in one image and the ‘hand-to-money’ eventin the other.

In order for the images to be recognized as evidence at a court of law, the transactiondata needed to be part of the image. For this purpose, the Conect specialists havedeveloped a proprietary hard- and software solution that is integrated into the ATM.

Low Operating Costs – High SecurityFor the savings bank, the transfer of these three important pieces of information –the customer portrait, the photo of the ‘hand-to-money’ event and the respectivetransaction data – was an enormous step forward. Moreover, since nobody needsto visit the external ATMs in person any more to collect videotapes, the camera alsoreduces operating costs and increases security. The camera data can be accessedby an authorized administrator directly from the control center via the existingLAN/WAN connections. Also, extremely expensive video printers are not needed anylonger since the images can be printed with standard workstation printers. In orderto access the cameras, the existing IT infrastructure can be used. Another plus: asstandard browsers and the Linux operating system are used for the camera, thereare no license fees to pay.

Built-In SuccessNo wonder that the savings bank employee in charge is all happy withthe camera. “The system is simple and good. I’ve never seen anythingbetter than this. Compared to this, all other systems were unusable –especially when we compared image quality and user-friendliness,”he states. This prototype’s success has encouraged Conect, togetherwith other MOBOTIX secure partners, to develop customized applicationsfor the different ATM systems on the market.

This solution has successfully passed its first real challenge recently:a vandalism attack at 2:45 am was easily solved thanks to the highimage quality and to the fact that image sequences were immediatelyavailable.

The system recordsthree items ofinformation: thecustomer's portrait, the withdrawal of cashand the transactiondata.MOBOTIX cameradelivers impressiveimages even at night(picture at right).

“Gas-Up-And-Run” – Not A Chance

Once quite common, the combination of agas station with a car dealership is somethingyou don’t see very often anymore. ForHeinrich Krawietz, co-owner and managerof Auto-Schöttle in Stuttgart-Botnang,however, the gas station presents anopportunity to win customers for thedealership repair shop. And that is why hecontinues to uphold a tradition that hasalready endured some 50 years.

Running a gas station, however, does involvecertain security risks. After all, now that gasprices keep on climbing, gas theft has alsobeen on the increase over the past few years. To stop these so-called ‘gas-up-and-run’customers, two small analog surveillance

cameras, each with a miniature screen, were alreadyinstalled in 1993. “But these cameras did not havea recording function, which means we would havehad to watch them all the time,” reported HeinrichKrawietz.

Senseless Break-InApparently, this type of surveillance just didn’t dothe job. “Another problem we had was that old tiresor used oil canisters were ‘disposed of’ on the gasstation property in the middle of the night,” said themanager. “And we wanted to know just who was

using the premises as a dump site.” Then, when the cashbox at the vacuum stationwas broken open for a mere EUR 35 in the summer of 2003, it was time to takeaction. The decision was made to purchase a new, more powerful camera system.

Ideal ConditionsAfter receiving an advertising letter, Heinrich Krawietz contacted MOBOTIX. Thecompany, based in Kaiserslautern, Germany, then asked its partner, IBC(www.housewebcam.de), to present potential solutions on site. It soon becameevident that the network cameras offered ideal conditions for the daily operationsat the gas station: “I had a very definite idea on the functions I wanted a camerasystem to perform in my business,” commented Heinrich Krawietz. “And the MOBOTIXsolution fulfilled all my expectations.” The company manager was particularlyimpressed by the extensive recording functions, the precise event control and theconvenient display of the camera images on the computer screen. The advantageof using event control is that sequences are not recorded unless there is movementin the previously defined areas, i.e. when something is actually happening.

Drei Kameras reichenaus, um den komplettenTankstellenbereich zuüberwachen.

This saves storage capacity and reducessearch time. These exemplary featuresfinally prompted the company to orderthree cameras and to have them allinstalled at once.

No Tapes To ChangeIn addition to the recording function alreadyintegrated into the MOBOTIX cameras, IBC designed a closed network that uses astandard PC as the file server. The reason: “If a camera is stolen, the owner still hasaccess to the images,” explained IBC owner Norbert Raif. “And it is now also possibleto record events over a longer period of time.” Currently the camera images arestored for five days anyway. After that, the system automatically overwrites the oldersequences. “That is one reason why we didn’t opt for an analogue camera thatrecords onto tape,” emphasized Heinrich Krawietz. “Because in that case, we wouldhave had to change the tapes frequently."

