CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY ABROAD TERMS ABROAD GUIDELINES FOR UCEAP COURSES

UCEAP courses may be applied toward…

    • Lower Division Major Prep UCEAP offers many summer STEM programs with coursework in physics, organic chemistry, and mathematics (to name a few examples). The summer physics programs in the UK and Ireland are popular options to complete the physics series in one summer (and they are pre-approved for credit). However, for lower division courses not pre-approved, students must petition to the UCLA Chemistry and Biochemistry Department (see “Petitioning & Pre-approval Process” below).

    • Major Core or Elective Courses

Generally, students can attempt to satisfy both major core and electives through UCEAP. Electives tend to offer more flexibility, so it may be easier to identify suitable UCEAP courses for these requirements.

    Petitioning & Pre-approval Process

Students interested in satisfying major requirements must petition this to the UCLA Chemistry and Biochemistry Department by presenting the most recent syllabus or detailed course description for pre-approval. Chemistry-Materials Science students may be required to petition through the UCLA College of Engineering pre-approval process.

    OTHER NOTES

    • Research/internships abroad Coursework associated with undergraduate research or an internship abroad is generally not accepted for major credit.

    • Non-major degree requirements Students are not restricted to taking courses only in their major abroad. You may also consider courses abroad to satisfy GE, minor, foreign language, & upper division unit requirements.

Study abroad is possible as early as summer after your first year, as late as summer after your last year, and anywhere in between. Start planning now to determine which term is best for you!
