What is Study Abroad with English?Study Abroad with English is a long-term course in which students start by studying academic English language and progress to study university undergraduate modules when the required English level is reached. The course can be customised according to different levels of English and specific academic interests.
Who should apply for Study Abroad with English? This programme is suitable for undergraduate students (and graduates, at some centres) who would like to spend time in the UK or USA developing their English language skills, with an opportunity to take academic modules, which may carry credits towards a degree in the home university.
When can I start Study Abroad with English? The programme has flexible start dates according to your level of proficiency in English and in relation to start dates of the undergraduate modules selected for Part 2:
Part 1 – Academic English Start dates at the beginning of each term.
Part 2 – Undergraduate modules A selection of start dates throughout the year, depending on your study destination.
Part 3 – Undergraduate modules 2 (University of South Florida only) A selection of start dates throughout the year.
For information on the start dates available at each Centre, see the relevant Centre spreads.
This programme provides the opportunity to experience university life while developing English language skills and sampling individual subject modules.
Why choose Study Abroad with English?• Develop the proficient language skills required
for international communication.
• Attain academic credits towards an undergraduate degree programme in your home country.
• Enhance career prospects through developing the confidence to handle the demands of a highly specialised academic environment, therefore adding value to your CV.
• Practical experience of university-style teaching and study methods, while making life-long local friends.
Key featuresPart 1 – Academic English
You will study a full-time intensive course of academic English language and study skills for a minimum of one term, for up to 20 hours per week, in order to reach the level required to study your selected undergraduate modules in Part 2.
The aim of Part 1 is to enable you to gain a level of English advanced enough to pursue the undergraduate modules in Part 2. As you progress to this level, either INTO or the University’s International Office will advise you of your choice of academic modules. If you do not reach the required level to enter Part 2, INTO will work with you to create an alternative study plan.
Part 2 – Undergraduate modules
You will study your academic modules at your chosen university alongside local and international students. Your module selection will depend on the subjects you have previously studied, your academic and English language levels, and the availability of places.
In order to be considered for credits, you must be available for the assessment period of these modules, which means you may need to allow for additional weeks’ accommodation for this period. During Part 2, you will continue to benefit from academic English classes to complement your academic modules (in most centres in the UK, students take full-time undergraduate modules while in the USA, they take part-time undergraduate modules and part-time Academic English).
Part 3 – Undergraduate modules 2 (University of South Florida only)
This part of the course is the same programme of study as Part 2 of the course, except with a higher minimum English language requirement. Please see page 25 for information.

MorningI start off my day with breakfast listening to BBC News. This helps with my English because I get used to hearing British English and I learn some new vocabulary from that as well. I have no class in the mornings except Wednesday so I revise for vocabulary tests or go to the supermarket for groceries. Then I usually cook lunch in the shared kitchen listening to music programmes on TV and have lunch with my classmate, which is a good time for us to revise for the mini test and get to know each other.
AfternoonI have two classes from 1pm to 5pm. They cover reading, writing, listening, and speaking. I have many opportunities to interact with my classmates, discussing questions and expressing my own opinion. My tutors are very friendly and the teaching materials are all useful to improve my English skills.
EveningAfter class, I make dinner and then do my homework at the Robinson Library – that makes me concentrate on searching for some resources for my project. I also like studying at the Students' Union as well because it’s really comfortable and just a two-minute walk from our accommodation.
Sometimes I go out to a movie at the Gate, and I joined the Anglo-Japanese Society and so I talk to my British tandem partner. A tandem partner is a language-exchange partner, and in my case, my British partner is teaching me English, and I teach her Japanese. It is nice to spend time in an English speaking environment and feel refreshed from studying.

MorningMy class starts at 11:30am. We focus on four different types of English such as reading, listening, writing and speaking. But one of the most important things that the teachers stress is 'how can we use this information in our real life in Britain’.
I've had a lot of opportunities to meet students who come from other countries. There are six different nationalities in my class. This kind of variety gives me opportunities to make my view and understanding much broader.
AfternoonI have one and a half hours between classes. Sometimes, I go to the Sportspark to use the gym. Normally I spend time practising my English skills in the Learning Resource Centre. I can also borrow a lot of useful books and DVDs in there. I enjoy watching DVDs and reading books in my free time.
Evening Fortunately I know of a football club (which is called Nostro Bulls FC) through an INTO staff member. So, every Monday night from 8pm to 9:30pm, I enjoy taking part in this club playing football with nice and friendly locals.