Digital Is OptimalOther advantages compared to analog technology: since only actual events arerecorded, there are no “empty spaces”, thus saving storage capacity. And whenneeded, the images can quickly be found using date and time and forwarded directlyto the police by e-mail in high quality.

Complete SurveillanceAll it takes is three cameras to monitor the entire gas station area: one camerarecords the gas pumps, a second one is aimed at the vacuum station and a thirdcamera keeps an eye on what is going on inside the shop. “This arrangement is anadvantage for us because it means that the shop does not have to be staffed all thetime," explained Heinrich Krawietz. “One of the office workers can take care of thecash register because she always has a direct view into the shop on the monitor ather workplace.”

Highly RecommendedThere have not been any unpleasant events since the cameras were installed, aclear indication that the solution also has a preventive effect. And what’s more: theGerman Southwest Broadcasting Company has recommended theexemplary MOBOTIX solution as ideal for other companies as well:in a regional TV program in Baden-Württemberg, an extensivereport on the surveillance concept at Auto-Schöttle was aired inDecember 2003.

Optimum Shipment Security

Europe’s Largest Lime Works7 million tons of lime are needed in Germany each year and approximately 25 %of this demand is met by Europe’s largest lime plant in Wülfrath. This is whereRheinkalk GmbH, a member of the Belgian Lhoist Group, quarry some 8 million tonsof limestone in their Flandersbach plant each year and use it to produce 1.8 milliontons of burned and more than 3 million tons of unburned lime products. The plant’sbiggest customer is the German steel industry, which buys around 50 % of theirproduction. The other half is produced for such fields as environmental protectionand the building material and chemical industries.

16,000 Tons A DayEvery day, some 16,000 tons of lime products leave the Flandersbachplant – some of it by the truckload. This means that logistics play animportant role, including the automated shipment process. RheinkalkGmbH has placed its trust in the solutions delivered by Fritz & Macziol,a system supplier in Ulm, Germany and one of the leading suppliersof software, systems and services in Germany and Austria withapproximately EUR 42 million in sales and 170 employees.

Pioneering And DiversifiedFritz & Macziol has made a name for itself as a general contractorin the field of pioneering automation solutions. From planning anddevelopment to the integration of complementary products and evento maintenance and software updates, the company has the completespectrum of logistics automation covered. That is why, among otherthings, the VAS® shipment system software was developed, the samesystem used at Rheinkalk GmbH. This program links the technicalsoftware and hardware (scales, silo control, terminals) with thecommercial components (order control, invoicing, controlling, etc.).

Unmanned And IndependentOne of the advantages of VAS®: the entire loading and weighing processes as wellas delivery processing, including the control of the gates, access controls and processcontrols, can be done by the truck drivers themselves. They simply log onto thesystem using special ID cards in credit card format. This so-called unmanned self-serve shipment completion saves on personnel costs and allows shipments to bepicked up trouble-free at night or during the weekend.

The system makes work a lot easier for Karl-Otto Geruhn, head of shipment at theFlandersbach plant: “Our fully automated silos recognize the cards and the datastored on them and perform only the loading process that has been ordered. Anyattempts to load other quantities or products are automatically rejected.”

So, it’s a sure thing? “Not completely,” admitted the shipment manager. “If the IDcard is misused or used incorrectly, I have to know exactly which truck was actuallyin the plant. As proof, I need reliable images that can be used even in a court oflaw.”

The Complete Range Of Data And InformationThe shipment system software also offers an exemplarysolution to solve this problem – an integrated visualizationapplication. A network camera from MOBOTIX automaticallyregisters all the vehicles on the scales with their license platenumbers, the date and the time and assigns the photo withall the information stored on the ID card to the correspondingdelivery note and the calibration records. Thus, the shipmentmanager has not only the pictures, he has all the other datapertaining to the complete process. “So it’s easy to find outquickly when a truck from any transport company broughta quantity of a product out of the plant. This means that anyinconsistencies can be cleared up immediately.”

