No action at this time is recommended. However, if criteria continue to be unmet, the department will need to develop measures to strengthen student written communication skills. In the meantime, the following efforts to support written communication should be continued: (a) emphasize the importance of quality written communication, (b) provide constructive feedback on writing performance, and (c) encourage students to consult with the Writing Center. Reflections/Notes : The class size was small (i.e., five students), and two of the students were particularly weak in written communication. Assessment Method: Oral Communication Direct - Other

Details/Description: Oral communication skills were assessed of students enrolled in the required capstone course, RLS 45300 Seminar: Professional Development. In this course, students propose and deliver 45-minute presentations, as though they were delivering it at a professional conference. Students choose their own topics related to the profession of recreation and leisure studies.

During the spring semester 2016 the instructor for Seminar: Professional Development applied the attached rubric to seven student presentations to measure the competency of the students’ oral communication. Six variables related to oral communication were measured: Organization, Subject Knowledge, Graphics, Mechanics, Eye Contact, and Elocution. Each student was assessed at one of four levels of competency: Novice, Apprentice, Practitioner, or Expert. Performance Criteria: RLS Department faculty set the following two criteria for student competency in oral communication: (1) 100% of students must rate at the “Apprentice” level or above (2) 80% of students must rate at the “Practitioner” level or above Assessed During this Period (Y/N): Yes Program Assessment Contact Person: Linda Heyne Supporting Attachments:

Summary of Results: 5 A's, 14 B's, 2 C's Results: Performance Result: Met Actions to be taken: The department is exploring a better way to reflect student progress on this objective and will integrate that assessment method into the plan for 2016-17. The course that data was being collected from has students from outside the major and thus does not accurately reflect the progress of our majors.

In addition, this course is no longer offered and has been replaced by Recreation and Society which has an ICC designation. Which means there will be more non-majors in the class. It is therefore important to determine if there is an alternate means of assessing this SLO. Reflections/Notes : Difference in the scores from this year to last may be the result of changing the exam format from take home to in class.

Assessment Method: Time Diary Direct - Student Artifact

Details/Description: For one week, students complete a Time Diary. In a written analysis students “. . . should reflect on the meaning of your leisure activities.” Performance Criteria: 80 % of the student will achieve a grade of 80% or better on this assignment. In addition, this course is no longer being taught, and has been replaced with Leisure and Society (essentially the same course). Leisure and Society has a ICC designation so even more non-majors are included in the class. We will explore alternative ways of assessing this SLO in a majors based course for the 16-17 cycle. Reflections/Notes : Overall the assessment showed a high level of understanding and appreciation of the impacts of recreation on society and themselves.

Results for Service Learning I: Programing Agency Supervisor Evaluations

Summary of Results: Fall 2015 Midterm score averages indicate that the scores ranged from 2.5-4 on a 5 point scale. The score on the final evaluation maintained consistency or went up with a range of 3- 4 .

Spring 2016 Midterm score averages ranged from 3 - 4.5 on a five point scale. Final score averages ranged from 3.5-4.5. This indicates that students continued to demonstrate progress from the midterm to the final evaluations.

Note that a score of three indicates that the students meets professional standards See attached rubrics and data analysis charts for details. Results: Performance Result: Exceeded Actions to be taken: Curricular revisions passed and implemented n the fall of 2016 resulted in changes to the format and frequency of our service learning courses. These changes will be reflected in the 2016-17 assessment report. This decision was based on student feedback and curriculum mapping, which focused on the best use of faculty resources in enabling students to meet their SLO's.

In reviewing the scores submitted by agency supervisors, it is evident that there are a few instances where the criteria was listed as N/A. We are in the process of analyzing this information to determine if this is an issue of selection of appropriate agencies that can enable students to

37

meet their SLO's or if there is a need too address these objectives in our curriculum planning. Reflections/Notes : : During this review period we separated the assessment data based on the students majors. We felt like this would give a better idea of how students in each major were performing in this area. Student performance on this SLO is evaluated by agency supervisors. This provides us with the ability to see if the skills the students are learning in the classroom are transferred into setting in which they will be employed Substantiating Evidence:

Results for Service Learning II: Agency Evaluations

Summary of Results: Fall 2015 Mid-term evaluation scores ranged from 4 - 4.5 and final evaluation scores were all 4's. This is on a five point scale with 3 indicating professional competency (see attached data analysis and evaluation forms). Student's appeared to have either demonstrated less competency after midterm or the agency supervisors had higher expectation at the time of final evaluations.

Spring 2016

Mid-term grades ranged from 3-4 and final grades from 3.67 to 4.3 with 3 indicating professional competency (see attached data analysis and evaluation forms). Significant growth was demonstrated between the midterm and final periods. Results: Performance Result: Exceeded Actions to be taken: Curricular revisions approved in the fall of 2016 will call for the elimination of this course. Students in the OAL Major are engaged in the Immersion Semester Program that provides extensive hands on experience which faculty feel provides a more concentrated, applied experience than a 120 field experience. Reflections/Notes : Students seem well prepared to enter the field exceeding entry level standards in most cases. Increase in scores from Service Learning I to Service Learning II indicate that the students are learning more and are more capable of applying their skills as they move through the curriculum.

Note: These scores reflect the score of outdoor adventure leaders only. In the past we combined the score of all three majors. We feel that this approach will allow us to better assess the progress of students in each major.
