This week was finals so many of the students were working on those individually so I had time to plan for this Thursday and Friday. I will start teaching bell to bell this week so I have been making sure to have all of my materials and lesson plans all set up in order to prepare for that. Week: 1 (Jan. 12-16, 2015)1. How did you spend your time this week? What responsibilities did you have?

This week was finals so many of the students were working on those individually so I had time to plan for this Thursday and Friday. I will start teaching bell to bell this week so I have been making sure to have all of my materials and lesson plans all set up in order to prepare for that.

Thursday and Friday I started the new unit with the students and were able to preview and use background knowledge before actually jumping into the material.

2. What were your most satisfying experiences? What were your most challenging experiences?

After my first block of teaching on Thursday, I had a student call me over to her desk and say that she likes the way that I teach and looks forward to me being the teaching the next few weeks. I was really worried about planning for an 80-minute block and making sure that I had enough going on during this time. Pacing was something that I did really well with because I was able to get to all of the activities throughout the lesson and only had a minute to spare.

The most challenging part is to sometimes get the students to do what they are supposed to be doing instead of talking with a peer. When this arose, I made sure to warn the students by saying that I would move them if they continued it. This seemed to stop the behavior from happening. On Friday, I did have a time that for one class I thought that I had enough materials and activities to do, but we ended up doing it quicker. When this happened I went over to my mentor teacher very calmly and just asked her for a suggestion. We were able to fill the rest of the time with something that went along with what the students had just learned. So I want to make sure to have extra activities available for when that does happen. 3. What are the plans for the upcoming week?

My plans for the upcoming week are to plan the whole lesson and collect the materials that are needed. I will also look at the exit slips and informal assessments that we did as a class in order to plan for the next time that we meet.