Innovative And ProfessionalFor Claus Jordan, manager of Sales & Marketing Industrial Applications at Fritz &Macziol, the innovative potential and professionalism of the camera were the majorreasons why his company decided to use MOBOTIX technology at Rheinkalk GmbH.In addition, the versatile application and attractive price-performance ratio of thesolution had those responsible at Fritz & Macziol convinced. "And we shouldn’tforget,” continued the Sales and Marketing manager, “that the camera is very robustand weatherproof, making it particularly suitable for use in the harsh environmentof a quarry company.”

Trouble-Free And ReliableIt is no wonder, then, that the system supplier uses the MOBOTIX solution for othercustomers in the raw material and bulk goods industries as well as in otherapplications, such as in building progress documentation. “We simply think that thistechnology is excellent,” explained Claus Jordan. “And there has not been onemalfunction yet. The cameras operate completely reliably.” Shipment manager Karl-Otto Geruhn is also satisfied: “A system that I hardly notice because it fulfills all therequirements and simply works without a problem is always a good system.”

Leading SuppliersWith more than 700 reference facilities throughout the world,MAN Logistics is among the leading suppliers in warehousingand materials handling technology. Approximately 160employees in the company based in Heilbronn, Germany, make sure that their customers get the ideal solutions toall their logistics needs (www.manlogistics.de).

Here is just one example: MAN Logistics engineered a high-rack warehouse with 6 aisles and approx. 20,000 storingpositions for chemical, euro and industrial pallets for globalplayer Aventis Pharma in Frankfurt. With 9,000 employeesand sales amounting to approximately EUR 2.9 billion,Aventis Pharma is one of the leading pharmaceuticalcompanies in the German market. Two of the 6-rack aislesinclude cooling. The heart of the high-rack system is thematerials handling equipment with a total of some 200 drivetrains and the six 31m high automatic rack feeders, eachof which manages approximately 25 double movements,i.e. combined loading and unloading processes, an hourin the around 100m long aisles.

Optimum AvailabilityThe high-tech equipment also includes MOBOTIX camera technology, which can beideally integrated into industrial plants and production machinery. Two cameras areinstalled on each of the rack feeders. They make managing possible malfunctionssignificantly easier, thus optimizing the availability of the high-rack warehouse.

Documented History“Most cameras don’t begin to record until the alarm goes off,” explained GeorgLeichtle, head of the control department at MAN Logistics. “What fascinated us aboutthe MOBOTIX technology is the fact that the network camera also documents theevents prior to the alarm and shows us how the malfunction occurred. This isimportant information that we cannot do without." When everything is runningsmoothly, the camera simply overwrites the previously stored image sequences. Ifan error occurs, this event stops the camera from overwriting these images. If desired, the images recorded in the last seconds before the malfunction occurred can thenbe analyzed.

Quick And PreciseThis makes it possible to process the malfunction quickly and precisely – andfrequently, it is not even necessary to shut down the system to allow a servicetechnician to inspect the rack affected. If it is necessary to eliminate the problem onlocation, however, the video images make it possible to determine exactly whichtools or spare parts will be needed.

Many Features“We did some pretty intensive research in advance to find a camera suitable for ourrack feeders,” Georg Leichtle said. And they finally found just what they wanted onthe homepage of IT and automation service provider IBC (www.housewebcam.de),which introduced the company to the MOBOTIX technology and competently presentedthe many diverse possibilities, features and application stages.

MOBOTIX Offers MobilityThe cameras on the automatic rack feeders at Aventis are connected to a mobileaccess point. Thus, the live images can be transmitted from the rack aisle via mobilecommunications either continuously or event-controlled and also fed into the TCP/IPEthernet, for example, so that any access-authorized PC can manage and operatethe cameras remotely using just a browser. This makes it possible for MAN Logisticsto dial directly into the customer’s system from the service center in Heilbronn viaa router connection – and, if needed, to give tips on how to eliminate the problem. It would also be possible to transmit a visual error message directly to a servicetechnician’s handheld computer or PDA.

Ideally Suited To Industrial Applications“And finally,” continued Georg Leichtle, “the attractive price-performance ratio andthe industrial design of the cameras spoke clearly in favor of MOBOTIX: the camerahousing is extremely robust, is very shock and vibration resistant and operates welleven in harsh environments, where they have to deal with dust and steam, forexample. In addition, the camera system is designed in such a way that it can beretrofitted to existing rack feeders without having to intervene into the actual machinecontrols.”

Cost SavingsThere are many features that give the sales team at MAN Logistics good argumentsin selling the systems. “With the integration of MOBOTIX network camerasin the rack feeders, we have gained a leading position in the industry,”summarized Mark Vogt, head of sales. “And this commitment will pay off. After all, simplifying maintenance, enhancing availability and the resultingcost savings are unbeatable advantages that the market welcomes withenthusiasm and is also beginning to demand. The next projects withintegrated camera technology are already in the planning."

The company plans to use the MOBOTIX M10-DevKit (Developer IntegrationKit), which is equipped with a fisheye lens and a special zoom function. This function makes it possible to virtually select a section of the image withthe mouse and also facilitates remote transmission.

Westpfälzische Ver- und Entsorgungs-GmbH (WVE)20/32

Safe Operations From A Distance

Low Cost, Long TermThe WVE (Westpfälzische Ver- und Entsorgungs-GmbH) was founded in theKaiserslautern area in 1994 as a public services company. The WVE provides freshwater, sewage treatment and zoning/development services for the communities inthe area. The communities, in turn, are able to efficiently outsource expensive tasks.

Example: Sewage PlantThe WVE is able to provide all required services regarding thesewage plant operation in short notice. For tasks like these, theWVE uses its own employees, its special equipment and equipmentof other communities. In the process, the WVE cooperates closelywith the Kaiserslautern city waterworks and the TWK (TechnischeWerke Kaiserslautern AG). These WVE services are particularlyattractive for the small surrounding towns and communities thathave strong interest in reducing their costs. One of these smalltowns is Hochspeyer – about 7 miles east of Kaiserslautern – withapproximately 7,000 inhabitants.

Always ReadyThe three sewage plants of the Hochspeyer community are locatedin Hochspeyer, Frankenstein and Waldleiningen. Three WVEemployees operate and maintain all three plants locally. Sincean on-site 24/7 presence would be too costly, an electronicmonitoring system reports possible malfunctions occurring afterwork hours to the permanently manned control center at theKaiserslautern central sewage plant. Here, the necessary measuresare taken. Because the government requires the installation tobe checked once a day, the WVE employees have to perform theseon-site checks even during the weekends.

Weekend ProblemsWVE wastewater manager Michael Theis describes the situation as follows, “theseweekend shifts cause our work plans to be quite complicated and are also creatingextra costs to the community as an on-site check at all three locations amounts toaround 250 EUR. Additionally, driving to the individual locations on ice and snow inthe winter time can be quite dangerous – just to check the sewage plant for 15 to30 minutes. This prompted us to look for an alternative”, Michael Theis adds.

A Network Cameras Is The KeyDieter Burkey, electrics manager with the Kaiserslautern city waterworks states, “atabout the same time, we were testing a MOBOTIX network camera for monitoringthe security of our central sewage plant.” Michael Theis adds, “next, we startedwondering if this camera could solve our weekend problem as well.”

Indeed, it could. Not only is thisreliable and weatherproof cameraequipped with a large number ofrequired features, but it is also easilyoperated using a standard Internetbrowser. In close cooperation,MOBOTIX and the WVE havedeveloped some additional featuresthat were necessary for operatingat the sewage plant. “The result isa customized solut ion thatcompletely meets our requirements,”concludes Michael Theis.

24/7 SurveillanceWith minimum effort, the camerahas been installed at the Hochspeyerfinal clarifier for a pilot project. Fromthere, it sends a tele and a wide-angle image twice a day via ISDN to a server. Inthe control center at the Kaiserslautern central sewage plant 7 miles away, theoperator on duty compares the current live images to the stored images of the targetsituation. If the images show signs of abnormal operation, the operator on dutyimmediately informs the emergency crew.

Secure OperationsIf desired, the live images can be viewed from the control center at any time to checkthe plant’s current status. Also, a process control system provides for regularmeasurements of the PH value. Thus, regular checks are now implemented remotely, resulting in even more secure sewage plant operation.

An Investment WorthwhileThanks to the introduction of camera remote monitoring at the Hochspeyer facility, the expensive weekend shifts are history and the use of on-site manpower has beenoptimized. “The MOBOTIX camera comes with all required features,” Dieter Burkeysummarizes. “A very reliable, high-quality support and a reasonable price for whatyou get – we are very satisfied with the entire package,” he adds.

Reliable Operation In The Antarctic Cold

Far Below FreezingWhen searching for answers, scientists frequently have to cope with extremeconditions. The Meteorological Institute in Munich (MIM) for example, uses a weather

station at an elevation of 2,965m (9,728ft) on Germany’s highestpeak, the Zugspitze mountain, to study the occurence of bannerclouds. The German Federal Agency for Cartography andGeodesy (BKG), in turn, is one of the participants in the GermanAntarctic Receiving Station (GARS) project in O'Higgins/Antarctica.At the GARS site, a radio telescope permanently collects dataon plate tectonics, i.e. the continental drift. While temperatureson the Zugspitze may drop below -25°C (-13°F), they may beas low as -40°C (-40°F) in Antarctica – accompanied by windsof up to 200km/h (130mph).

No scientist can be forced to permanently work under theseconditions. That is why the researchers rely on video technologyfor digital image recording. The only problem is – where to finda video camera that operates reliably under such conditions?

In The Picture All The TimeIn the beginning, an analog video camera was supposed tomonitor the radio telescope 24/7 through a window of theGerman Antarctic Receiving Station (GARS). “Unfortunately, thecamera only worked to our expectations when there was enoughlight outside and when the window was not snowed in,”remembers information scientist Reiner Wojdziak who spends

several months each year in Antarctica. Thus, a MOBOTIX camera was installed ata sheltered spot of the station's outside wall where it has to resist temperatures ofas low as -40°C (-40°F).

The camera is integrated into the station’s LAN and provides real-time images onthis subnet. In order to save transfer capacity, current images are sent to the Internetonly about every 10 minutes via satellite (http://vlbi.leipzig.ifag.de/ohiggins/ohig-web.jpg).

“Since the MOBOTIX camera has been installed, we have permanent first class eyecontact with the radio telescope and, thus, can monitor its position continuously,”reports Reiner Wojdziak. “We are absolutely satisfied with this solution,” he emphasizes.

At The TopThe MIM uses a MOBOTIX camera located at the environmental research stationSchneefernerhaus (UFS) at an altitude of 2,650m (8,694ft) on the South slope of theZugspitze mountain. The images recorded there are used to evaluate the measuredultra-violet light. For a breathtaking view from the Zugspitze peak, go towww.schneefernerhaus.de/camera.jpg. on the German weather service (DWD) observation platform at the Zugspitze peak,a location where an online connection is not possible. Therefore, a mini networkconsisting of a Linux computer and the camera that is continuously documentingbanner cloud development has been installed. During the day, the camera recordsa jpg image every five seconds. At night, the computer generates an mpeg film ofthe individual images, which is then sent to the Meteorological Institute in Munichfor evaluation.

Deep Frozen Operation“For location at the Zugspitze peak it was a prerequisite that the camera resiststemperatures below -25°C (-13°F),” explains meteorologist Mario Mech. “For thisreason, we tested the camera at the institute prior to its installation for an entireweek at -35°C (-31°F) and it worked perfectly,” he adds. Sturdiness is one of the coredesign principles of MOBOTIX cameras. To achieve this, the cameras do not haveany moving parts such as zoom, pan or tilt mechanisms.

Sturdy And Absolutely WeatherproofThe third camera is installed on the institute’s roof so that the visitors of theMIM website can check not only the current weather data but also viewthe result ing images (www.meteo.physik.uni-muenchen.de/mesomikro/stadt/camera.jpg). “Previously, we were working with a differentweb cam,” tells meteorologist Heinz Lösslein. “But after some time, thiscamera had burnt areas on its image sensor that were caused by exposureto direct sunlight. And weather cameras are frequently exposed to directsunlight,” he states. “Astonishingly, the MOBOTIX camera has proven tobe ‘sun-proof’ and, thus, is a very good choice for us,” Heinz Lössleincontinues.

“Also, Linux as the camera’s operating system is very much appreciatedby the university environment,” emphasizes Dr. Joachim Reuder who is incharge of the UFS project. “On top of this, no other camera features such awide range of networking possibilities, such as ftp, email and nfs. No othercamera system that I know of is better suited for our needs,” he summarizes.

Perfect Pictures On The Internet

DaimlerChrysler AG sold 3.85 million passenger cars and approximately 501,000commercial vehicles worldwide in fiscal year 2003 and earned EUR 135.4 billion insales. One source of these sales that is not to be underestimated is the sale of usedcompany cars that are equipped with many high-quality extras, are well cared for, receive excellent servicing and meet very high quality standards. In selling usedcompany cars, sales via the Internet (mercedes-benz.de, autoscout24.de, mobile.deetc.) are rapidly becoming more popular. A professional imaging process wasdevised to promote this development and to provide a perfect presentation of thesehigh-quality vehicles.

But before the used company cars appear on the Internet, the vehicles are thoroughlyoverhauled, any visual blemishes are eliminated and they are photographed. Thisstandard procedure is performed at the DaimlerChrysler vehicle reconditioninglocations in Fellbach, Sindelfingen and Untertürkheim in Germany. To present thevehicles on the Internet, a systems supplier developed special imaging software that

automatically allocates all the sales-relevant vehicle informationto the original photo, a very intelligent way to present theseproducts on the Internet.

Brilliant and RobustBut what was needed first was a camera that not only shootsbrilliant photographs, but one that can also be easily integratedinto the network.

During their research, the employees at the systems supplierstumbled across the MOBOTIX technology. Thomas Seeliger, owner of Sit-Livecam (www.sit-livecam.de) and a MOBOTIXpartner, then received an opportunity to present the networkcamera made by the Kaiserslautern-based company with itsversatile range of features and uses. The concept was convincing, the camera met all the requirements – and so the decision wasmade to integrate the MOBOTIX solution into the imaging process. The software and the camera were adjusted to make a perfect

match.

Uniform Photo SetsFirst, however, it was necessary tobuild uniform photo sets with identicalimage backgrounds and outstandinglighting at all three locations to ensurea consistent presentation of thevehicles. The cameras were thenmounted on a mobile photo stationwith a monitor and connected directlyto the LAN. To photograph the manydifferent vehicle models, sizes,

shapes and colors while investing as little time andeffort as possible to each vehicle receiving a perfectpresentation and maintaining a uniform professionallook with all the images, the vehicle positioning, theangle, the position of the photo station and thealignment of the spotlights were defined to guaranteethe best possible picture every time – regardlessof whether it was an A-class or an SLK that wasbeing photographed. Just two http commandvariations had to be integrated into the program, making the handling signif icantly easier.

Facts and FiguresTo take the vehicle pictures, the MOBOTIX camerais used as a web cam. The camera delivers thecurrent live image of the vehicle parked in the correctposition via http access to the integrated web server. Thisprocess is comparable to pressing the camera’s shutterrelease when taking a shot. The live image is retrieved fromthe web cam every three seconds and it appears on thecomputer screen. The operator then stores the current imageof the used company car along with the correspondingvehicle data on a web server with a click of the mouse, which ensures that the information is stored directly on theright Internet platform.

The quality of the MOBOTIX pictures corresponds to that ofa digital camera. To get your own first-hand impression ofthe uniform, professional look of the vehicle presentation, simply click on www.mercedes-benz.de ➤ Gebraucht-fahrzeuge ➤ PKW ➤ Online-Suche ➤ Fahrzeugbestand:➤ Werkswagen on the Internet.

Improved ChancesDaimlerChrysler is very happy with the results. Head of SalesPeter Gruner commented: “Thanks to MOBOTIX technology,we have found an efficient and stable, yet still user-friendlyway to take the best possible photos of our used companycars – and that improves our chances of selling them onthe Internet considerably.”

Event-controlledrecording goes intoaction when movementis detected in any ofthe freely definablevideo motion windows.

Safe InvestmentThe MOBOTIX IP-camera is the first and only weatherproof network camera to datewith an integrated recorder function, video management system, video sensors andaudio. The free scalability of the number of cameras, storage capacity and dataconnections (IDSN, DSL, Ethernet, WLAN, GSM, copper, fiber optics) ensures systemflexibility, low cost of system expansion and safe investment protection.

Performance Through VersatilityThe MOBOTIX IP cameras feature internal as well as externalrecording. Any standard file server (Linux, Windows) can beused for external storage. The camera manages the entiredatabase without requiring any additional software. All therecording, FTP and e-mail functions can be either time orevent-controlled.

Multi-FunctionalShould you want to simultaneously display multiple camerason the PC or a monitor wall with a high image rate, a controlstation software (MxPEG Viewer) is also available free ofcharge. Alarms can be signaled via e-mail, SMS or telephonecall or even via a PDA. Talkback over IP and telephone isalready integrated. Despite the wide range of functionsavailable, the camera is as easy to connect as a network

No Problems With Backlight

Exposure Zones Instead Of BacklightMost cameras more or less shut down when they are confronted with backlight.Unfortunately, the areas of interest usually remain dark. A backlight function is oftenused to try to remedy the situation – but even then, the results are disappointing.

MOBOTIX has taken a whole new approach to solving this problem by using freely-definable exposure zones. This is possible due to the cameras' not requiring an autoiris lens. And what’s more, freely-definable exposure zones make more sensebecause the camera’s automatic features then always know exactly which areasof the picture you want to have exposed perfectly.

Individually ProfessionalThe exposure zones in the MOBOTIX camera can be configuredfreely in terms of number and position in the picture - this can alsobe done remotely via the network. The example shows the differencesbetween a shot without using exposure areas (on the right) and oneusing the exposure zones on the outside of the doorway.

When It Is Really Important…The original photograph of the scene at the bank makes it clear howimportant this function is. Conventional cameras would darken thefaces in the foreground – and in the event of a holdup, it would bevery difficult to identify the perpetrator. In contrast, the MOBOTIXcamera was configured with an exposure zone in the lower half ofthe image to prevent the light coming through the window fromaffecting the the exposure time so that the relevant parts of thepicture are illuminated correctly.

Unique Storage ConceptThe MOBOTIX storage concept is so simple, yet so unique, that it never ceases toamaze. The fact that the camera stores images or videos internally in a 64-MB ringbuffer is still quite understandable to most, but that it stores the ring buffer on a PChard disk via the network and manages it on its own is almost unbelievable. Afterall, it is the MOBOTIX camera that organizes all the data itself and not the PC. It isnot necessary to have an FTP or any other software on the PC; a standard WindowsTM

or LinuxTM operating system is all you need. In combination with large server systemsand RAID disks, the storage capacity and reliability have virtually no limits – and itall operates using inexpensive standard and readily available IT components.

Low Network LoadThe MOBOTIX storage concept reinforces the advantage of low network loadagainst the centralized PC solutions with video management software. Afterall, why continuously send camera images to the centralized PC forprocessing when the data processing can take place in the camera and thecamera manages storage itself. In addition, due to the temporary storing ofimages in the camera, short network failures or shutdowns (e.g. changing ofa switch) can be bridged.

Day & Night – Always Ready

Day and NightWhether in broad daylight or at night, security cameras have to be capableof working around the clock and ofdelivering high-resolution images, which is exactly what the M10-DNhas been designed to do. The day-night network camera is equippedwith two image sensors and twolenses, and automatically selects theideal mode based on the prevailinglighting conditions: either the colorsensor with the daylight lens or theblack-and-white sensor with theinfrared lens. Thanks to this dualsensor system, the camera producesgood true colors during the day, butis also extremely sensitive in darkenvironments.

In MoonlightThus, the MOBOTIX sensors allow

exposure times of up to four seconds so that true-color images are possible evenin moonlight. While such high exposure time tends to blur moving objects, it isunparalleled when it comes to recognizing static objects, such as parked cars andgraffiti.

Or With IR LightingWhen it really gets dark, the ten times more sensitive black-and-white sensors incombination with IR lighting, make it possible to produce incredibly sharp imageseven in the dead of night.
